APWhen the Chargers declared an intention to convert running back Ryan Mathews into a workhorse this season, many wondered whether he’d stay healthy.
Few imagined that he’d be injured so quickly.
The team has announced that Mathews has a broken clavicle, and that he’ll miss the next four-to-six weeks.
Mathews will have surgery on Friday.
The injury bumps up the likes of Ronnie Brown, Jackie Battle, Curtis Brinkley, Michael Hayes, and Edwin Baker.
The Chargers also could try to sign an available veteran, like Cedric Benson. Or the Chargers can wait for the coming roster cuts. Or the Chargers can swing a trade with a team that believes it has more running backs than it needs.
Or the Chargers can just pass the ball more.

…..Somewhere in the world LT is smiling
Don’t let Ronnie brown run the goal line option pass
This Chargers fan says “Adios!” to Ryan Mathews… Sorry bud, but you’ve taken too many sick days lately…
Hey, is L.T. available?
But it’s his year…
Man, to think that I was really upset when the Texans didn’t get this guy in the draft .Bullet dodged!
It’s just one thing after another with this guy.
Ronnie Brown is like “YES!”
Good thing they resigned Sproles for peanuts last off season….Oh
Well good thing they at least resigned Tolbert for peanuts…Oh
Shh? You hear that? It’s Norv Turner printing resumes.
I missed how this happened…did he try to stick his neck out the window that is closing on the them?
Tough break (no pun intended) for the Super Chargers.
It’s tough for a team to lose it’s supposed workhorse running back.
And like the article states, many questioned if Ryan Mathews could stay healthy.
Here’s to hoping Darren McFadden stays healthy for the Raiders.
Why do I mention him?
Mathews is the only running back in the league more fragile than DMC.
Ryan “China Doll” Mathews.
Note to self: Never draft before pre-season.
There goes my fantasy team!!
oh my…this is hilarious. Is he still planning on ‘Beasting’ this season?
These kids that are injury prone should let their play speak for them. This also is why the Chargers should’ve kept Tolbert. Who is far more durable than Matthews anyways.
Ryan Mathews hurt? Shocker! In other news, Donovan Mcnabb thinks he’s still a starter in the nfl.
I’m still trying to figure out what the hell AJ was thinking when getting rid of Mike Turner. And the next year getting rid of LT. WTF.
Get Ricky Williams out of retirement and reunite him with Ronnie brown.
Note to self…stay away from the Bolts during this upcoming fantasy draft.
@hcatt44 sir your the ignorant person I’ve ever read on here. AND THERE IS ALLOT.
Why on earth would LT be happy RM got hurt? Mathews looked up to LT while growing up, heck still does. Why would LT wish this young man harm in anyway?
Let alone the fact LT left on his own terms, that he asked to be released before FA started few years back and asked to retire a Charger.
And this is exactly what we all expected to happen. A.J. Smith = one of the worst GMs in the NFL.
Just put the guy in bubble wrap and ship him off to another team that wants to deal with him.
God this guy is fragile!……..Bust!
I found some work for Travis Henry…
And that’s why you don’t schedule a fantasy football draft before week two of the preseason.
now that’s what you call a workhorse!!!!
That’s what they get for not wanting to pay Darren Sproles 2yrs ago & trying to low ball Mike Tolbert. How the hell the GM still his job is beyond me!?!
must be related to Vick
probably on his couch with his helmet on.
well so much for his breakout season…. eat is you powder blue sissies. Anyway, hope he recovers fast, hate to see an injury this bad, this early on.
getting rid of Sproles was brilliant!!!! give that GM an award
Ryan Mathews = pretzel
Guy relax, he’ll excel the second he gets traded to a real team.
Makes CJ.5k look more tempting now. Wow there are very few left for redraft leagues
They call me Mr. Glass
bluyellowdevil
lol wow man take it easy
i wasn’t being dead serious about my joke dude.
Just meant that LT did a lot for that franchise and since he’s been gone they haven’t made a playoff appearance since.
So yeah call me ignorant now
And call yourself a hypocrite!!
BOOM POW BURN OUCH
Chargers last playoff appearance was in 2009…
When they had LT
Just saying
haha i called this months ago.. poor Chargers fans.. they gotta put up with that chump rivers and this guy.
Too bad for the kid, but some people here make it sound like he never plays. He missed two games last year. That’s not that bad for a RB.
If it’s four weeks he’ll miss one game, if it’s six weeks he’ll miss three games. This is not a deal-breaker for Ryan Mathews’ success this season.
As a Chargers fan I am DONE w/Mathews….If he’s not breaking a nail, he’s fumbling the ball in the biggest games of the season, dude shows up only after he has helped fumble them out of the playoffs, fine you don’t want to pay Tolbert or Sproles, but why didn’t you sign Michael Bush in the off season Lord of no rings?:( what in the hell made you think Mr. glass could make 16 games?
WTH, is Cedric Benson posting you for all this pub?
*Paying
San Diego, than you for lowballing Tolbert and allowing Carolina to get him for even less than you offered. We now have 4 viable running threats in our backfield, how many do you have?
hahahahahaha
Sad to see want to see if he can into a top tier back
“must be related to Vick”
Vick didn’t break anything clown.

