Kaepernick explodes for 78-yard touchdown run

AP

With plenty of pressure on Alex Smith in 2012, there’s a chance that we’ll eventually see the man who was picked one spot after Andy Dalton in the 2011 draft.  (Yeah, we know that coach Jim Harbaugh swears Alex Smith is the team’s quarterback.  Harbaugh also swears he didn’t pursue Peyton Manning.)

Colin Kaerpernick, who has secured second-string duties so far over Josh Johnson, wisely kept the ball on a read option from shotgun formation and exploded through the hole created by the defensive end and darted 78 yards to the end zone against the Vikings.

San Fran leads, 14-6.

There was talk that Johnson could supplant Kaepernick as the backup to Smith in 2012.  After plays like that one, it’ll be hard for Johnson to overcome Kaepernick.

It also could be hard for Smith to keep Kaepernick on the bench.

  1. The Niners aren’t that good football team but they might as well start this kid brother. Having Alex Smith around, is like having Rex Grossman around…waste of time, money and roster spot.

49ers aren’t that good a football team? Find me anyone that doesn’t have them as a top 5 team in the NFL right now. Must not be a big football guy hulk because that statement was just retarded and Alex Smith is fine, I mean did u catch the Saints-9ers playoff game last year? Only won the ESPY award for game of the year and Alex Smith won that game.

  3. hey brother, how about u get yr own identity, cause yr not the hulkster, so stop bottle feeding and get out yr moms basement, brother!!!

I agree brother. Anyone that beats the Foreskins by only 8 points is a mediocre team……

    brother.

  5. Alex Smith won an ESPY?

Man…that’s right up there with the Jersey Shore winning a Teen Choice award

  6. I really love how everyone who writes a story about the 49ers on PFT hesitate to give them credit. Last year every story would say how they won but bash Alex Smith and it will not last. The one thing that no one seemed to get is that they kept winning. Now it is a new season and you ranked them in the top 5 but write stories with statements like “if they do not win at a clip like last year Harbaugh will become unglued.” And, with play like this it will be tough for Smith to hold of Kaepernick.

Florio, I have always loved this blog and usually it is factual and not slanted in any way. But geez, stop with the anti 49er crap. Yeah Harbaugh has made some idiotic comments; but show me a coach who has not. He is one coach who you know without a shadow of a doubt he has his players’ back.

And Alex Smith may not be glamorous or a “stud” QB but he and his team (in either order) won games and were within an eyelash of the Super Bowl. You may not think he is the long term answer, which you and all of your writers make so abundantly clear, but the 49ers are actually relevant and with Harbaugh they now have some stability, especially in offensive coordinators.
Funny how for other qb, the fact that they have a different oc each year for 3 or 4 years in a row is a relevant reason for them to not reach potential. But for Smith, it does not seem to matter when you write a story.
I am not trying to anoint him as the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady but if leading your team (along with a tough D) to a NFC Championship game is a true gauge then that was not a bad year.
And when you say they won in spite of him, the offense may have been simplified but there will still many opportunities for Alex to give the other team the ball and not have as much success. Why don’t you be a little more objective like your buddy Dan Patrick. It would be refreshing. Beating some stories like this (and others) to death gets old.

  7. Its pre season, Colin was also playing against guys that won’t even be in the NFL in a month.
I know people think it’s racist when RUSH the idiot said black QBs don’t win but it’s true.
It’s 2012 people, it’s ok to be honest and face reality.
No team with a black QB is going to win a super bowl, they are novelty acts, fun to watch might win a few games maybe even a playoff game but when the smoke clears there is always going to be a white QB holding the Lomabari trophy. I’m a black man and I know this is true, lets see would you rather have VICK or BRADY?
Same goes as RBs, White people get all exited when theirs a white RB but they are not going to be good past a year, see Hillis

  8. Don’t be mad at me for pointing out just how big of a fluke the London 49ers are brother. Garbage at all positions except LB. You wish you had a QB like RGIII brother!!!

  9. I’m not sure what a QB running through a wide open hole does to to make it harder for another QB to jump over him. I would think the guy who was better at the QB stuff than the RB stuff would have the upper hand in a QB battle.

  10. @blackfootkiller yeah that must be why Frank Gore’s top 4 rushing games in his career all came against Seattle huh? 7-o again buddy

  11. It’s rediculous. No matter what would have happened in this gamed, the idiots will still point out what was wrong with it. Including the person who wrote this article.

At any rate, it’s preseason so who really cares?

  12. The 49ers only have good LBers! Really?! Yeah Justin smith totally sucks, but you’ve probably never heard of him. Vernon davis, frank gore, Aldon smith, and Goldson. Hulkster, lay off the roids.

  13. When u only throw 17 TDs in a season & make the playoffs it’s ur D that did most of the work. Rodgers was 6 TDs shy of throwing 3X as many as Smith.

Don’t be mad because Niners had more wins than your skins the last two years combined. And now since you no longer have r1 picks the next two years, good luck upgrading your roster. Im pretty sure you still need a whole secondary, DLine, OLine, WRs and RBs. Watch your team give the Rams two top 10 picks the next two years. Have fun getting manhandled by the Gmen, Eagles and Cowboys.

The 49ers are one of the last teams in the NFL that could move, I think they are pretty safe where they are.
By the way Hulk, my little brother thought you were the greatest thing since sliced cheese when we were growing up…
I’m sure if he read some of your latest comments, he would probably wish that The Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man or Andre The Giant would come back and smack you around a bit. It was funny the first couple of times, but if you want people to take your comments seriously, you might wanna chill on the Hulk Hogan thing, Brother. Its getting a little old man, we are not 10yrs old anymore.

  16. Your defense looked very good as expected. If you think kapernick wouldn’t outperform smith over the course of a season then the qb situation is not looking very good for the organization. The kid needs reps and Alex has had enough time to become something ( unsuccessfully)

  17. Smith is fine, and will manage many 8 minute drives this year like he did last night. Long drives with our defense leads to a lot of wins.

But, Scott Tolzien should be our #2 QB, dude is a good pocket passer. Everytime I watch him he performs, Kap has talent but he’s not ready to be an NFL qb.
