Howie Long would have passed on Tebow

The Boomer & Carton show on WFAN continues to generate Tebow-related news.  Earlier this week, co-host Boomer Esiason said the Jets should cut Tim Tebow.  Earlier today, Hall of Famer Howie Long, of the NFL on FOX, said on the program that the Jets shouldn’t have traded for Tebow.

I wouldn’t have brought him in,” Long said.  “When Tim Tebow comes, he comes with great distraction.  I’m not a fan of the HBO series.  I think it’s entertaining, but I think it gives the outside world access and distracts your football team.  Tim Tebow has that kind of impact on a football team. . . .

“The round-the-clock, 24-hour-a-day coverage that the Jets are getting on every throw . . . every down and distance, red zone, that Tebow takes snaps from the punt team, I think it distracts from your football team and your focus.  And it’s a good Jets football team that could contend for a Super Bowl.”

The only good development that could come from all the attention is that, if the Jets get to the Super Bowl, they’ll be unfazed by all the attention.  But if the attention before the season starts makes it harder to get to the Super Bowl, it won’t matter.

IF I WERE A JETS FAN i would be quite upset that this guy was taking up a roster spot.

  2. tlmoon2112 says: Aug 8, 2012 11:33 AM

So by your own logic then Howie, you wouldnt have brought Manning in either right? Because all weve heard during the offseason is Manning this, Tebow that…..and please note Manning hasnt even taken a hit yet. Just be man enough to admit that you dont like the kid and move on.

  3. sterilizecromartie says: Aug 8, 2012 11:36 AM

People are acting like Tebow is nothing more than a distraction. He is a lot more than that. He is arguably the best playmaker they have on offense. Besides Tebow, who do they have that can make plays?? Shonn Greene?? Lol. Sanchez? Lol. Holmes is OK if he could keep his act together. And that’s a big IF.

Like it or not, the Jets only chance of do anything on offense is with the ground and pound behind that good O-line. Luckily they have the best ground and pound QB in the game. And they better use him.

  4. nyjets1017 says: Aug 8, 2012 11:38 AM

That’s what Woody wanted so its working

  5. joetoronto says: Aug 8, 2012 11:42 AM

He’s absolutely right, it’s a massively obvious mistake.

  6. Ryan says: Aug 8, 2012 11:44 AM

Does Howie seriously think the Jets could contend for a Super Bowl? The dysfunction in that locker room is still rather obvious and Tebow will only make all of that worse. Good luck to the Jets, but I see them finishing in the bottom of the division this year.

  7. Vegas Guy says: Aug 8, 2012 11:45 AM

Knowing Rex Ryan (not personally but from what I’ve seen over the years) all this is going to do is make him keep Tebow to prove he can be useful.

  8. niners816 says: Aug 8, 2012 11:46 AM

I would pass on Howies flat top he still rocks.

  9. chi01town says: Aug 8, 2012 11:52 AM

    All TEBOW do is WIN!!!!!
Why do these OLD HAS BEEN players keep trying to Tear down Tebow?? Most of us ( the fans ) like Him because hes a WINNER an he is the BEST thing that happen to Football in a long time. So Howie & boomer can go some where an wash the grey out of there hair an leave TEBOW alone

  10. bucrightoff says: Aug 8, 2012 11:55 AM

Credit to Howie for not just bashing Tebow without merit like Esiason or Hoge. His take is well reasoned and well thought out, not some seemingly personal attack. Then again unlike those two losers Howie’s in the HOF.

  11. cleverbob says: Aug 8, 2012 11:59 AM

Can’t believe I actually have to write this, but here goes:

The difference between Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow is that Manning is a starting QB with first ballot HOF credentials.

  12. rdrs68 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:03 PM

Seems like Howie got some knickers twisted with his comments. When will the knicker wearers realize that most of the experts feel the same way about this failed experiment?

  13. favre4presidentofdelboccavistaphase3 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:07 PM

Can’t wait for the Week 4 Tebow chants after Sanchez wets the bed.

Nothing better than seeing another Jets season go down in flames due to front office incompetence.

    Lost me right there.

No Mark Sanchez led football team will ever see a super bowl.

