The Nick Foles era begins

Getty Images

The contract Mike Vick signed in 2011 operates, as a practical matter, as a two-year deal with with a year-to-year team option on the remainder.  And if Vick doesn’t have a big year in 2012, the Eagles could have an intriguing option come 2013.

Rookie Nick Foles has looked great so far in his debut with the Eagles, completing six of eight passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

The first one went for 70 yards, after Foles stepped up in the pocket, rolled to his right, and threw back across his body to Demaris Johnson, who was wide open.

The second was caught by Mardy Gilyard, a 44-yarder hauled in near the goal line.  The call on the field accurately was overturned by the replacement officials, giving Foles his second touchdown pass in the third quarter.

I bet Arizona will give the Eagles two 1st rounders for him.

That’s great and all but let’s remember that it was aganist 2nd and 3rd string guys instead of starters.

    Bear down

  4. phillipalpha says: Aug 9, 2012 9:54 PM

this kid got a crazy arm – hope he takes the backup spot so he can get some playing time while Vick is out for a few games again this season – way more intriguing than Kafka.

  5. cjay12 says: Aug 9, 2012 9:54 PM

Liked Foles a lot at UA… Throws a good ball, just very immobile.

  6. hulkhogansays says: Aug 9, 2012 9:56 PM

AKA Welcome to mediocrity, Philadelphia. Just where your football team belongs brother.

Don’t believe the hype. The Cardinals are still paying for it.

  11. richndc says: Aug 9, 2012 10:00 PM

Ms. Vicky might be hanging up that skirt sooner than she planned.

  12. whodeyinpa says: Aug 9, 2012 10:00 PM

Arizona says they’ll only give him a modest 6yr 80 million dollar deal, and not a penny more!!

  13. rgb2425 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:01 PM

Yea he’s looked impressive with a big arm, but c’mon, he’s playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers in which many of whom won’t make the Steelers’ roster. Wouldn’t anoint him the next starter just yet MF.

  14. thegreatestofalltimes says: Aug 9, 2012 10:03 PM

Foles looks much better than I’d hoped. I know it’s only preseason, but I feel a teensy-weensy-eensy better about the QB position.

  15. andyreidisarrogantandfat says: Aug 9, 2012 10:03 PM

eagles third team > pittsburgh’s third team

I know you want to pull a silver lining out of this game mikey but i remember the same excitement about kafka after his first preseason game. and he blows.

  16. attyken says: Aug 9, 2012 10:04 PM

Maybe the Eagles can trade him to Arizona for a bounty. I hear they need a new QB!!!

  17. berniemadoffsides says: Aug 9, 2012 10:07 PM

    Trade him to Arizona!

  18. thekiy says: Aug 9, 2012 10:08 PM

Let’s not read too much into a preseason game against a 2nd string defense…

  19. moneymike23 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:10 PM

Cardinals are licking their chops right now.

  20. enochmh2 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:13 PM

I suppose we are all guilty of it,its only preseason-against back ups and guys who’ll be cut. But good show by foles i guess

Breaking News: Nick Foles signs a 5 years $70 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

  22. somekat says: Aug 9, 2012 10:14 PM

Definitely should be the #2. Kafka can’t throw the ball more than 5 yards down field with any accuracy. He hardly tries, even in the 2 minute drill. You cant’ win in the NFL when a defense only has to cover the line, and 7 yards off of it.

They should cut Kafka, andl let the kid and Edwards fight over the #2 spot

  23. huskylawyer says: Aug 9, 2012 10:17 PM

The third string QB comes in against the scrubs in the first pre-seasons game and his “era” begins? Ummm….ok lol. That’s like saying, “The Caleb Hanie Era Begins”

  24. lilrob10201 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:17 PM

Nick Foles has potential to be a good QB in this league. He has the size and arm strength.

  25. finfan87 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:17 PM

An Eagles backup QB looking good in their system? This is unheard of. Clearly he is the next Tom Brady.

  26. exeaglefan says: Aug 9, 2012 10:17 PM

Dont let the door hit you on your way out Vick.

  27. eigglesnosuperbowls says: Aug 9, 2012 10:19 PM

    No era began !

  28. dalucks says: Aug 9, 2012 10:20 PM

I guess it would be easy for the backup quarterback to look good against some other backups and mostly third stringers. Is he the next A.J. Feely or Kevin Kolb?