Don’t let Ronnie brown run the goal line option pass
——————————————————-
As a Niner fan, I still love that play….everytime I watch the replay, I think, this time it will work ,but it never does…
They were delusional in thinking playing this guy up as a ‘workhorse’ back. He’s way to fragile, as was proven tonight. Without Tolbert now, they’re hurting.
With Phillip Rivers and the Addition of robert mechum who was underutilized I would just think the chargers end up throwing much more Meachum is a heck of a WR it was just hard to get him the ball in NO because of the armada of WR’s the saints had he will shine when given the chance. Just throw 1st run 2nd
Lovely.
Now, when they don’t make the playoffs again and Dean Spanos once again doesn’t fire Norv and AJ, he can start his speech off with how Mathews got hurt right off the bat and that really set the tone for the whole season.
Norv and AJ just got another year of job security. Once again, it’s not their fault……….
He’s a bust
Can’t say I’m surprised
time for benson to swoop in
Tough luck Chargers…hahahahahahah!!!
things like this are why you should have your fantasy draft as close as possible to the season opener
People in glass houses shouldn’t throw ston…
Mr.Matthews..? Oh for pete’s sake…
Ryan Mattews aka “BUST from BAKERSFIELD “
the bob sanders of running backs, always hurt
chargers havent had a losing season since the year before rivers was drafted… lots of other teams in the league would have loved to be able and say that overthe last almost decade.mathews islosing the patience of alot of people!! LT coming out of retirement??? seau did!
MJD is probably available at an alltime low value for 2 1st round and a 2nd round draft pick. Mjd is from LA area and it would workout in their favor as well.
HUGE LT fan but didn’t he get dinged in that playoff game?
Thank God Mr Spanos is so cheap that AJ and Norval will be there for the remainder of their contracts.
A Raider fan couldn’t ask for more.
Just another great draft pick from AJ Smith. As a Raider fan im LMFAO…
He probably broke it in the car wreck he was in and covered it up to make it look like it happened in a game.
OH no!!! And finally succumbing to the annual hype about the Bolts – I was finishing up the paperwork for a 2nd mortgage to go place on their winning the Super Bowl.
Geesh – talk about disappointing – and now it’s back to Hapless Bolts.
SOFT
Wow, how pathetic. Way to talk yourself up Matthews and end up hurt like normal. Your a complete waste of life.
Or they can trade for MJD
…and this is my my leagues draft at the end of August
Man…Couldnt this have happened to a 49er instead? (sigh)
I’ve been saying the O-line is going to be horrible, and now they don’t even have their #1 back.
Yeah, you can cancel the Chargers Superbowl Express guys. The Silver & Black is ready and waiting for September 10th.
Just so people are informed Tolbert was never low balled by San Diego he actually took $1M to go play for Carolina.
^ Took $1M less than what San Diego offered.
Ryan Matthews is a china doll
It’s rather pathetic watching the faid fans dog this guy when they own the original marshmallow man at RB.
That said, it’s tough losing your starter so early, but the hype was unrealistic.
Everyone knows the class in this division, and in most of the league as a whole is Jamaal Charles. And it aint even close.
At least this injury likely saves us the trouble of any talking heads on the various sports networks picking the Chargers to go deep in the playoffs.
this dude is made out of glass..sucks because he is very talented but Dolphins definitely won that trade. Matthews for Odrick/Misi
I’m stunned and surprised by a few things here.
First, it’s a broken collarbone. That doesn’t happen from a lack of conditioning or lack of effort. Maybe he wasn’t drinking enough milk, but other than that, it’s just a string of bad luck.
Second, who knew there were this many Chargers fans?
kidpresentable:
It’s the same Charger fan posting under different names, over and over.
Yess!
LMAO @ Dumbolt !!! It’s okay like your team slogan says “San Diego Chargers just wait till next year”. Yeah McFadden is definitly injury prone but at least he produces when he is healthy Ryan Matrhews does about the same when he is on the field or on the bench. So you shouldn’t see much drop off at that position.
Not a Charger fan but really, the guy broke a bone. Could have happened to anyone. Its the aches and pains that some guys dont play through that makes a player soft. Still, I was wary of his durability even though the fantasy shows had him going pretty high.
Hey if a team sucks and plays lousy I can understand the sarcasm. I have no love for the ‘Bolts, but the guy broke a bone. Give him a break! (no pun).
Those that live in glass houses…
Wanna trade?
Sincerely,
Jim Harbaugh on behalf of Anthony Dixon
Seriously!! Out of the top 10 running backs last year, only CJ2K and rayray rice did not miss time. What is happening to our nfl rb’s so that they are becoming an extinct species? The 70′s, 80′s and 90′s were not like this. Guys always got hurt, but not at the rate these dudes do.
We all know players are bigger, stronger, and most of all, faster than ever, but dudes are going down without receiving vicious hits. It’s not only running backs, because of injuries the redskins started 3 non-starters across the O-line, then Trent wiliams got hurt! Insane!
The NFL is really turning into Survival of the Fittest. Between the behavior and drug suspensions, and injuries, the leauge will probably lose 25- 35 percent of it’s players.
Well it was either get broken in preseason or have the face the Raiders D in week one……he chose wisely.