  16. piratefreedom says: Aug 8, 2012 12:15 PM

As A Pats fan I wish the Jets had passed on him.
He’s a dangerous play maker if you aren’t dependent on him throwing the ball.
Plus I like to cheer for him and that’s impossible while he’s a Jet.

  17. savior72 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:16 PM

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a million times. The Media just build this guy up so they can tear him down. He’s really not a good quarterback. If the Jets do make it to the Superbowl, it won’t be because Tebow got them there. He’s a running quarterback and they never pan out.

  18. rajbais says: Aug 8, 2012 12:16 PM

Howie, you are a smart man!!!!

That Villanova education is finally paying off!!!

  19. socalskinsfan says: Aug 8, 2012 12:17 PM

It’s a little disingenuous for Long to heap the media spectal on Tebow. While he may add to it, the Jets aren’t exactly a small-market team. There is a media circus surrounding the Jets EVERY year, and has been going back to the days of Broadway Joe. If any of the Jets are distracted, they shouldn’t play for NYC. Ask for trade to Jacksonville.

  20. autumnwind999 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:18 PM

Love Howie but I’m not sure how he sees the Jets as a Super Bowl team.

    - Below average starting QB
    - Below average RBs
    - Average WR corps
    - Many poor draft choices in recent years
    - Aging defense that’s really not what it was a couple of years ago with a healthy Kris Jenkins and some semblance of a pass rush, even if it was mostly manufactured via Rex’s blitz packages. Bart Scott was a shadow of his former, Ravens self last year. Plus now Jim Leonard is gone and while he’s an OK, not spectacular player, he was the QB of that unit. Rex is still an elite defensive coach, but the talent looks to be far from that.

    Here’s what the Jets have:
    - A pretty good o-line. Excellent at some spots but with potentially a very weak link or two.
    - A good pass catching TE.
    - Elite CB unit (mainly because of Revis).

Unless Sanchez miraculously develops into the QB the Jets thought they were getting when they traded up to draft him, I see this as a 6-10 team.

Just my opinion. And you know Rex is going to take the hit for it, though he’s probably one of the better things that org has going for it, in terms of talent. The reality is that Tannenbaum has whiffed more often than not of late and the roster is in need of some serious rebuilding.

  21. sterilizecromartie says: Aug 8, 2012 12:19 PM

    @bucrightoff

There is no logic to anything Howie is saying. The Jets went to back-to-back AFC Championships when they had all kinds of distractions, including the year when they had Hard Knocks. They actually seem to thrive when the distractions are at their peak.

  22. jimmysee says: Aug 8, 2012 12:20 PM

Tebow, like T.O., OchoCinco, and Brett in the later stages of his career, carries huge baggage.

You got to understand what you’re getting when you sign them, and then you’re all-in for the entire package.

  23. chazzmon says: Aug 8, 2012 12:21 PM

The Jets brought in Tebow to run every crazy play they can think of, not be the starting QB. Unless Sanchez regresses again heshould be the starter. That being said having only one WR that’s proved anything is going to make it difficult for any QB.

  24. 1historian says: Aug 8, 2012 12:21 PM

Tebow is not a pro quality QB. He is a good person and is always nice to others, but he is NOT a pro quality QB.

Tebow doesn’t bring the distraction – it’s the idiot press that creates it, and the level of idiocy in the New York sporting ‘press’ is the highest recorded in western civilization.

    Yearafteryearafteryearafteryearafteryear

  25. riggz91 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:23 PM

So not only are we going to have daily posts about Tebow’s practices. Now we are going to have posts about a NY radio station talking about Tebow. The FAN talks about players on NY teams because they are a NY station.

  26. dikhurtz says: Aug 8, 2012 12:25 PM

All this sniper fire that Tebow gets from media pundits and former players is absolutely pathetic. The media created him now they want to tear him down. ONLY because he is a christian. I hope that when he gets a chance to play he just lights it up, and all of these so called know it all’s will be eating crow.

  27. nyyjetsknicks says: Aug 8, 2012 12:25 PM

If Tebow wasn’t religious, he would have a much smaller following. Plenty of other first round qbs who had successful college careers, get drafted in the first round, and end up not doing anything in the NFL.

