Panthers DE Keiser trying to sprout a career with Chia seeds

It’s not easy staying hydrated in Spartanburg, S.C., a sweltering steambath of a place.

But Panthers defensive end Thomas Keiser is going green at training camp trying to keep himself going.

Keiser told the team’s official website he’s drinking a mixture of water and Chia seeds to fend off the heat.

Yes, the same Chia seeds as the popular Pets of the same name.

“People ask me all the time if it’s the same stuff that’s in Chia Pets. It is,” Keiser said. “I’ll have probably two or three tablespoons in somewhere between two-thirds and a full gallon of water every day.”

Keiser, who was second on the team with 4.0 sacks last year after being promoted from the practice squad, carries a gallon jug of water with the seeds floating it around with him. Teammates rag him about it, but he says it’s worth it.

“It helps hydrate you, because it absorbs 10 times its weight in water,” Keiser said. “And instead of the water just going in your system and flushing right out, it’s going to sit in you longer.

“Most of the guys think I’m pretty weird for carrying that around. I just keep telling them it’s like Mike’s Magic Juice in ‘Space Jam’.”

When I first read this, I thought Keiser was having fun with somebody, like Packers tight end D.J. Williams cow-wrestling routine.

But this seems legit from a nutritional standpoint. If nothing else, it could make for a more interesting mugshot when those things sprout.
