Rex Ryan: I don’t know if we’ll have the No. 1 D, but we’ll be Top 5

Reuters

Jets coach Rex Ryan isn’t done making guarantees. He’s just making his guarantees slightly less brazen.

So while Ryan isn’t going to promise that his team will be the best in the NFL, as he has in the past, he’s still guaranteeing that he’ll be the best defensive coach in the NFL. And while he won’t guarantee that the Jets will have the best defense in the NFL, he is guaranteeing that they’ll at least be among the five best defenses in the league.

“Am I confident in our defense? Absolutely,” Ryan said today, via the Star-Ledger. “Granted, I said top five. That’s a given. I don’t care who’s out there. . . . That’s how confident we are. We have a great system, we have a great group of players and we have a great group of coaches.”

But as confident as Ryan is, he’s not willing to say the Jets will have the best defense in football.

“Will we have the best defense in the league? I don’t know,” he said. “There are a lot of good defenses out there. I certainly think putting out that kind of defense is a goal of ours every year. We’ll see. I feel good. A lot of things have to happen. . . . We know that we’ve had a history here of wanting to have the best defense in the league, even though it has been only three years. That’s what we’re shooting for.”

Ryan is guaranteeing only that he’ll be the coach of one of the five best defenses in the NFL, not that he’ll be the coach of the defense that wins the Super Bowl. By Ryan’s standards, that’s modesty.

  1. Jets will be lucky to be in the top five teams in their CONFERENCE! Their O line is very poor and their receivers are mediocre at best.
Given that, how are they going to be able to get yards running. It is a moot point how talented their defense is or where they are ranked.

  2. Of all the things he’s bragged about, this one is actually believable. Except for injuries, I’d be surprised if they weren’t at least top 10 in Defense, so top 5 isn’t a big stretch.

  3. Least he didn’t say #1 defense…Everyone knows that spot the Steelers own every year! Thank ya very much thanks for coming

  4. The Jets never give this garbage a break, do they? It’s become more comical than annoying. Next stop though is ‘pathetic’.

But this weekend is “Jets Superbowl” … the annual pre-season game with the Giants … that they always play to win … while everyone else is evaluating depth.

  5. In all my years of watching team sports (somewhere around 50) I don’t know if I have ever seen a Head Coach that is as much of a bafoon when it comes to guarantees as RR. It is physically impossible for him to just shut up and coach.

  6. Shoot for the stars Rex, just don’t overshoot, you already have New York riled up over your guarantee win of the Superbowl that you flopped on.
Maybe a top 10 Defense, but not top 5. If I was him I’d be much more worried about my Offense, because they are gonna need some help this year.

  7. I’m not a Ryan fan, but nobody should be killing him for these comments. He said they’ll be top 5 at worst. Well, they’ve been top 5 all 3 years of Ryan’s tenure with the Jets. So it’s not an outrageous statement in the least.

  8. Rex, in order to win an NFL football game you have to out-score the opponent not out-talk them.

  9. if you guys hate so much…why do you even bother to post?Find something productive to do with your time… Rex is a GREAT defensive coach…nuff said. He has the right to run his mouth…

  10. well, Rex hasn’t guaranteed a Super Bowl but he still talks too much. Most of his pressers seem to sound like this., “Sanchez looks great, our defense looks great, our rookies look great, Tebow looks great, bla-ba-blah-ba-blah-blah-blah

  11. Jets are in a tailspin, defense included. Rex is delusional. What’s his excuse gonna be this year after they finish 7-9??

  12. I don’t think the Jets will be the League Champs, but I definitely think they’ll be Top 32.

  13. Hulkhogansays lol man did I need a good laugh your redskins number 1 defense and you don’t even put the best defense the 9ers. Wow the jealousy must be pouring out of your skin. Let’s see we have 6 pro bowlers on are team 3 all pros and 1 who was runner up for def MVP. What exactly do the tedskins have orakpo and um ya that’s it and what’s funny about that is aldon Smith is the superior pass rusher. Plus they just had best young pass rusher. On NFL LIVE and Brian wasn’t even brought up and A.Smith won the panels vote. So it’s not just me saying it.

