Santonio Holmes, Sione Pouha could miss entire preseason

When wide receiver Santonio Holmes first injured his ribs, the Jets expressed relief that the injury was to cartilage as opposed to a broken bone.

That relief is starting to look a bit premature. Holmes will miss his second straight preseason game when the Jets face the Giants on Saturday and missed practice again on Wednesday with back tightness thrown on top of his rib injury. Coach Rex Ryan was asked if there was a chance Holmes would be out through the entire preseason schedule.

“Certainly it’s possible,” Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “But don’t think that will be the case.”

In a rare moment of understatement, Ryan said that the injuries to the team’s receivers created a situation that was “certainly not ideal” for the Jets. Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens have also missed time with injuries during camp and rookie Stephen Hill gave them a scare Tuesday when he injured his finger. Tests revealed no serious injury for Hill, which qualifies as great news for the Jets right now.

Less great is the news on nose tackle Sione Pouha. Pouha hasn’t practiced August 1st because of a forehead laceration and back problems. Pouha had an MRI on his back Wednesday that showed no structural damage, but Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that Pouha said he expects to miss the rest of the preseason and that the training staff has worked out a plan designed to get him ready for Week One.
