Buddy Nix on Patriots: “They don’t scare me”

Buddy Nix AP

It’s not quite a Jets-level declaration, but Bills General Manager Buddy Nix said recently his team’s not intimidated in its own backyard.

In an interview for the Toronto Sun, Nix said the Bills priority remains winning the AFC East, a feat almost no one gives them a chance to do.

“Every really good coach I’ve ever been with, they emphasize [winning the division] strongly, and we always have,” Nix said. “I think it all starts there. You start depending on the wild card, and you might win 11 games and not get in. But if you win your division, even by winning eight games, you get in. So that’s what ya gotta do.”

And as everyone knows, that means getting by the Patriots, who have won double-digit games 10 of the last 11 seasons, including nine division crowns.

“No, I like high expectations,” Nix said. “I’ve never been many places where if you didn’t have ‘em, that good things happen. So I think they oughta expect a lot of us. We expect a lot out of ourselves. New England, the AFC — they don’t scare me. I think we can compete with any of ‘em, and our intention is to try to win the division.”

It’s not a Rex Ryan guarantee, or even a Ryan Kalil ad buy, but it’s a lofty goal for the Bills, who haven’t won the division since 1995.

I’d agree but…the Buffalo Bills have been irrelevant in the new millennium.

  2. grabgrabgrab says: Aug 23, 2012 1:34 PM

His team just beat the Pats last September, 34–31 in a thriller. Cool that he’s still holding on to it. But it was a different team and a different time. As a Patriot hater, I’m afraid to say that his Bills will not be winners 0f the East this year. That accolade will go to the Pats, again. Ugh.

  3. dennisatunity says: Aug 23, 2012 1:34 PM

What do you want him to say? “We’re going to fight as hard as we can for second place.”

I’m out on the West Coast and I don’t care who wins but I will say this: if you have one team that dominates for too long, it’s not healthy for the division or the conference. Change is good.

  4. mrconnors says: Aug 23, 2012 1:34 PM

They beat the Patriots one time in eight years and now they’re talking smack.

Yeah, they can win the division, if in every game Tom Brady throws 4 picks and has footballs bouncing off of guys heads that can be brought back for touchdowns. You won one fluke game.

Is it a requirement to be a blowhard if you play in NY?

  5. dirtyharry1971 says: Aug 23, 2012 1:39 PM

why would the bills GM be saying this stuff? How about winning something before running your mouth? unreal

  6. Davo says: Aug 23, 2012 1:40 PM

Newsflash: The Bills don’t scare the Patriots either!

  7. bosfaninva says: Aug 23, 2012 1:43 PM

I think it would be a much bigger story for an NFL GM to say, “You know, [Team X] really scares me.”

This is a non-story. The Bills will be much better, and still lose the division by five games to the Pats.

  8. blackandbluedivision says: Aug 23, 2012 1:43 PM

The Bills gave the Pats fits in the first match-up. But, this is a different team. Especially on D.

  9. mickeylolich1968 says: Aug 23, 2012 1:45 PM

Fine, you can talk like Rex.
Now you need to coach like Rex.
Also, you need to beat Rex…and Belichick.
    Good luck.

  10. buccaneer4ever says: Aug 23, 2012 1:48 PM

Maybe he means that, since there’s no possibility the Bills win the division, there’s no reason to be scared of the impending beatdown/collapse.

  11. robertp72383 says: Aug 23, 2012 1:55 PM

    RE: Mickeylolich1968

Well, first of all, Buddy Nix is Buffalo’s GM, not coach.

Second of all, coaching like Rex will only bring Buffalo to 8-8.

3rd of all…it’s coming. You’ll see on opening day.

  12. blacknole08 says: Aug 23, 2012 1:55 PM

Nix sounds a bit delusional. Brady has owned the Bills with the exception of two games (03 opener and last year).

Also Bills had a big lead in NE in the 1st quarter and gave up 49 unanswered points after that.

Gotta learn how to finish and play all phases of the game if you want to beat this team.

  13. onlysane1intheroom says: Aug 23, 2012 1:59 PM

Bills haven’t won the division since 95 and haven’t had a winning record since 2004.