  14. Much like Chad Johnson, RR loves the Media Attention he gets. It may get old to us, as fans from Different markets, but it’s really not entirely his fault! The “Mother Ship” as they are called (ESPN, to those completely out of the loop) are the ones to blame! They have become the TMZ of sports! Their circus spends 99% of their time with the Giants, Jets, Cowboys, Patriots & now Denver! The rest of the league are an after thought! Miami , they are the team on Hard Knocks this year, and they barely get coverage! It gets really old!
So when , Rex has that Micophone in his face Constantly, entertaining us has become his MO

  15. Total yards allowed is a garbage stat for defenses though and to me PTS/G is a better way to gauge a defense. I mean who cares how many yards you give up as long as the offense doesn’t score.

But in the end team defensive stats are misleading because they never take in account what kind of shape the offense left them in.

If your offense isn’t any good than the defense is going to be on the field more often which means they are going to surrender more yards and points.

Jet’s defense in 2011 were 5th in yards but 20th in PTS/G which means the offense left them in a lot of lousy situations by giving the opposing team lots of short fields.

There should be defensive stats that factor in time on field and starting position if we really want to judge how great a defense is.

  16. “does rex ryan ever stop talking?”

It’s the same routine with every other coach in the league–weekly press conference, media asks him questions, he responds to them, and his responses get printed. The NFL forces him to participate, and he just happens to be one of the only ones who does so in a genuine and candid fashion. It’s not like he calls up the Associated Press and says, “Hey, you folks at the AP! I’ll give you $1000 if you print my next prediction! Pleeeease?” If you don’t like hearing what he says, my advice to you would be to stop clicking the damn links. If people like you weren’t so interested in what he has to say then he’d get printed a whole lot less often.

You think the Giants get too much coverage from ESPN? It must be happening when I’m asleep, because I’ve seen very little time, if any, devoted to the current SB Champs, and I’m being 100% serious.

If I was living in a cave for 20 years with no outside information available the entire time, and I finally came back to civilization to watch ESPN, I’d think there were only 2 NFL teams left. The Jests and the Broncos. Unless there is some kind of ugly, stupid controversy involving a player from another team, all other teams are completely ignored.

“Points per game” is a lousy measure of defenses for a very simple reason: it includes points allowed by the offense and special teams.

If a team throws an interception that’s returned for a touchdown; allows a punt-return touchdown; and then loses a fumble inside its own 10, that’s going to result in a lot of points, but none of them had anything to do with the defense.

So yardage is a much better measure than points allowed. But the best statistic is yardage allowed per snap.

  19. New Rex Lite. If he would of said he thinks his Defense would be top 25 now that would be news. Come on media..this Rex and Tebow news is boring stuff.

  20. a reporter asked rex at post practice presser if he expected the d to be top 5 again. what should have he said? “no”?

am i the only one who thinks it’s cute how all you guys along with the authors of the site cant get enough of the jets?

  21. Rex also guarantees that the Jets will finish in the top 4 in the AFCE, but won’t guarantee# 1 though.

  22. NFL players and coaches seem to be watching too much NFLN and ESPN. “Top 10” this, “Top 5” that. Just focus on having the top record.

  23. As a head coach he ought to realize that all that matters are Wins. Offensive and defensive rankings have no relevance all that matters are wins. Comments like this set the stage for team disharmony pitting O vs D.

  24. The Jets will win 5 games this year. They are espn champions. Most overrated in history of NFL. They have no QB, no RB and their 2nd best corner is their best WR cuz Santonio hurt his vag.

  25. As a head coach all Rex should care about is winning. Defensive rankings mean nothing, wins mean everything! This is the stuff that sets up the locker room for dysfunction when you lose 13-6 week after week.

  26. Somehow, inexplicably, Rex has yet to learn that games are won on the field. He also hasn’t figured out that how teams rank in any category other than wins and losses is irrelevant. He simply can’t just shut up and let ’em play the games.

