The Chargers have opted not to take advantage of the new blackout rule. As a result, there likely will be plenty of emails from the organization regarding the non-premium tickets that still need to be sold in order to lift a looming blackout.
The process already has started in the preseason, with the team sending out an alert that more than 3,000 tickets must be sold by Monday at 5:00 p.m. ET in order to lift the blackout for Thursday’s nationally-televised preseason game against the Packers.
With single-game tickets routinely available for regular-season games in San Diego, it’s not like fans who want to experience an NFL game in person have to spring for a glorified scrimmage.
Actually, the best way to get the game sold out could be to market directly to Packers fans, since they come to Southern California for games that count only once every eight years -- and because it’s virtually impossible to get a ticket to a game at Lambeau Field.
Then again, it would be pretty stupid to try to persuade fans of the visiting team to buy tickets to a game at San Diego.