  29. funktron2x says: Aug 9, 2012 10:24 PM

U of A!!!! Go Nick! 🙂 Just like my Lions, had to wait 30 years on this planet for my Cats to field a legit stud at QB. I hope like hell Foles has a long and productive career. He has the talent to do it, and he’s tough as nails.

  34. southridge23 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:40 PM

I’m not an eagles fan but if I’m a nobody and/or washed up qb, there’s gotta be no better place to play than Philly…aj feeley, Jeff Garcia, mcnabb, kolb, Vick, I’m sure I’m missing a few more.

  35. davekezer says: Aug 9, 2012 10:43 PM

Reid’s “Create Next Kolb” project is going along swimmingly.

  36. jaredo10 says: Aug 9, 2012 10:45 PM

sorry kafka you just got traded to arizona for a 1st round pick and darnell dockett

  37. attyken says: Aug 9, 2012 10:58 PM

    Screw RG3….we have Foles.

  38. chrisdacommish says: Aug 9, 2012 11:00 PM

Oops, thought I was still reading the RGIII story….moving on

  39. andyreidisarrogantandfat says: Aug 9, 2012 11:03 PM

Florio and his eagles love should be ashamed of this headly after 1 good quarter against 3rd stringers. get some credibility mike.

  40. scubasteve12 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:06 PM

not a cardinals fan. but all the trade him to arizona for 1st rounders and someone is really sad. sad because thats all eagles fans have to brag about.

  41. randomcommenter says: Aug 9, 2012 11:12 PM

the first TD was a blown coverage. Anybody could have made that play.

The second was a good throw but against the scrubs.

Mike Vick was in midseason form. First guy not open, pull down the ball and run. There are 12 year olds playing Madden who read defenses better.

  44. attyken says: Aug 9, 2012 11:19 PM

  45. vincentbojackson says: Aug 9, 2012 11:21 PM

Foles is a guaranteed lock for the hall of fame as long as he faces the opposition’s 3rd string defense his entire career.

  46. photoshootfresh says: Aug 9, 2012 11:23 PM

🙂 I see Dan Marino all over this kid just a bit more mobile. Look at those passes. Yes it was against the 2nd and 3rd string but the Eagles had their 2nd and 3rd string. This was his first game ever in the NFL. Dont give me the “he is slow” argument. I forgot, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, Kurt Warner and Troy Aikman all ran 4.4 40’s. Give the kid a chance. He is the first Eagles QB in a long time that lets his WR’s make plays and throw the ball to the spots as opposed to the reciever. Doing a fantasy draft tomorrow. I plan on taking my man in the last round as a keeper and reeping the benefits of a Matt Stafford year in 2013. Nice pick Andy and Howie. Love it. Draft best available and not on need. HooRAHH!

  47. gloryfromheaven says: Aug 9, 2012 11:28 PM

Only Mike Florio would put “The Nick Foles Era Begins” … Dude, he’s playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers? Plus there are always no body’s who play great preseason games but have absolutely no success during the actual season…

  48. croghan1919 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:30 PM

    Nick Foles era begins?
All this tells me is that the Eagles don’t have to worry that their #2 might be a Curtis Painter in waiting.

  50. brintfatre says: Aug 9, 2012 11:34 PM

Vick has a lot of quit in him… he thought he’d found his way out of the season. Looks like he may have to play a few more weeks…

  51. chitown26 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:38 PM

“…and threw back across his body to Demaris Johnson, who was wide open.”

It was hardly across his body. Seriously, take a look at the play.

  52. eaglesfan290 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:44 PM

Why don’t we just trade Kafka for a 2nd round pick and Daryl Washington?

    seems fair lol

  53. jhig713 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:44 PM

That’s great and all but let’s remember that it was aganist 2nd and 3rd string guys instead of starters.

And he had to work with a 2nd and 3rd string supporting cast. He could of went 2/10 with no TDS. He performed like he should have playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Way to be negative.

  54. phx1311 says: Aug 9, 2012 11:45 PM

damn is it really like that with the cards jokes…..we do need a qb so i guess i can’t be mad when its the truth

The fact that Demaris Johnson and the incomparable Marty Gilyard caught those TDs tells you all you need to know about who was on the field with him.

