Blackmon deal close

AP

The last unsigned draft pick soon could be signing his contract.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jaguars and receiver Justin Blackmon are close on an agreement.

The source says that the deal “should get done soon.”

Blackmon, the fifth overall pick in the draft, had yet to agree, presumably because of efforts by the team to protect itself in the event Blackmon gets in trouble off the field, again.

Last month, Blackmon pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI charges, following an arrest that resulted in a measured blood-alcohol concentration of 0.24 percent.

  1. It’s an embarrassment and an indictment on the Jacksonville organization to not get this done by now. You would think the Jags would have some sort of leverage due to Blackmons baggage. I guess we shall wait and see. However, this doesn’t surprise me in the least.

  2. The Jaguars are beyond silly being concerned about this kids guaranteed money. Reality check!!! Two years ago you would have had to sign him for twice as much. The new CBA protects you. This teams only concern should be how many games they’re going to loose. lol

  3. John Oehser of jaguars.com and Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union and jacksonville.com are both reporting that the deal is done and he’ll sign tomorrow. Blackmon was allegedly seen on a flight into town just before the weekend.

  4. Wouldnt it be a good idea if draft picks were automatically slotted to receive a certain contract? It would probably decrease the likelihood of holdouts.

I don’t think this was about the size of the contract. Likely more about the guaranteed money/signing bonus. After the DUI, the team wanted some assurances they wouldn’t be on the hook for a big pike of dough if he screws up again. That language was probably the issue. Jacksonville is $25 million under the cap, so they have the jack. They just don’t want to pile it up and have a big bonfire with it.

  6. bennyb82… yeah, it’s a great idea (btw, it’s practially what the new CBA is) except when you get a draft choice blowing three times the legal limit between draft day and signing. In that rare instance, all bets are off and it’s perfectly fair for the team to protect itself beyond the norm.

  7. I got a feeling there’s gonna be A LOT of protection clauses in that contract that will protect Jax in case Blackmon does something stupid again.

  8. Must be nice to get popped for a DUI then haggle over a multi million dollar contract. He is living the dream
