Last year, the Chiefs lost starting safety Eric Berry in Week One. This year, the team’s other starting safety has an injury, before the real games even start.
Kendrick Lewis injured his right shoulder on Saturday night against the Rams. Arm in a sling, he’s out indefinitely.
Coach Romeo Crennel said after the game only that Lewis will miss “a bit of time” and that injured reserve is not an option at this point for Lewis.
“He has to have no surgery or anything like that, but he has to rest that shoulder and immobilize it a little bit before we can start movement,” Crennel said, via the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, cornerback Brandon Carr is gone and cornerback Brandon Flowers hasn’t practiced since July 31 due to a bruised heel.
Lewis started every game in 2011. Without him, Abram Elam likely moves to the top of the depth chart.
