Louis Delmas seems no closer to a return

When Lions safety Louis Delmas needed knee surgery, it immediately cast doubt on his availability for the preseason.

But with the clock ticking toward the regular season, there doesn’t seem to be a load of optimism coming from the Lions.

“We’re closing in on that [getting Delmas ready for the regular season] for sure,” Schwartz said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. “He’s not to the point that he’s even on a progression right now. He’s week-to-week. He’s not day-to-day.

“A lot of those other guys are day-to-day as they come out. He’s week-to-week.”

John Wendling has been working with the starters in his absence, and seems likely to continue to.

Any time a coach is willing to budge from the cliched “day-to-day” answer, it’s seldom a good sign.

And with less than three weeks to go before the opener, they’re running out of weeks in week-to-week.

What’s sad is that John Wendling was the best Lions DB in the Ravens game.

Delmas can’t be relied upon. So far, Wendling and Erik Coleman have actually played well, but it’s not who I would want to see remain for the full season. The Lions need to address this position as soon as possible. Amari Spievey needs to be cut, since he just can’t seem to tackle well, and consistently takes bad angles toward receivers.

    *Sigh*

Luckily we play the Rams week 1 at home. If we can’t manage without him for that game then we have much bigger problems.

We need him back by week 2, so he can knock Randy Moss back into retirement.

Just think, Delmas was one pick away from becoming a New England Patriot. Thank goodness they missed him!