  27. So that’s was your comeback hogansays You just ignore the fact you put redskins and packers along with a very old steelers defense as top 5 defenses. I call you out on your choices and not putting 9ers in top 5 along with saying that, RG3 is second tier mick Vick. So your big comeback is well I just think RG3 is saving it all. Well side step the question. Typical instead of standing up and defending your real simple minded top 5 defenses. Or why RG3 is anymore than another injury prone run first Mick Vick. You just say oh well I think lol well ok brother!! Just write things and than don’t defend it.

  28. Sexy Rexy is from the Ryan Family..Very big personalities, arrogant and loud..Ryan is a defensive minded guy..He benefits from being too chaotic in a weird way..Thats why I think he does relate very well with Tebow in a psyche way but the point is when the League is begging all teams to go thru the air, Ryan plans be old- fashion smash-mouth football. Trust me, the Jets will have 2 starting Qbs as the season goes..Defensively, we all know he will be strong in that area becoz thats his expertise..heck they will be Top 5

You done lost your damn mind!

How you left the Texans out of your “list” is a mystery to me and every NFL fan alive today!

  30. I need to say Rex Ryan is such a bad coach he can’t do anything right. First off when he goes out and gurantees, He ends up looking like a fool cause he is wrong. Than instead of just shutting up like the real coaches in NFL (Billichexk,Tomlin, harbaugh brothers, and couglin) he instead has to open his mouth again but now he looks like he doesn’t have faith in his team. It’s hey guys I’m not sure you can be the best defense. Which is a slap to there face. Rex is just terriable I mean what has a really done. He acts like he is so great. Well 1 year he had the jets play as a top 5 defense once yes he went to 2 AFC title games but look it up defense was only top 5 once. Than he will say but look what I did with Ravens wrong. Marvin Lewis put the defense together and grew them. He took over a defense with ray Lewis,Ed Reed,Terrell Suggs & Nagta hell almost anyone could look good coaching that team. Case in point Mike Nolan did it before him. How did his HC stint work Rex thinks he has all this swagger but his players have to pick up on same thing as I did which is he was handed a dynasty of a defense. He hasn’t done jack as HC he again made himself look like an idiot. But this time it’s by not supporting his team. Rex shut the hell up and coach and once you do something as a HC than talk even though the great ones don’t hey Rex put this is in pipe and smoke it week 4 you play a real coach and a real team not to mention a real defense. So take notes as you are worked over plus enjoy getting fired at the end of season and unemployment line lol good thing you lost weight cause you are gonna need a lot of food stamps. Hahaha

  31. For everyone who comes on here to talk smack about Rex never shutting up needs to shut up. Every NFL coach talks not his fault PFT can’t stop writing about them every chance they get. Defensive ranking mean nothing??? Defenses wins championships

  32. This guy needs to just shut the f**k up. Who cares, Rex? Yeah, you think you are the man, we get it. F**k this guy and the Oscar Meyer Hotdog Truck he rode in on. Overrated bunch of jackasses.

  33. No Ryan, you do not have the TOP 5 defense in the league. DARELLE REVIS have the TOP 5 defense in the league. You are nothing but a typical 3 years and you’re out coach if it wasn’t for Revis bailing you out year in and year out.

What kind of freakin coach don’t know that there’s turmoil goin on within his team?? You’re the friggan coach for god’s sake.

Bravo Space…Great post. Yet we get the same comments here everyday with any Jets stories. Its crazy how everyone hates and are sick of the Jets but still click the link and even take time to comments. Who’s obsessed with who?

  35. his d better be good, i see them spending ALOT of time on the field ! how many 3 n outs before little timmy replaces markymark? you still gotta score something to win ……hello 4-12 goodbye rex

  36. This is the problem with ryan. He behaves more like a Defensive coordinator than head coach. He really should be worried about the offense but he just chooses to ignore it and let that coach handle it and then blame them in the end like brian schottenhiemer. Being a head coach having your hands on everything ..not just keep salivating on the defense.
