Rams sign Vernon Gholston

Vernon Gholston, who was one of the biggest draft busts in recent history as the sixth overall pick in 2008, is back in the NFL.

The Rams announced today that they have signed Gholston, a defensive end who has been out of the league since the Bears cut him at the end of the preseason last year.

After an impressive college career at Ohio State, Gholston looked like he had the talent to be a great NFL pass rusher. But he was a huge disappointment as a draft pick of the Jets, who finally released him after three seasons and zero sacks. Gholston caught on with the Bears after the lockout last year, but he didn’t last long.

Gholston will move into the roster spot that was opened up when the Rams traded cornerback Josh Gordy to the Colts.

Brian schottenheimer loved him with the jets because he really went out of his way to keep his QBs upright in practice

LOL. I’m pretty sure his younger brother, Will (currently starting for Michigan State), is already a better player than Vernon will ever be. Good luck to the Rams!

I wonder if he will ever get a sack.

…this may be the only guy can’t get past Wayne Hunter…

  6. ramcountry says: Aug 22, 2012 8:20 PM

    Of course they did.

We’re going after the single season sack record, remember.

Good guy, not so good football player. Good luck to him.

    All the best to him.

Don’t see him making the 53 though, a bit too late into Training Camp for him to make an impression. Would love to see his game finally come together, but the odds of that aren’t great.

I think Quinn and Long will have at least 20-25 sacks between them this season

Guess the Rams needed someone to take a roster spot until cutdown day…

Damn, hopefully this verbal bashing from everyone will serve as an awakening. It’s like fuel for vengeance, remember when that Japanese dude from pearl harbor said…..

“I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.”

As desparate teams are wont to do. The game has apparently passes Jeff Fisher by.

  17. nyjets1017 says: Aug 22, 2012 10:22 PM

He made like 22 million dollars or
Something. Did he really need to play? I woulda called it a day

  18. chesslungo says: Aug 22, 2012 10:34 PM

Gholston is freakish athlete. If he ever learns how to play FB he could be a good role player

We need Farve to come out of retirement to give Gholston a “Strahan Special”

    Gholston is a friggin’ joke!

The guy who made Mike Mamula look like Jason Pierre-Paul gets a shot instead of Andre Carter???

Rams fans, you hired a bad football man! Jeff Fisher drafted Janoris Jenkins, got no weapons for Sam Bradford, kept Jason Smith at OT, showed interest in Albert Haynesworth, didn’t sign Andre Carter, and monitored nothing with subject to Gregg Williams and the alleged bounties that the NFL kept saying “stop, stop, stop” to!!!

This guy can’t get you a Super Bowl and he only had 6 winning seasons out of 17 in Tennessee for a reason!!!!

  22. cgsuddeath says: Aug 22, 2012 11:11 PM

As I recall Rajbais, his Tennesse Titan’s team went to the Super Bowl and nearly came back to win it.Also, his team was the first to stop the Rams winning streak in the same year.He is a coach of a NFL team so I will go by his decisions instead of any poster on this board.

Lets look at this from another viewpoint moron

Janoris Jenkins is a top 10 talent on the field.
No weapons as you say-Givens and Quick havent even played a regular season snap yet so premature on that one.Jason Smith-may or may not start. Showing interest in Haynesworth but DIDN’T sign him. Andre Carter is coming off major surgery so who knows if he can play. Gregg Williams-Was Fisher supposed to babysit a grown man and know everyting? 6 winning records in 17 seasons-He had 1 SB appearance that he almost won PLUS coached with a tightwad owner who wouldn’t spend money

You know your team is bad if this dude makes your roster.

  26. randomcommenter says: Aug 23, 2012 12:18 AM

Gholston and Jason Smith can argue who’s the bigger bust.

  27. randallflagg52 says: Aug 23, 2012 2:02 AM

You know that last desperate gasp of air that drowning people take before they go under for good?

I wasn’t expecting it this early into the Rams season.

  28. stevedubs11 says: Aug 23, 2012 2:13 AM

rajbais, I’m a st. Louis native and there for am obligated to defend the rams. you pegged Jeff Fisher on the dot though. A career 54%winning record, 4-6 in the playoffs including 2 home losses, 5 more losing seasons than our former head coach Steve Spagnuolo. Only thing you’re wrong about is Janoris Jenkins. He’s a 1st round talent that we got in the 2nd with 1 of our 3 2nd round picks. Only reason he didn’t go in the 1st was because of his off-field issues, but we can take that risk. He was able to cover and shut down A.J. Green in College and has been incredible in our preseason. That’s all I got.

Jets defense not in top 5 anymore…. correlation????

    ____________

He’s attempting to field a D that can hold the score to a manageable level. Also regardless of how many winning seasons he had in Tennessee/Houston, he had 6 playoff appearance, 5 playoff wins, 2 AFC championship appearance, 1 AFC championship, 3 division championships, 6 times posted double digit wins, 4 times posted 12 wins or more in a season, and had a 147-126 record in 16.5 seasons. The team moved during his tenure, and did I mention that it is owned by Bud Adams. In my book if you manage a .500 record under Bud Adams you must be pretty good.

This dude ranks up there with Ryan Leaf in the rarefied air of biggest bust EVER!

The Rams are in real trouble if they resorted to signing this guy.

As a Jets fan, I hope this kid finds a home…..never want to see someone fail at the game. Maybe this is what he needs. Best of Luck!

Ahh loved the fact that Belichick showed so much interest in this kid just to get the Jets to panic and draft him…Always kinda hoped the Patriots would pick him up and turn his career around just so they could stick it to the Jets again

    ==================================

Says the guy who’s supposed defensive genius coach ruined Adalius Thomas’ career. Belicheat can’t evaluate players to save his life. It’s a good thing he has like 30 picks each draft otherwise they’d never luck into any decent player.
