Sam Hurd may be in jail until his trial starts

Sam Hurd may have to sit in jail until he finds out whether he’ll be sitting for a much longer time in prison.

Hurd, according to a recent profile in the Chicago Tribune, tested positive twice for marijuana while free on bail pending his trial on federal drug trafficking charges.

He also allegedly purchased 30 pounds of marijuana while on bail, and then allegedly tried to buy another 200 pounds of marijuana, along with five kilograms of cocaine.

Arrested in December while a member of the Bears, Hurd now faces an effort by prosecutors to keep him behind bars until his trial begins, according to WLS-TV in Chicago.

When news of Hurd’s arrest first broke, he was characterized as a drug kingpin, reportedly with a double-digit list of NFL clients. Although Hurd may have been trying to get into the empire business, it appears that he was, at best, in the very early stages of putting together a drug ring.

That said, he allegedly did enough to face up to 40 years in prison. The trial currently is set to begin on October 9.
