Panthers’ Steve Smith misses practice with infection in left foot

Panthers receiver Steve Smith missed practice today because he has an infection in his left foot — an issue serious enough that he’s currently on crutches.

But a Panthers official told Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer that the infection is not expected to cause Smith to miss significant time. Smith is receiving antibiotics, and the Panthers will see how well he responds to that treatment before deciding whether he’ll play on Sunday night against the Jets.

Smith has been limited to one practice since the Panthers’ preseason game against the Dolphins on Friday. He hasn’t seen a lot of action in the preseason, catching one pass in each preseason game, one for four yards and one for 15 yards.

Brandon LaFell, who would be the Panthers’ No. 1 receiver in Smith’s absence, called the 33-year-old Smith “Ironman” and said he expects Smith back soon.
