Brandon Carr: I’m not as good as Revis yet, but I’m working to be

Brandon Carr, Dez Bryant AP

Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr has been proclaimed by Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as this year’s best free agent signing, but Carr has a bigger goal than that for himself: He wants to be the best player in the NFL at his position.

Carr believes the Jets’ Darrelle Revis is the best in the league right now, but Carr’s hard work is all about surpassing Revis as the best cornerback in the NFL.

My next goal is to become the best cornerback in the NFL, point blank. And get some Super Bowls on the way,” Carr told CBS-DFW. “It’s Revis Island right now, so he has the throne, but that’s why I’m out here working every day, grinding and working.”

In four NFL seasons, Carr has already gone from a little-known fifth-round draft pick out of Grand Valley State to a cornerback worthy of a $50 million contract. It’s good news for the Cowboys that he isn’t satisfied with that, and won’t be satisfied until he’s the best.

Slightly above average girls look good when they are the only girls at the bar. Describes Carr in free agency.

He is NEVER be as good as Revis

  3. whodeyinpa says: Aug 9, 2012 2:57 PM

Nothing wrong with that claim. Is carr as good as Revis now? Hell no. Will he ever be? Probably not. But you can’t knock a guy for taking a shot and busting his ass to get there.

Ask Megatron about Carr. Carr shut him down to the point that Detroit moved Megatron to Flowers side of the field, where he promptly beat Flowers for a TD.

He’s a good corner but will never as good as Revis, Darrelle Revis might be go down as the best cover corner in the history of the NFL, definitely a good signing by the Cowboys, I love guys that aren’t satisfied after signing a big deal. The Cowboys defense will be very good this year, they have a talented defensive secondary and the best pass rusher in football, I’m not sure why this team is being slept on, they’re my pick for the NFC East.

  6. FinFan68 says: Aug 9, 2012 3:03 PM

All he has to do is tug on the jerseya little to slow/steer the WR and hope it doesn’t get called. Has worked for Revis who is very talented but gets more non-calls than any DB i have ever seen

  7. dbones750 says: Aug 9, 2012 3:11 PM

I’m a Giants fan, but the more I read about this guy, the more I like him. 14 games a year at least…

  8. alldayvikingfan says: Aug 9, 2012 3:12 PM

Why is everyone such haters?? Don’t aspire to do anything…just hate. That’s why you only have the keyboard to blast your crappy takes! What is your name and why do you not make headlines?? Exactly.

  9. unfkwthabl says: Aug 9, 2012 3:14 PM

He wasn’t even the best CB on the Chiefs roster…. he needs to get to flowers level before he thinks about revis.

  10. namaths5thofwhiskey says: Aug 9, 2012 3:15 PM

Yeah, I don’t think you have to tell us that. We know.

I was going to try to formulate a counter-argument here but it turns out I am just a chiefs fan that is upset Carr is gone. That said, he is a solid player… just not a shut down corner.

  13. blueballzny says: Aug 9, 2012 3:27 PM

Give me a break. The only way he will be better than Revis is if Revis retires. Maybe ge should set his sights on something that is actually achievable, like being the best corner in the NFL named Brandon.

  14. novusanimus says: Aug 9, 2012 3:29 PM

Carr is not as good as Revis but he is working on it. Manning is not the best ever but he could be. The regular season cannot get here soon enough.

  15. trollaikman8 says: Aug 9, 2012 3:36 PM

Revis has top flight speed and doesn’t give anything up in terms of being physical.
Carr for now is an above average, very physical corner who probably can’t run with 4.3 guys.

  16. philgrek says: Aug 9, 2012 3:38 PM

The only problem I have with Revis is his lack of no-calls. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard announcers simply describe him as “aggressive” or “physical”. “Thats just Revis being aggressive.” “He’s one of the most physical CBs in the game”. When other corners are “physical” its called Defensive PI. There shouldn’t be a double standard for him bc of his reputation.

As for the negative comments about Carr… he has steadily improved each season (great sign), last season he ranked 7th in DBs with a 61.7 QB Rating against him. I wish I could find the specific stat I’m looking for, but towards the end of the season (crunch time) last year QBs had an absolute 0.0 QB Rating when throwing against him. He covered any WRs who lined up on his SIDE of the field (as the KC Dbs don’t shadow one WR, but play sides) and had solid success against some of the best WRs in the game. He obviously had a terrific attitude. Not sure what theres not to like about this guy

  17. steelers4385 says: Aug 9, 2012 3:40 PM

I dont know what moron is talking about Carr shutting down megatron because its not possible. Mabye Calvin had a bad game? But could he do it again? No. Carr couldnt shut down Calvin on his best day. And Carr is not that sick either. Solid as crap though and a very good pick up by the cowboys.

