Assuming that quarterback Kevin Kolb’s rib contusion doesn’t derail the competition for the starting job in Arizona before it really begins, John Skelton has taken the lead during his performance on Sunday night in Canton.

Subbing for Kolb, who left with an injury after completing one of four passes for four yards and an interception, Skelton completed four of six throws for 32 yards. He also led the Cardinals on a 14-play, 90-yard scoring drive.

Helping Skelton’s cause is that he threw the ball to receiver Larry Fitzgerald, something Kolb didn’t do.

Though neither guy should force it to Fitzgerald, the quarterback who finds a way to get the ball into Fitzgerald’s hands necessarily will have a better shot at winning the job.
