This isn’t an issue of interstate commerce nor an issue of a power that is “necessary and proper” for the functioning of the Federal government. So, by what power granted to it by the States does the Federal government think it has the authority to determine in which States sports gambling is allowed?

Puh-lease… They would have to wait 20 years for another Super Bowl & how much money could be made from gamblers in 20 years? it’s a no contest… take the gambling.

I laugh at the notion a law that says “If you didn’t start gambling in 1994″ you are out of luck. You think that’s gonna hold up when there is a lot of money to be made? Capitalism always wins.

Before we go dismissing Christie’s opinion on legal matters lets remember where he came from. Christie was arguably this countries most prolific federal prosecutor and as NJ’s US Attorney he racked up a record of 134 convictions to a big fat zero acquittals. Maybe this guy knows what he’s talking about and it isn’t all about brash confidence.

By the way, if Christie wins and the Supreme Court strikes down the anti-gambling law, the NFL will have to have the Super Bowl in Salt Lake City every year because Utah will be the only state in the union that doesn’t immediately legalize sports gambling.

I’ve never understood why sports betting is illegal outside of Las Vegas to begin with. Then again, our government wastes a fortune keeping marijuana and prostitution illegal, so it’s not surprising.

I agree with you trseann. I would go so far as to return the super bowl to the NFL Championship Game model, i.e., play the game in the city with the best record (last year’s game would have been in Foxboro).

I really am interested in the decision not to build a Cowboy stadium style venue. If Dallas can have such a great stadium, surely NY/NJ can have as good if not better. C’mom the city of Dallas or the NY metro area? No contest.

Atlantic City casinos are in big trouble financially. Sports betting will give the city and state a shot in the arm and help thousands of employees there keep their jobs. I know an elitist like Mara or Goodell dosent care about these people but at least Gov Christie is trying to help out. Sports betting in Las Vegas and the NFL have been getting along just fine for decades. Theres no problem here .

As a resident of South Jersey and a die hard Eagles fan, this is music to my ears. One more reason to like the Christie. Takes Rutgers out of South Jersey. Merge with Rowan. Take on the teachers union. Beau-Ti-Ful. Love this guy.

You completely miss Christie’s point. Points, actually.

First off- when he refers to illegal gambling the point he is making is that when you make something illegal, you CREATE a black market of illegal activity. You say he should enforce the laws. There are no STATE laws against gambling, thus there is no need for state enforcement. If the FEDERAL government wants to get serious about enforcing THEIR laws, they should.

Christie is trying to deal with the problem of illegal gambling the only sensible way there is- by legalizing it.

And I’m sure if you know this or not, but Federal Appeals Courts do not have the final say on the Constitutionality of a Law. So to act as if this is a decided issue is not accurate.

Lastly, the “no more Super Bowls” argument is hysterically funny. The state will make far more money on sports betting than they would if the Super Bowl was in New Jersey every year.

New Jersey has the right to do as they wish PER THE 10th AMENDMENT! We are these united States. The federal government is supposed to be a UN type entity to the sovereign states of this country. Each state is essentially its own country. Stop looking to the Feds fat boy and legalize sports gambling.

My own personal preference as a NJ resident… if given the choice, i would rather be able to walk into a venue and place a 10 dollar bet on a team and have a little more fun watching a game than have a super bowl in NJ that i won’t be able to afford to go to anyway.

Losers like this guy have no business owning an NFL team. He’s not his dad, nor will he ever be. The fact that the NFL rewarded both him AND Woody Johnson for being a bunch of cheap losers is utterly ridiculous. They easily could’ve put a dome or retractable roof on the stadium, especially since they were splitting the cost, but they chose the cheaper option and didn’t add one to that piece of tin that they got ripped off on. Hopefully there’s a blizzard that day and the game is played in front of 500 people

You don’t think the house gets in on it? Look at the pay leagues at CBS. They take between a third and a half off the top.

Am I missing the point on this issue? Is the argument that if the game is played in a state where sports betting is legal that somehow the game can be fixed? That players\officials will be payed to throw\fix the game? Or is it something else?
Gamblers\bookmakers will only try to fix a game if it is played in the same state that they operate in? Is that really the NFL’s argument?

I’m sure Christie is only speaking on behalf of someone else who will make a ton of money off of sports bettors. If he actually believed it was the state’s rights and believed government shouldn’t dictate people’s moral rights then he would have the exact same view about the marijuana laws. Funny, but he has the exact opposite views on that subject. Hmmmm, wonder why?

the whole weather excuse is nonsense. it was like 60 degrees out in ny/nj some days this past february. besides, like 99.9% of all football fans wont be attending that game. why the heck do you care if it’s cold out or snows? it’s not like the game would be delayed or cancelled.

Look at the cities that normally get the Super Bowl and those that likely will.

Miami
Tampa Bay
New Orleans
Dallas
Indianapolis
Arizona
San Francisco (New stadium)
LA (WHEN they get a team)

IF NJ is included in that list, then odds are, AT BEST they would get a Super Bowl every 9th year.

Now, add to that the weather leads to the chance of them never getting another Super Bowl anyway.

Now, look at the revenue of what the gambling would bring. Which is better for the city?

My guess, and I have no horse in this race (pun intended) is that NJ would make a LOT more money on taxes and such with the gambling.