  18. sumoson says: Aug 9, 2012 3:41 PM

You can hate the Jets but Revis is hands down the best corner in the league and by carr giving him his props i will now root for this kid

  19. Tarkus says: Aug 9, 2012 3:50 PM

He’s not even as good as Brandon Flowers, as evident by Flowers being the #1 CB in KC and covering most #1 WRs.

The national media barely even knew Carr existed before the Cowboys signed him, as evident by the fact that he’s never sniffed the Pro Bowl.

Funny how putting a star on the side of your helmet somehow makes you elite.

  20. dtlb58 says: Aug 9, 2012 3:51 PM

Carr was the BEST CB on the Chiefs roster last season. Especially to start the year. Flowers was getting torched right and left for TD’s. I know I painfully watched every one.
People need to actually watch the games instead of just going by names and so called reputation. Flowers is a good CB but he is small. Big WR can and do have their way with him. Watch some game film. Carr is long and lanky. Covers like a blanket and knocks the ball away.
Chiefs could have afforded Carr and Bowe right off the bat they should have locked them both up!

  21. billymc75 says: Aug 9, 2012 4:05 PM

Revis isn’t Deion the best CB can’t exist anymore in this no touch league they’re developing.

  22. gooboy6 says: Aug 9, 2012 4:08 PM

I watched every one of Carr’s games the last 4 years. He is a smart, tough player, leader, always has his head in the game, Captain type guy.

He will NEVER be as good as Revis, doesn’t have the quickness nor the flat out speed, but as a Chiefs fan, I wish we still had him.

  23. bigdawg24 says: Aug 9, 2012 4:25 PM

Funny, when you are with the Chiefs, you get no press.

When you are go to the Cowboys, you are now considered one of the best corners in the game.

I like the way he’s complimentary towards Revis. But the order of which he states his goals is very telling,
He wants to be the best cornerback first and by the way win NFL titles.

Far better to be winning NFL titles even if you are not so great!
I know I know, Cowboys need him to be great to win. However, if he had to ride the pine for them to win it all, he should be willing.

  25. peytonsneck18 says: Aug 9, 2012 4:35 PM

So do folks on here think Revis is better than prime time deion sanders?????

  26. haleyistheman00 says: Aug 9, 2012 4:39 PM

He should probably work on being better than Flowers!

  29. jcg23 says: Aug 9, 2012 5:07 PM

I love the attitude that the Cowboys are moving toward. Players that want to make themselves better as well as the team. That get along with everyone and are mentors to the up and comers. Another year or two of drafting like they’ve been doing and bringing in Free Agents when available to fill the holes and they should be a force to reckon with.

They’ll struggle this year, thanks to the Safety and Interior line issues, but they are headed in the right direction.

  31. jomochiefsfan84 says: Aug 9, 2012 5:27 PM

I’ve watched this guy since he was a rookie very good shut down corner but seen him get beat a lot! He is nowhere worth the $ Dallas signed him to & he has hands of stone seen him drop a lot of easy INT’S as a chief. Good luck to you Brandon Carr but you will never be as good as Revis.

  32. bigbluecrew420 says: Aug 9, 2012 5:30 PM

    JPP went to Dallas???

  33. kcflake says: Aug 9, 2012 5:31 PM

Here in KC, we were sad to see Brandon Carr go. We will be rooting him on when he is not playing our Chiefs. The sad truth is he was not worth a $50 million dollar contract. Brandon Flowers is a better cornerback that Brandon Carr is Today. I do hope to see B. Carr shut down some NFC receivers and do well. Good Luck Brandon Carr. Go Chiefs in 2012!

  34. worldchampsbaby says: Aug 9, 2012 5:33 PM

Revis Island is prime real estate. The only real estate Carr can claim is a used Carr lot.