  62. geniusfan says: Aug 10, 2012 1:38 AM

I like Nick Foles’s potential and he definitely has the physical tools to develop into a good QB but conclusions can never be drawn from preseason games that goes for starters and backups we just can’t read anything into it until the real games start.

  67. haterswelcomed says: Aug 10, 2012 6:07 AM

Why is everyone saying ” Yea but it was against 2nd and 3nd stringers” … Yea cause he isnt a rookie or anything…? Im not gonna sit and say hes the future after 1 pre-season game, but he had a good game yes.
I dont know why Eagles fans are against Kafka. I like him and think he should have been the #2 last year. He came in the heat of the moment against Atlanta last year and played solid. If Maclin doesnt drop a 4th & 1, he would have had a chance to win the game. Im not say HE is the future either, but I apparently like him more than others.

  68. elmaxoh says: Aug 10, 2012 6:08 AM

I don’t want to trade him … he seems to be a nice backup QB … better than Kafka …

  69. phillyrick22 says: Aug 10, 2012 7:09 AM

The preseason truly does reveal who has “it” and who doesn’t even if it’s against 3rd stringers. Everybody forgot that this is how Victor Cruz started against 3rd stringers ..

  70. kleppnasty says: Aug 10, 2012 7:16 AM

Nate Davis looked like a stud in the preseason and he got cut by the Niners. It is a good sign for Foles that he played well, but doesn’t even mean he’ll be good in a real game, let alone great. And to the guy who said he looks like Dan Marino, just stop, you’re an idiot.

  71. chalkruz1989 says: Aug 10, 2012 7:45 AM

It was a smart move by the Eagles to draft Nick Foles given that Michael Vick seems to get hurt getting out of bed every morning. Then again Kevin Kolb has looked like a real dandy…

  72. cash804 says: Aug 10, 2012 8:51 AM

Calm down Beagles fans…you’ll get an opportunity to see NF9 in action after the Redskins put Vick on a stretcher…AGAIN!!!

Comparisons of Nick Foles to RGIII just make you look ridiculous. While NF9 was airing it out against 3rd stringers, RGIII was dancing in the end zone…against Buffalo’s starting defense.

  73. phillipalpha says: Aug 10, 2012 8:55 AM

i dont care about Foles’ statline, he just had impressive mobility/arm strength, his pass was on target – woop!

I just hope he gets the 2nd team reps next, so we can see how far this kid can take it.

  74. cleverbob says: Aug 10, 2012 9:13 AM

No point in getting all hyped up over this guy yet, or Edwards for that matter. This was just about a half step up from playing in the Senior Bowl or some other college all star game.

  75. EJ says: Aug 10, 2012 9:24 AM

Foles looked pretty good out there, he hasn’t changed much since playing college ball. He has always had a good arm with decent accuracy and limited mobility. A couple of years in Philly working with one of the best QB coaches will set this kid up good for a shot starting somewhere in the NFL. The thing I like best about NF is his confidence, he seems real calm out there.

  76. oldbyrd says: Aug 10, 2012 9:26 AM

I don’t care what stringers were playing, this kid has a future. Did I mention his arm strength?

  77. ziggy26 says: Aug 10, 2012 9:42 AM

Actually, the second throw was a perfect pass against tight coverage by Curtis Brown, a player the Steelers expect to be a starting caliber corner sometime in the next couple years.

Foles impressed me (not that it means anything)

  78. lbcoach34 says: Aug 10, 2012 9:48 AM

yep. 2nd half of the first preseason game…that’s a good body of work to evaluate him

  79. liamj55 says: Aug 10, 2012 10:17 AM

Cowboys suck, Giants suck, Redskins suck.

WOW talking about a QB in philly and some fool needs to be reminded of the cold hard truth

Giants 4 Time Super Bowl Champions and Current defending champions

Cowboy’s who do suck but still have won 5 Super Bowl’s

Redskins again they suck but still have won 3 Super Bowl’s
So if those teams with a total of 12 Trophies suck what does that say about the only team in the east with zero Super Bowl wins?

With more then 25% of all Super Bowl’s won by NFC East team’s it must really suck not to have any.

    Keep the dream alive philly

  81. therealbleedcoltsblue says: Aug 10, 2012 2:07 PM

First Doug Williams, then Matt Schaub, and Kevin Kolb, now Nick Foles.

If there’s one thing the Vick detractors can all agree on, it’s that his back up is ALWAYS the best QB in football…
