He’s got the fourth most rushing yards of ALL TIME, behind only Emmit Smith, Walter Peyton and Barry Sanders, he made the Pro Bowl 5 times, he was All Pro 5 times, he rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first ten seasons, something only Barry Sanders had done, and he has more than 100 touchdowns, something only 16 players had done before him, he’s 7th all time in yards from scrimmage and he’s also the oldest player to win a rushing title. He was a class act, and he played incredible football.

What more do you want out of a player?

I was there recently on a project and I heard a story about Butler. Never played high school football but Fr. Silas Rooney (brother of Steelers founder Art Rooney) was A.D. at the time and with only 2,500 or so students they were having a hard time filling their sports rosters.

Fr. Silas noticed incoming student Butler walking through campus and could see his athleticism just the way he walked.

He encouraged Jack to go out for the team. Jack reported for practice and was turned away by the coach.

A few days later Fr. Silas again saw Butler and asked him how’d it go. Butler said the coach told him to take a hike.

You go back tomorrow, Fr. Silas said. He did. A little talk with the coach changed things.

Fr. Silas was no one to mess with.

He’s the 4th leading rusher of all time, the oldest RB ever to win the rushing title, and the only RB to gain 1000 yards in each of his first 10 seasons. Just because he didn’t have blinding speed doesn’t mean he wasn’t one of the premier RBs for a dozen years.

Induction into the HoF is about individual achievement even though being on a great team or in an effective system can add to individual stats/accolades. These guys are deserving and there are a ton of guys that have been “snubbed” (for lack of a better word) due to things that should not factor into the decision for induction but usually do.