  35. jredshoes says: Aug 9, 2012 5:36 PM

He is better than Terrance Newman however

  36. ahostiletakeover says: Aug 9, 2012 5:46 PM

Darrelle Revis > Nnamdi Asomugha > Champ Bailey > Charles Woodson > Jonathan Joseph > Lardarius Webb > Joe Haden > Brandon Flowers > Brent Grimes > Devin McCourty……

Hmm, yeah not seeing Carr in my top 10 and I am a pretty objective football fan, even have my boy Webb as 6th best entering this season despite ProFootballFocus having graded his 2011 season as second only to Mr. Revis.

The Cowboys do have some good potential in that secondary with Carr, Jenkins, Scandrick, and Sensabaugh but for whatever reason they’ve not put it together as a unit. The Ryan brothers have always been a little overrated IMO anyway, and Rex was my team’s d-coordinator for several years.

  37. thraiderskin says: Aug 9, 2012 5:47 PM

That is a respectable attitude… those on a lower level of the hill should always look to take the top.

  38. starfan79 says: Aug 9, 2012 5:48 PM

Just heard on the radio today that the cowboys are tackling in practice.. It’s the first time since Parcells..

  39. randallflagg52 says: Aug 9, 2012 5:52 PM

Based off last season Revis was not the best corner in the NFL. Lardarius Webb obviously outplayed every single CB last season, and yet didn’t even get a pro bowl selection. Maybe if Webb was a loud mouth punk like Revis the average NFL fan would realize how great of a season he had last year.

there are not very many 4.3 guys he will have to cover and his physicality makes up for that most 4.3 guys are smaller receivers he will dominate on the line of scrimmage

  41. marylandcowboy says: Aug 9, 2012 6:24 PM

To all you Revis fans, Carr is not as good as Revis, thats a fact he admitted to. However for those saying Revis is best corner in history,, I have two words for you; Deion Sanders! If Deion was still in his prime Revis would be left sitting in the dust and then Deion would go play receiver on the offense!

  47. jrgaf says: Aug 9, 2012 7:12 PM

Revis is great. No argument. BUT, cmon , better than Deion ? Not a chance. Just for giggles, dez bryant destroyed revis in that week 1 game. But, either dez or romo bailed him out by throwing the ball right to him at the end. If i had to choose i think id take rod woodson in his pit days over revis as well. Oh! Like the other poster wrote, champ Bailey. Nuff said !!

Umm, no. The Chiefs had Flowers assigned to Calvin Johnson all day, because he was their best cornerback. And when the Chiefs had an option to make a big contract offer to Flowers or Carr, they made it to Flowers, because he was their best cornerback. Cowgirls fans need to realize that they signed another team’s #2 CB to a 50 Million dollar contract. And now that you have Carr, it will still take 3 of your DB’s to try and cover CJ—-unsuccessfully.

It”s nice to know that someone’s buying into Blob Ryans B.S. The only problem now is that Brandon’s expectations of himself are delusional.

The closest you’ll ever play at Revis’s level is if you crash in a NASA super sonic jet and they put you back together with metal legs and arms, Get it!!!

  51. gpete1962 says: Aug 10, 2012 11:05 AM

To settle the Revis,Deon question once and for all. Deon was a better athlete but not a complete corner. Nobody was better than Deon against the Pass but he shy ed away from way to many tackles to be a complete corner back. That’s where Revis edge’s him out.

Plus Deon played with less restrictions than Revis does in terms of penalties. But I will say it again, Deon was a more versatile player and better athlete. Hands down!!

  52. footballfan80 says: Aug 10, 2012 12:59 PM

    marylandcowboy:

Sorry man, but your thinking doesn’t work when a teammate of Deion, Michael Irvin himself, explicity stated that Deion is nowhere near the cover corner that Revis is. Simply because he was not exclusively lined up on the other team’s #1 receiver all the time, but being mixed and matched on the #1 and #2. No corner in the history of the game has been asked to do what Revis has done. That is line up on the other team’s #1 no matter where he is and just remove him from the game completely.

  53. footballfan80 says: Aug 10, 2012 1:01 PM

    jrgaf :

Watch the game tape maybe? Revis gave up 1 catch that game, to Dez Bryant on a 20+ yard completion on a sideline route. Honestly, though Revis giving up 1 catch for 25 yards is a bad game for him. But not exactly getting destroyed.

  54. footballfan80 says: Aug 10, 2012 1:02 PM

    randallflagg52:

Really. Its nice to know webb graded better than every corner last year in your own rankings, which dont happen to be reality. If you are referring to pro football focus, they had revis as #1 the last 3 years running.