  14. blackandbluedivision says: Aug 23, 2012 2:00 PM

When asked for a response, Bill Belichek said “Who? There’s another team in NY?”

  15. gotcaughtcheating says: Aug 23, 2012 2:06 PM

Worst division in football, bar none. If the Pats had SEC-level competition they’d have been half as successful. Unless of course they figured out a way to steal other teams signals, that always helps.

  16. kordogg says: Aug 23, 2012 2:07 PM

Buddy Nix must still think it’s the 90′s. I could bring up RECENT HISTORY of your teams progress so far in the past 12 seasons but I will not. All I ask is start coming in at least second in your division or at least win more than 7 games a season before you start poking the Patriot bear please. I like you Mr. Nix but come on -___-

  17. tcmiller30 says: Aug 23, 2012 2:09 PM

    Relax people.

Ask any coach in any sport if they’re afraid of the team predicted to win the division. You will/should get this answer everytime. The Bills look to have improved since last year. The Pats look better than last year. All we can do is watch them play the game.

  18. dariusmyles says: Aug 23, 2012 2:16 PM

You people talk so much crap. I remember when the bills had the afc east crown locked up long before the season started, year in and year out, yes it was long times ago but there’s nothing wrong with saying you don’t fear anybody and that you have the goal of winning the division…by the way what have the patriots accomplished since they got caught cheating? And bilichick only beat the bills in the Super Bowl by…cheating. Big suprise. Sorry it’s a new era in buffalo and just like the saints turned it around and the lions are turning around and the bengals too…buffalo will be back.

This is the best time to be a Bills fan. Nobody’s played a game that matters, you can pretend your QB isn’t a backup being paid like a starter, and your high-priced free agents haven’t had a chance to get hurt or disappoint.

Ask anyone in Houston or New England if they’re really missing Mario Williams or Mark Anderson. You build winners in the NFL through the draft, not by making a splash in free agency to sell tickets. I’m impressed the Bills didn’t draft a running back in the first round for like the ninth year in a row.

Lets be real last season for the Bills was a fluke. Yea Fitzpatrick had a great first few games but once teams got familiar with his scheme he was awful to watch. And what boggles my mind is how the Bills gave him that terrible contract. Then you have Stevie Johnson aka Stevie J who is more worried about his celebration rather than actually catching ball. Last year that game against the Jets summed him up when it gets down to pressure time Stevie Johnson CRACKS hes OVERRATED. Then we have this defense let up as many points as they scored. I mean their close to being as bad as the patriots are defensively. This team is going to be 6 -10 or 7-9 because lets be real they are not beating the steelers or the ravens. They will not beat the jets . They will not beat the 49ers and they will split with the pats let alone everyone else they will be playing.

    Buffalo? LOL.
    Let’s look at your history.
Your greatest player is a mass murdurer and you’re 0-4 in Super Bowls.
Maybe you should keep your head down.

  31. cpepin31 says: Aug 23, 2012 3:14 PM

Bills give the pats fits every year. Even when they are bad… As a Pats fan the Bills are the only team in the AFC East i’m even remotely worried about every season. Unless I see a early season Miami Game… but I bet they love those December games in Foxborough just the same.

Good for the Bills GM for having some confidence. Maybe we will get some good sound bites from BB coming off the field after the first game. Kinda like “the best defence in the NFL… Suck my Bleeeeeep.”

Dude…most of the Patriots fans I know have not forgoten. We were fans in hte early 70s and we were still with them through tough times. There is no need to hate. Enjoy your team’s sucess and appreciate good football, even if it is the expense of your team. They will be back as contenders in short order.

  33. tcmiller30 says: Aug 23, 2012 3:19 PM

“Ask anyone in Houston or New England if they’re really missing Mario Williams or Mark Anderson”

So you’re upset that Nix says he’s not scared of NE in the preseason, where they haven’t had time to prove themselves on the field. Then you turn around and tell him to ask the Texans and Pats how little they miss Anderson and Mario? You see the conundrum there right? All we have is talk at this point.

