It's good and bad for best and the team. I completely understand the point of it being good for Best and the Lions if they are "exercising caution" just to have Best start the season in perfect health and with no other teams scheming for him or seeing the playbook that he is involved in. If Schwartz and Mayhew are just playing "sly fox", then great.

But it's also very much bad for Best, the Lions, and the fans because there has been a constant cloud of concern, speculation, and doubt over Best’s ability to maintain his health and have a productive career. I'm sorry but I look at him now and think every play could be his last. Unless this is just a way to "keep him fresh" for the real season, I have to question the intelligence of expecting him to perform like normal when he's cleared. I applaud the team for taking such a careful approach with the issue, but I just thing it's time for him to hang up the cleats.

IMO it's just not worth it. Why face the potential for constant headaches, memory loss, depression, or dimentia later on in life for just a few years of glory? If he was smart with his money like he should have been he should pay off his house, save a nice chunk for medical expenses, and move on with life.

Zack Follett may have ultimately become nothing more then a ST player and a backup LB, but at least he was smart enough to move on when he saw the risk and he had lingering symptoms.

Best has $4 million reasons to play the next two years. He will never make anything close to that the rest of his life. Of course he will try to play. You can't blame him for that. The thing is...when do the Lions, and the league decide enough is enough? I think given the risks, it will be soon.

malekmj says: Aug 2, 2012 3:18 PM

I want the kid back, but not at the risk of his long-term health.

The waiting, however, is bad for Jahvid, bad for the fans, and bad for the Lions. Someone needs to make a call here, and soon.
—————————————————————
thekiy,

Who are you? The waiting is GOOD for everyone. Its good for the Lions, good for the fans, and good for Javid. Why? Because it increases the chance he stays healthy and helps the Lions win games. Your impatience is a bit bizarre because it doesn’t make any sense at all.

===================

I think he means that if the F.O. wants to release him for his own good, or if he decides to retire early now should be the time so we can move forward. Kinda how Barry left us(no hard feelings btw, the organization never committed to Barry like he committed to them) with out a back late in the offseason.

But, with that being said, youre right. He will play. And his first contact should be week one. Not now or anytime in between. One very unlucky hit in camp would not be good.

This also cant be good for concussion lawsuit like 1buckeye76 says.(I shouldn't converse with buckeye and never will again.j/k, no seriously) And with Emmitt and many other players saying they lied to get on field, and that they were aware of concussions and damage occurred. At least help the vets out NFL. They don't have money like these kids.

The league is watching closely because there is a dilemma coming. If they do nothing and allow him to play (after doctors say he is physically able) then this can be used by the lawsuit gang to show that the league does not care about players. If Best plays and then gets another concussion that is debilitating he might add another case to the concussion docket. If they step in and prevent the kid from playing for his own safety due to the concussion knowledge that exists, they can/will be sued for an anti-trust/collusion type issue. No matter what the league does it will be viewed as wrong.

The league's smartest course of action might be to step in and prevent him from playing. That would invite a lawsuit but players would be arguing both sides of the concussion argument. Win the majority of lawsuits and settle the suit with Best.

It's a shame he is dealing with this issue. He has a ton of talent and if he is healthy and playing there is no doubt that the division is a legit 3-team race.

To all of those people asking him to retire.....how many of you are Bears fans? Ya I bet you are so concerned about his health. Not the fact that he embarrassed you on MNF and if healthy will continue to rip an aging defense to shreds.

EVERYONE of you in his situation would continue to play. Trust me. I kept playing and was only doing it for a college scholarship. And we all know what a degree is worth today.

This is one player I feel should retire, and walk away from the game now. We all know by know that the cumulative effects of concussions are not good, and this guy has had some bad ones already.

Jahvid- walk away now and enjoy the rest of your life. You won't regret it in twenty years.

Everyone is making a big deal out of this for nothing. Why in GOD's name would they EVER put him in preseason drills or games. They mean nothing. He is a speed back that is very intellegent for his position. My prediction is that he WON"T be ready for about another 4 weeks and then........be ready for week one or maybe pre-season week 4. If you were his coach you would do the same thing. If St. Louis doesn't know who to prepare for.......all the better. If Javid doesn't play week one than we all know his career is about over.