46% completion rate is not good enough to play in the NFL.

  28. jetsarestacked says: Aug 8, 2012 12:29 PM

before tebow the jets got a lot coverage. with tebow in the mix it just has become ridiculous. and when i say ridiculous i mean all the nonsense stories that get written and blown up every day about the jets. like the tebow running shirtless, training camp fights between a back up running back and 6th string safety etc.

  31. sj39 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:33 PM

I would start Tebow over Sanchez and watch him take them to the playoffs.

  32. scandinaviansausage1974 says: Aug 8, 2012 12:33 PM

Can’t believe I actually have to say this, but here goes:

Tebow went as far or FARTHER than 28 starting QB’s last year including the likes of Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, Big Ben, Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub, Jay Cutler, Phillip Rivers….the list goes on & on.

Yes, I am aware that P. Manning, Schaub, & Cutler were injured. That’s part of Tebow’s ability—he took the punishment of the RB style of player he is so widely panned for being, on the way to beating a better playoff team & NOT getting injured.

Haters can bash him all they want, but that guy just wins. I wish my team could boast that kind of toughness, talent, & leadership from our “personal punt protector”.
If it leads to wins, who cares? Why bash it?

Go ahead & ask Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, or even Boomer Esiason if they wouldn’t rather have Super Bowl rings instead of pretty stats & passing titles.

    I’ll wait.

  33. bullybirds says: Aug 8, 2012 12:35 PM

Tebow as a person is probably a good guy.

That being said, he is the reason I have slowed watching and reading NFL news.

  34. seanowns says: Aug 8, 2012 12:36 PM

To say Tebow has no value is misinformed. He is the Anti-Romo in a way.

Romo puts up great stats and looks like a prototypical passer, but, alas, he always bungles the close one.

Tebow puts up truly awful numbers, but the guy finds a way to win.

I am not sure if you want Tebow as your full-time QB, but there is clearly value in that. Plus, Football is a business and Tebow is clearly the IPhone of the NFL from a profit perspective.

  35. t8ertot says: Aug 8, 2012 12:36 PM

    —————————————–

Peyton Manning is the better QB than Tebow for sure. However, Tebow was actually the better fit for Denver to win. This is the part that people just are not getting. Denver was a 1-4 football team before Tebow came in and the coaching staff decided to go all in with the read option. Without Tebow and the read option Denver would have finished 3-13 last year.

This is not a team flush with talent at almost every position group. It’s really a team with a lot of holes, and Manning (even if healthy) can’t cover them all up. Take a look at the roster, please. There are no good D-tackles, the D line overall is weak (especially against the run), the O-line is below average, and the running backs are either used up (McGahee) or just not good.

I’ll give credit to Elway for being a really good salesman, because other than that I have no idea why Manning would go to Denver. He’s going to regret that decision when he could have gone to a team like SF that is just in need of a really good QB to put it over the top.

Manning is no longer elite. He still may be pretty good, but that’s not good enough to turn a below average Denver roster in a play-off team or especially a Super Bowl contender.

  37. skoobyfl says: Aug 8, 2012 12:50 PM

Superbowl ?? On paper, they look to be in 3rd place in AFC East, at best.

  38. exhelodrvr says: Aug 8, 2012 12:58 PM

The consistent problem is that may people equate someone’s value as a QB with their skill as a passer, and that is a mistake.

Can Tebow improve enough as a passer so that his strengths in the running/leadership area are worth more than his limitations as a passer? I think there is a strong likelihood of that occurring, given his work ethic, if he gets the opportunity. I don’t know if he’ll get that opportunity, though, because most teams and coaches are pretty conservative, and unwilling to go “against the book.”

  39. andymannfl says: Aug 8, 2012 12:59 PM

I like Howie but he lost all credibility when he put the Jets in the same sentence as the words ‘SuperBowl Contender’ They might be the worst team in their own division.

  40. gmsalpha says: Aug 8, 2012 1:05 PM

I just want the Jets to acquire Dwayne Bowe so I can hear “Tebow to Bowe” all the time.

Either that, or at least the Jets can visit the Chiefs so I can hear “Tebow in Arrowhead”.

Or maybe he’ll just change his name from Tim to Bo and be Bo Tebow.

