Kentwan Balmer goes missing from training camp again

Kentwan Balmer AP

The strange odyssey of Kentwan Balmer’s NFL career is continuing at Redskins training camp. Or wherever Balmer is right now, when he’s supposed to be at Redskins training camp.

Balmer showed up to camp when it opened last week, but he disappeared this week and has been gone for two straight days. The Redskins say his absence is unexcused and they don’t know where he is or why he isn’t with the rest of the team.

Hopefully it’s nothing very serious,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said.

A 2008 first-round draft pick of the 49ers, Balmer has undeniable talent for the defensive end position. But he’s never been able to get his head on straight and has therefore never lived up to his talent. When Balmer failed to show up to the 49ers’ training camp in 2010, he was traded to the Seahawks for a sixth-round draft pick. He lasted one year in Seattle before the Seahawks cut him, then got picked up by Carolina, where he lasted one week before the Panthers cut him. He finally ended up in Washington and played three games for the Redskins last season.

Now the Redskins don’t know where he is, and no one knows if he has any future in the NFL at all.

“Now the Redskins don’t know where he is, and no one knows if he has any future in the NFL at all.”

    SPOILER ALERT: He doesn’t.

Maybe he went to Chik-Fil-A and there is a long line!!!!!!!!

With what happened with O.J. Murdock, you have to hope someone, somewhere knows where he is.

The guy obviously doesn’t want to play professional football. Bad on him for making the decision to declare for the draft.

Rather than writing the guy off or getting rid of him, someone should do the classy thing and make sure he gets and takes the help he needs.

Fisher would already have the search party out for fear of suicide. Dude is at his boys house avoiding reality. Only real choice he’s making is a grape or vanilla dutch

I don’t want ungrateful people getting paid to wear my favorite team jersey brother.

and no one knows if he has any future in the NFL at all.

Given his history it sounds like he never really did in the first place.

Reason enough that Mike Nolan and Scot McCloughan should have been fired. Huge wasted pick in 2008.

He knows he’s not going to be on the roster in a couple more weeks anyway, so he’s off somewhere, I guess…just hope the kids ok whatever he’s doing

“Undeniable talent” at the defensive end position?
Three previous employers of his – and soon to be a fourth – would seem to disagree.

    Can’t-Wan’s been a bust from Day 1.
Being L-A-Z-Y might have something to do with it.
As Singletary once said, “If Kentwan wanted to be here he would be here.”

Demetrius Williams (Vikings) anyone? Balmer has the same M.O.

Is there NO explanation regarding this pattern of strange behavior over the years, ie: substance abuse, emotional, or social problems, mental health issues, etc? It seems rather strange that an otherwise healthy professional player would simply have frequent episodes of wanderlust. What’s the background Mr. F.?

As a Seahawks fan, I can recall Balmer being on the roster for 2010, but I can’t recall him ever doing anything. He was just kind of….there.

So, really, even when he was there…he was missing.

Who needs a well paying job these days, am I right?

  17. farmmbig says: Aug 2, 2012 3:51 PM

Meybe he’s with Dimitrius Underwood— I think Denny Green and the Vikings are still looking for him too?

  18. illiniftw says: Aug 2, 2012 3:59 PM

Even if you HATE playing football, where else will you find a job that pays anywhere even close to the minimum players make?? He’ll regret not playing or at least getting the paycheck in a few years

Something is clearly wrong with his head to just walk out of two camps. If you don’t want to play anymore, be a real man and just tell the coaches you don’t want to play anymore and “retire”. Going AWOL is the worst thing you can do.

  20. randallflagg52 says: Aug 2, 2012 4:04 PM

This shouldn’t be a surprise. I remember leading up to the 2008 draft many draftniks were questioning this guy’s resolve and mental stability.

  21. gmsalpha says: Aug 2, 2012 4:19 PM

It sounds bad. I was just reading on NFL.com back from when he was missing at 49ers camp and I read the following:

Balmer was razzed by teammates about being a first-round bust, but rather than use it as motivation, he buckled, the teammate said.

“It seemed like he had very low self esteem,” the teammate said. “It was like he just can’t take the joke.”

That sounds like a guy who is probably battling some demons, and no disrespect intended, but I don’t think he’s cut out for life the NFL, sadly. Also, he apparently was a “prominent” figure in the North Carolina academic fraud scandal.

I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think this will end well unless he gets some help for his mental and emotional issues, and quick!

  22. 303bengalguy says: Aug 2, 2012 4:19 PM

What if something actually happened to him? You guys would feel pretty crappy about some of these comments. No wait, most of you wouldn’t, you’re heartless d-train’s…

Hope he is tending to a family matter or simply just hangin’ out gettin’ high or something, but damn people… don’t rush to judgement.

  23. trollhammer20 says: Aug 2, 2012 4:19 PM

Imagine Underwood and Balmer on the same team.

    Dude, where’s my defensive line?

  24. smcgaels1997 says: Aug 2, 2012 4:21 PM

McClougan should be fired not only for drafting him, but then trading for him in Seattle..guess the rumors were true he was on the sauce

  25. EJ says: Aug 2, 2012 5:32 PM

Hopefully he is alright and not in trouble or hurt. It doesn’t make any sense to just miss training camp for no reason.

  26. peytonsneck18 says: Aug 2, 2012 5:46 PM

strangely, when the colts traded a pick to move up and draft tony ugho, the pick the 49ers recieves was used to draft balmer, and neither player ever lived up to expectactions, strange huh, and ugho just quit on the chiefs and now balmer just quit on the redskins,
