Brandon Weeden turns ball over twice in debut

Brandon Weeden AP

Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden’s first night as an NFL player was a mixed bag.

He completed his first pass of the game to Mohamed Massaquoi and hooked up with Travis Benjamin on a nicely thrown deep ball later on the first drive, but two turnovers sullied the night. The first was a fumble forced by Lions defensive end Willie Young after he beat tackle Mitchell Schwartz badly on a rush from the outside. Schwartz also had a false start in a rough debut performance.

Weeden was later picked by Bill Bentley on a pass for wide receiver Greg Little that Weeden either threw outside him or missed because Little didn’t keep running his route. Overall, Weeden was 3-of-9 for 62 yards in his three series of work and, perhaps most importantly, he didn’t get hurt. Not everyone was so lucky. Massaquoi left the game with a head injury and will not return. Massaquoi has a history of head injuries so it could be some time before he’s back on the field.

Colt McCoy has taken over for the Browns at quarterback.

He didn’t fumble, the refs just blew the call.

Even with the picks, he throws a nice deep ball.

Massaquoi left the game with a head injury, after the FIRST PLAY of the FIRST PRESEASON GAME.

All due respect, do this guy a favor and cut him. He can’t play in the NFL. Too many concussions.

Massaquoi, these head injuries are getting a little scary with him, I wish the guy luck

It he were Peyton Manning, he’d be looking terrific.

Cut both of them. Sign Brian Sipe.

Agreed, mo think long term. Love ya but think of your future after football. Hate to see you with long term affects from too many shots to the head.

Ryan Mathews thinks Mohamed Massaquoi is made of glass.

  9. jackblackshairyback says: Aug 10, 2012 9:30 PM

The fumble wasn’t his fault, the int was. He looked like a rookie.

I don’t even feel bad for Browns fans anymore. They know in their heary of hearts that they won’t recover from Holmgren’s mammoth blunder of not trading for RGIII. RGIII could have finally brought real championship hope to the factory of sadness…but nope, then Brown fans put up a front and say Weeden is leading them to prominence…please, he’s more of the same, below average talent that will have you wondering in 3-4 years why you are back to rebuilding. Nowhere’sville.

    Derek Anderson part deux!

  12. rickrock6661982 says: Aug 10, 2012 9:47 PM

They would have been better off trading for Tebow

    And yes…I’m dead serious

What a terrible call on that weeden fumble. He clearly goes back, starts the motion, gets hit on the arm, arm still goes completely forward and the ball is in a tight spiral to the ground. Fumble. Joke. Then the lions clearly fumble and the refs miss it. Its preseason so no worries but damn 2 terrible calls vs browns there…

Bill Bentley is a rookie cornerback who should have had another interception, but it bounced off his chest. I dare say that he will be an upgrade to Wright.

    3 facts:
    1-Richardson is already a bust
2-Weeden is never going to be above average
3-Seneca Wallace is your best quarterback

Weeden did not take his geritol before the game

Colt looked really good tonight, and had a rating of 110.0 :) Compare that to Weeden’s rating of 19. Ya, 19. If Shurmur was smart, McCoy would be the Browns starting QB.

Great idea to give Chris Weinke 2.0 the starting job with no competition. I’m sure that’s going to work out well…….

Weeden is not he first QB to struggle in a pre-season game this year, and let’s wait for a couple of seasons before you decide that the Browns should have given up four first round picks for one guy. Go Browns!

    +1!

Pereira commented that Weeden’s hand was moving forward with the ball secured and should have been overturned as an incomplete pass.

God help us all if these quacks will be officiating when the season starts!

Browns fans would never tolerate that. They’ve decided that Colt sucks and Weenden’s the next Roger Staubach. It’s how the Factory of Suck rolls.

Yeah, I’m sure you would. Not a Pitt fan, but teams like that gun for titles. Teams like yours gun for 1 and 5 in your division. Pitt, Balt. and Cincy will beat your team like a drum this year.

As for the original post, Wallace sucks and McCoy is the best QB–by far. Trent Richardson isn’t a bust. Weeden is definitely average at best.

Browns 4 and 12 (if they get lucky). Sorry Cleveland…at least you have the Cavs…. Oh, sorry. Well, you have the Indians—oh, yeah….

    Well, sorry!

I hope this team is cursed after the way they flat out lied to Colt about the draft. No class.

  27. timmyandtammyscumbag says: Aug 11, 2012 1:05 PM

…and the exhalted Matthew Stafford was 4/7 with an INT and zero points *with the benefit of having a Calvin Johnson*, but let’s not mention that :)

I really don’t think Weeden looked that bad for his rookie introduction. He threw the ball pretty well. Yes, he made mistakes. But, what rookie doesn’y?
Even the Detroit announcer made the comment that Weeden looked good….looked anything but a rookie.
He has to do better at looking away the defensive guys but I think that will come with knowing beter and better where the receivers are expected to be.
I’m encouraged. I hope he plays more this week.
