Bears bring back Rashied Davis

The Bears lost a wide receiver who made most of his impact on special teams when Devin Thomas decided he didn’t want to play football anymore and they are filling his roster spot with a former member of the team with a similar profile.

The Bears announced Monday that they have signed wide receiver Rashied Davis to a one-year deal. Davis joined the Bears as a free agent in 2005 after a few years in the Arena League and wound up sticking around for six years. He saw his most extensive action as an offensive player in 2008 when he started 12 games and caught 35 passes, but his most memorable catch came a couple of years before when he caught a 30-yard pass in overtime to set up the winning field goal in a divisional playoff win over the Seahawks.

After 2008, Davis played almost exclusively on special teams. He signed with the Lions before last season and played a similar role in 11 games for them. We’d say the same role, except Davis also saw some time at cornerback when injuries ravaged the Lions secondary.

That wouldn’t seem to be a likely spot for him in Chicago, but a little versatility never hurt a guy trying to make a football team.