And I’d also like to point out that these teams haven’t win a Super Bowl in a while and NE has had brutal drafts lately. I’ll follow the Giants plan of building through the trenches. Also, 7 starters (Dareus Williams Shepard Williams Gilmore Byrd Wilson) on the D alone were drafted/undrafted FA pickups by Buffalo. And I think on offense you’ve got another 8 (Stevie Freddie Glenn Hairston levitre wood graham Nelson) just to be sure.

The Bills don’t give the Patriots fits at all. 20-2 in the Brady era and an average score of 28-13. The Bills look like they are better now, but they have been tomato cans for more than 10 years.

  37. CKL says: Aug 23, 2012 3:40 PM

I’m a Pats fan and see nothing wrong with what Nix said, just like I didn’t when RR said something similar in 09. All the same, I still like that BB says nothing. :)

  38. onlysane1intheroom says: Aug 23, 2012 3:59 PM

buddy…you’re sooo wrong. Patriot fans certainly remember those painful 1-15, 2-14 seasons…the Dick MacPherson era, Rod Rust, the sexual harrassment in the locker room. We remember, which is why we have very much enjoyed the past TWELVE years (and counting). Real fans know success is fleeting.. More impressive is SUSTAINED success, which is something Kraft, Belichick and Brady have brought to the fans of NE.

  39. gadzod says: Aug 23, 2012 6:12 PM

We beat New England the first time 34-31, and the 2nd time, Week 17, blew a 21-0 lead and played the game without Stevie Johnson, as Chan Gailey was trying to make a point on attitudes. This was also played without Eric Wood and Freddy Jackson. We’re not scared of New England. Brady only has a few years left. As soon as he is gone, New England will be the cellar dwellers again. Let’s not mention the Bills own the All-Time record, DESPITE New England winning 20 of the last 22 games.

  40. gooseblack1987 says: Aug 23, 2012 7:08 PM

@gadzod first off the will never be relavent untill they fix that terrible defense. Secondly stevie johnson is garbage so its not a big loss when hes out of the Game. Thirdly just accept the bills will be in third place in the AFC east u guys had a good first few games but the real Bill team showed up in the 2nd half. And i understand fred jackson was injured but this is football every team plays with injuries the Packers won a super bowl with like ten ppl on IR so thats a lame excuse and noone is losing sleep over the bills defense cuz they sucked lol

  41. billsboy88 says: Aug 23, 2012 7:35 PM

Seriously, what was he supposed to say? “We gotta win the division but we’re gonna need a miracle to beat the pats, cuz quite frankly, that Tom Brady gives me nightmares.”

Nix is right, Buffalo often does “compete” with their competition by keeping games close, but they have a really hard time winning.

I once had a coach tell me that if you dont plan on winning every game, there is no point in playing it, cuz you already lost.

Get a clue. He’s hardly talking smack. What do you want him to say? “We’re okay, but we have no chance of beating the Patriots.” Why is it that all Pats fans seem like entitled, smug brats that get all bent out of shape when a division rival refuses to bend the knee to Belichick and company? I liked it better when the Boston teams were lovable losers because they are absolutely insufferable winners.

  43. mickeylolich1968 says: Aug 24, 2012 1:14 AM

It is nice to see the Bills getting some support.
It is true that some day there will be a football season which finds the Bills more successful than the Pats.
That season however, is not this season.
In the past ten or so years I think the Pats have appeared in the Super Bowl more often than they have lost a game to the Bills.
The Bills have a nice starting unit on defense and if every player can go the entire season in perfect health they may shock the world.
Naw, who am I kidding. Not enough depth. By the end of the season, when the Past are starting to really get serious, the Bills will be playing out the string, as usual.
And by the way, all those years the Pats were historically bad, (Yeah, we remember that, it seemed like it would never end) they had historically bad ownership. Thinks are better now. Bob Kraft really is the smartest guy in the room.

  44. dtjano says: Aug 24, 2012 7:25 AM

So the goal is to win the division and they’re not afraid of any team in the AFC? I think every GM in the NFL would say that.

Absolutely perfect response. Nix made no guarantee nor did he trash any part of the Patriot organization. He simply said that he believes winning the AFC is a realistic goal and it is.

  48. mc321984 says: Aug 24, 2012 5:09 PM

I love gooseblack’s “Thirdly” point. I guess the Bills should be resigned to “Thirdly” place in the AFC East before the season starts.
