McCarthy won’t let Jennings play until he’s “100 percent”

Greg Jennings AP

Packers receiver Greg Jennings has missed nearly two weeks with a concussion suffered during the team’s annual Family Night scrimmage.  According to the Associated Press, it’s unlikely that Jennings will play on Thursday, when the Packers host the Browns in Week Two of the preseason.

Jennings also is unlikely to play until he is back to full strength.  Said coach Mike McCarthy, “We’re not going to put him out there until we’re 100 percent that he’s clear.”

It’s unclear when that will happen.  It’s clear that the Packers need him.

And it’s encouraging that the Packers are setting that aside and focusing on ensuring that Jennings is healthy before he sets foot on the field again.

This is just plain smart. Any argument makes no sense.

definitely don’t need to rush him back with the other wr’s on the roster. let him get back to 100% for the games that matter, he’ll be alright.

With the inexperience of the rest of the receiving corps, that may not be a bad thing. Let them work Cobb out of the slot, and run Jordy and Jim Jones wide, use Driver as a spell guy, see what Gurley and Shakey are all about, try out some other rookies, and get Greg back for week one with some knowledge of what these other guys are worth. Not a bad deal. At any rate, they get to see what Cobb does wide with Donald in the slot, and see what to expect when they need to change things up a little. I think this years receivers are more dangerous than last years, and last years they were amazing.

    GO PACK GO!!

Well a one legged Jennings is still better then any receiver the Seahawks have.

    Who cares, it’s the Packers.

With all the injuries adding up. The last thing the pack needs is Jennings to be in jeopardy of getting re-injured!!!

  8. packfaninvikeland says: Aug 15, 2012 3:08 AM

He is our one and only deep threat so no sh*t we wont play him until he’s ready. Driver in the slot can’t be a number 1. Jones, not ready for it, cant rely too much on the TE position since it has issues catching at times, dominating other times. RB’s benson cant just fill in ASAP. Packers should worry right now, thank god, there are 3 weeks to get healthy.

Yeah if only the Vikings would do the same with AP… Dude needs to be 100%

  10. dino2997 says: Aug 15, 2012 3:51 AM

Why is it clear that the Packers need him? They’ve only played 1 preseason game. Are they afraid they might lose the next one?

A wise choice. Jennings is far too valuable to risk getting him banged up in a meaningless game against the Browns.

  14. staffordsyear says: Aug 15, 2012 6:13 AM

With that record setting defense you bet they need him.

  15. cooklynn17 says: Aug 15, 2012 6:15 AM

    Really Mike?

That’s interesting considering you had a healthy MVP QB on your team sit for week 17 and then complain that you beat yourselves in the playoffs. Maybe the Giants had something to do with that combined with the fact that you are just a straight up idiot head coach that made a bone head move thinking you had it in the bag and then got destroyed and embarrassed at home and on national tv.

And yes I know the pre-season is not the playoffs but the same rule applies.

Why risk the health of his best wide out?! McCarthy still showing he is smart.

Yeah, he’s such a bone head… considering he coached up that no.1 scoring offense, most of those guys (aside from Driver) were all coached up by him, developed by him, then were good enough to win 15 games in spite of the awful defense… yeah, he’s a stupid coach… smh.

  18. jimmysee says: Aug 15, 2012 8:53 AM

    It’s pretty win-win.

Jennings gets healthy and the young receivers at the bottom of the depth chart, like Borel and Gurley and Smithson get field time.

Though I am a niners fan,I admire what Mike McCarthy and the Packers are doing.
They’ve put the health of Jennings ahead of the organizational goals of winning.

    Very classy.

You’ve been reading the Twin Cities’ papers too long.

Jordy Nelson was the leading WR on the Pack last season and was called an “elite” receiver, as reported on PFT last week. He also had more YAC than any other WR in GB in 2011.

  21. rpiotr01 says: Aug 15, 2012 11:18 AM

McCarthy’s attitude is admirable and in line with current feelings on player safety, but how about letting Jennings speak about this? I’m glad MM is the coach in GB but he has never been forthcoming about player injuries and it seems to get worse every year with him. Injuries are downplayed and generalized verbally to the point of uselessness, even though their actions tell the whole story. Clearly Greg is not well – why not let him tell his side of it?

  22. glac1 says: Aug 15, 2012 11:49 AM

Look at the calendar. It’s mid August and we know what Jennings can do..

  23. realtimeeyes says: Aug 15, 2012 12:16 PM

Great talk in August; what would he do in January?

  24. edsbay says: Aug 15, 2012 12:54 PM

I would argue and say that Jordy may be a bigger all around threat then Jennings….dude is money all over the field!

  25. paepae805 says: Aug 15, 2012 1:29 PM

Lets bring back Robert Brooks and Anthony Morgan. Might as well throw in Andre “Bad Moon” Rison as well. Go Pack!

  26. filthymcnasty1 says: Aug 15, 2012 1:34 PM

It’s a concussion. I doubt they are being any more careful with Jennings than they are with anyone else.

  27. ponderthis12 says: Aug 15, 2012 2:57 PM

Wow that mccarthy is so smart! He won’t start a pro bowl receiver in a meaning less preseason game! So classy. Stupid non-story
