The St. Louis Rams squared off with the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason opener for both teams Sunday afternoon. Under the direction of quarterback Sam Bradford, the Rams’ offense sputtered, scoring no points on two possessions.

Bradford, who struggled last season battling a recurring high ankle sprain, completed 8-of-10 throws for 60 yards. We had him down for 19 snaps played in Sunday’s exhibition game. Bradford’s best throw of the preseason opener came on a 13-yard slant to receiver Austin Pettis. Otherwise, Bradford’s completions were dumpoff-type plays. He rushed his two incompletions due to pressure from the Colts’ defense.

Tailback Steven Jackson looked quick and powerful, and he’ll surely be the centerpiece of new coach Jeff Fisher’s St. Louis offense. The Rams run blocked well, allowing Jackson to compile 23 yards on five touches before giving way to rookie Isaiah Pead.

Just looking at the makeup of the Rams’ roster, it’s hard to be optimistic about their 2012 passing game. They don’t pass protect well, and their receivers are rotational types who will likely play in a committee. Fisher’s actions have indicated that he realizes the foundation of St. Louis’ offense needs to be the running attack.

Expect Jackson to be the lead dog in this offense this year.
