The Saints are going to be without cornerback Jabari Greer for most of the preseason.

Coach Joe Vitt said that Greer underwent a sports hernia procedure to repair a groin injury on Thursday. Greer suffered the injury on Tuesday and was held out of practice until then.

Vitt said that Greer is expected back at practice the week before the final preseason game against the Texans. That doesn’t leave him much time to shake off any rust before the start of the regular season, but Vitt said he isn’t worried about that.

“He will definitely be ready for the regular season. Some guys are quicker than others,” Vitt said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Greer started every game for the Saints last season and is expected to be one of their starting cornerbacks this season as well. He signed an extension worth $15.6 million over three years that kicks in after the end of the 2012 season.
