You do realize that Taylor was picked AFTER Gallery, so it’s not like the Redskins had a choice in the matter. Also no one in their right mind would ever mention Sean Taylor as being possibly the greatest safety ever. How about Ed Reed, Steve Atwater, Kenny Easley, John Lynch, or Brian Dawkins? All are/were better than Taylor could ever hope to be.
-------------------------------------------------------
wow, first off, that poster did NOT and i repeat NOT write that Taylor is possibly the greatest safety ever, he said, he could've been well on his way before his tragic murder and he would've likely been the Redskins version of Ed Reed, hard to compare him to Dawkins as Dawkins was more of a strong safety, Taylor was more of a free safety.

as for saying that the Redskins couldnt get Gallery, there were rumors of a trade up for Gallery and SOME people predicted that the Raiders would get......Fitzgerald or even Williams, there were many rumors and Gallery could've been a skin if the Raiders decided not to pick him.

as for Gallery himself, he will always be known by me as a better version of Manderich as he was a better guard than tackle, but wasnt as hyped and didnt get busted for steroids, Gallery was just not a great tackle.

Other than Ed Reed, Rodney Harrison was better than all of the other guys you listed.

Ed Reed is the best safety EVER. Ronnie Lott is # 2. Loved watching Atwater (Hello, Mr Okoye!). John Lynch was a little overrated IMO. He was good, but Harrison was better and Lawyer Milloy (Patriot years) was just as good (Look at the numbers. I did.) in that era.

Oh, and good luck, Mr Gallery, in your future endeavors.

He wasn't a bust, he was just overdrafted and played in the wrong position. It was a known fact that his arms were too short to play LT in NFL. Any merely competent team would have projected him to guard and adjusted his draft value. Don't blame Gallery for the Raiders mistakes. If would have taken an ultra quick lineman to compensate for that lack of measurables at the LT position.

I remember there being serious discussion of taking Gallery number 1.

Considering how rarely he made contact with the charging defensive player in front of him, maybe the best next move for Gallery would to become a matador.

add to previous

The Chargers and Giants took QBs so that leaves ...

1) The Raiders had Rich Gannon in his 17th year and Kerry Collins in his 11th year and they took Gallery.

2) The Cardinals had Shaun King and Josh McCown and they took Larry Fitgerald.

Just incredible luck and circumstance that Roethlisberger fell to the Steelers at 11.

As a Raider fan, I remember draft day 2004 as being a coup for the Raiders. Outland Trophy winner Robert Gallery in the 1st rd, Rimington Award winner Jake Grove in the 2nd. It was as if he drafted Art Shell & Jim Otto!
Sadly, neither panned out. They were supposed to be the cornerstone of the anticipated Raider resurgence.

It's easy to criticize. Anyone can do that. Especially in anonymous fashion. I'm guilty of it myself at times.

But at least Gallery went out and balled. He competed. He tried against the best in the world. Unlike Jamarcus, he made the effort.

I am not a Raider fan, but you have to respect a man for laying it on the line ... even if he fails.

Acquaint oneself with Theodore Roosevelt's "The Man in The Arena." It is on point, and speaks volumes in this context (and many others).

In a lot of ways, Gallery represented the slide downwards for the Raiders. As it happened, the 2003 team was viewed as an anomaly due to horrific injuries (Gannon's shoulder, Tui's ACL, etc) and Callahan just absolutely losing it in the locker room.

Norv, Al, and everyone else in the league wanted Gallery. Larry Fitzgerald went third, but supposedly Al was more interested in Sean Taylor as an alternative pick. Rumors at the time were that the Raiders and Skins came very close to a trade in spots where the Raiders most certainly would've drafted Taylor.

We never know what would've happened from there.

We do know however, that Gallery's inability to play LT epitomized our offensive line in the Shell year, which was the worst offensive line in team history. This led to us going 2-14 and drafting Jamarcus, which set up the team we have today.

He was a college stud, throwing Defensive Tackles, Defensive Ends and Linebackers around like rag dolls. I remember when he was in the draft, he was so over-hyped, every scout was talking him up, saying he was going to be a sure shot pro-bowler, one of the biggest guarantees to come out of college in a long while. He was drafted and turned out to be a bum Tackle. When he switched over to Guard, he looked comfortable, but he still wasn't great, he was average at best. I hope the Raiders allow him to sign for a day so that he can retire where he started. It was weird seeing him in anything other than a Raiders uniform.

hulkhogansays says:Aug 4, 2012 6:10 PM

Time sure does fly. I was at FedEx Field on Draft Day 2004 for a draft day party and a bunch of Redskins fans wanted him to supplant a decling Jon Jansen. I’d say we made the right call with Sean Taylor though brother. Nobody can tell me Sean wasn’t on his way to supplanting Ronnie Lott as greatest safety ever before he was unfairly murdered.

==================================

You redskin fans and your revisionist history...

You do realize that Taylor was picked AFTER Gallery, so it's not like the Redskins had a choice in the matter. Also no one in their right mind would ever mention Sean Taylor as being possibly the greatest safety ever. How about Ed Reed, Steve Atwater, Kenny Easley, John Lynch, or Brian Dawkins? All are/were better than Taylor could ever hope to be.