  41. leeeroooyjeeenkiiins says: Aug 8, 2012 1:05 PM

What Boomer Esiason said is completely ridiculous, but I do agree with Long. Tebow has a place in this league somewhere, but it certainly shouldn’t be on a team that’s already a traveling circus to begin with. At least not while that teams wants to still be taken seriously, which at this point is virtually impossible to do.

  42. dolfan66r says: Aug 8, 2012 1:12 PM

Tebow is not a starter but could be the Mariano Rivera of the NFL. Bring him in to close or for a comeback.

  43. tedmurph says: Aug 8, 2012 1:23 PM

Howie, if I were the Rams, I wouldn’t have wasted ridiculous $ extending your son. 37 tackles. Good, not great player.

  44. billhicks666 says: Aug 8, 2012 1:32 PM

“And it’s a good Jets football team that could contend for a Super Bowl.”

I think that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard Howie Long say.

  45. chalkruz1989 says: Aug 8, 2012 1:36 PM

I cannot fathom to hear the negative criticism that surrounds Tim Tebow anymore. I would understand labeling him as a distraction if: he was constantly making outlanding statements to the media, getting arrested, or just simply being a bad apple. However, you can’t blame Tebow for the media running to him, he’s not giving them juicy quotes or talking badly upon anyone. Blame the media and outlets such as ESPN for repeating the same topics over and over. Tebow is trying to live out a life-long dream of being the starting quarterback, don’t knock him for something we would all trade places with him to do.

  46. randomguy9999 says: Aug 8, 2012 1:39 PM

    Tebow was never any good….

there was all the non football based hype, but reality is he was dead last in completions, yards, sack yards, TD’s… he squeaked 5 games by having a D that kept him close and sidearming something at the last second. That doesn’t last.

and the Jets blew $4M and whatever else to take over his contract? then came out that he’s gonna PUNT protect?

that’s a lot to pay to just get media ink…..

and if this is Sanchez’s year to get hurt for real….. the Jets are really…. really gonna pay……

  47. electionconfidential says: Aug 8, 2012 1:56 PM

The Jets are a perfect team for him. They are already so riddled with distractions that he couldn’t possibly make things worse.

Tebow isn’t causing the free for alls, hold-outs or blithering by the coaching staff…

  48. dexterismyhero says: Aug 8, 2012 2:09 PM

Skip Bayless would have hit on Tim Tebow!!!!

  49. richc111 says: Aug 8, 2012 2:20 PM

The more this goes on the more I route for Tebow. He does virtually nothing to bring this on himself and to watch him handle it the way he does is great. there are lesson in it for most NFL players. You know instead of kneeling and praying when he scores he needs to start flapping his arms or dancing like some jerk with the premise that “he is entertaining us”. Then maybe he would fit in.

  50. gloryfromheaven says: Aug 8, 2012 2:45 PM

It’s not like Tebow brought a 4-12 Broncos team that started the year at 1-4 to the 2nd round of the playoffs…

  51. broncobeta says: Aug 8, 2012 2:47 PM

    Yeah Howie, he’s a distraction.

Tebow’s prevalence in the media is due to the media’s obsession.

Howie’s prevalence in the media is due to the fact that he voluntarily does stupid car commercials.

  52. jaypace says: Aug 8, 2012 3:17 PM

Are football players so mentally weak that they can’t practice with cameras around. It’s only a distraction if you let it become one. So all these talking heads are really pointing out the mental ineptitude of today’s football player.

  53. xpensivewinos says: Aug 8, 2012 3:24 PM

    Two questions:

1). Did Tim Tebow lead the Broncos to the Playoffs last year?

2). Did Tim Tebow and the Broncos beat the Steelers in the Playoffs last year?

    End of story.

  54. insanelomein2 says: Aug 8, 2012 3:45 PM

    @electionconfidential:

Tebow may not be the cause of the problems in the Jets organization but he is the reason why these problems are brought to the forefront.

If Tebow was on any other team, the Jets practice fights would be a mere blip on the media radar (teams have training camp fights all the time some encouraged by coaching staff).

  55. mommatocharlie says: Aug 8, 2012 3:46 PM

    Let the games begin.
