Giants want Amukamara to show more “swag” on the field

Giants Jets Football AP

When the video of Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara being thrown into a cold tub first surfaced, Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reported that the Giants dunked him (eight times in total) because they wanted him to “develop more of an edge.”

The Giants denied that hazing had anything to do with it, claiming instead that it was an act of love despite people yelling at Amukamara to “stand up for himself” in the the video. That didn’t sound overly convincing at the time and it doesn’t sound any more convincing now that the Giants are going public with their campaign for a swaggier Amukamara.

Defensive end Justin Tuck said that the team wants to see Amukamara be “a little bit more swag.” Cornerback Corey Webster concurs and explains what the Giants are trying to do about it.

“You’ve got me and Terrell (Thomas), and we’re going to keep beating it into him,” Webster said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “And (safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips), those guys came from Miami and they had it there. So we’re going to keep on driving it in. He could use a little bit (of an edge) from us. He’s taking it in and he’s going to put it into his game. And I think it’s working for him.”

Not well enough to avoid a trip into the tub, it would seem.

It’s hard to argue with the need for a cornerback to play with supreme confidence in himself when he’s put out on an island against a receiver time and time again. He needs to be confident enough to stop him without any help and he needs to be arrogant enough to think he can do it even after he got beat on the previous play.

You can display that confidence quietly without losing any effectiveness, though. Swag conjures up images of Deion Sanders dancing his way down the field, an image that Amukamara certainly doesn’t fit. Neither do plenty of other cornerbacks who have played at a high level in the NFL, for that matter.

However Amukamara carries himself, the only thing that matters is how well he plays his role in the defense.

Is that when you clap your hands after you give up a big play?

How ’bout if he’s a good football player then let him be himself.

They make it sound as if having false, unearned bravado is a good thing.

Garcon is gonna burn whatever swag he has left. If he even had any to begin with.

If this isn’t bullying I don’t know what is.

Is this the type of example they want to be setting to young kids who look up to them as role models?

  4. eaglesw00t says: Aug 23, 2012 11:24 AM

Oh yeah, I want all of my db’s to have swagger like antrel rolle.

That guy doesn’t shut his mouth. You really want more players like him?

  5. hanspard says: Aug 23, 2012 11:26 AM

I wish the league had more guys like Nnamdi Asomugha. Great players who don’t have to do that “Miami U” style bullcrap. Bunch of preening dancing Nancies is all they are……

Don’t need swag to be a beast. Ask Eli.

  7. purpleguy says: Aug 23, 2012 11:40 AM

    But his name is Prince.

  8. canadianvikingfaniii says: Aug 23, 2012 11:43 AM

Some of this seems to be going too far, I hope this guy keeps mentally sound and stable. Sounds like they are still in high school, we have seen the effects of what bullying can do. Age is no factor, occurs at any age and consequences can be anything.

The Giants are FRESH off another super bowl win! I think the guys within their locker room know what it takes to win, and they know who the weak links are on their team. And it looks like they are addressing the weak links during camp. I saw the video and Prince needs to see the wizard, because his heart is missing!!

While I despise the word swag, I do think Prince needs a mean streak or an edge. Lots of players are nice guys off the field and can turn into a different type on the field. Nobody’s saying the guy has to be a jerk or a Prime-Time-level show off (though I acknowledge that may be what the word “swag” implies to some people), but he has to play with some kind of purpose.

The bottom line is that this is a meathead industry that’s going to resolve problems in a meathead fashion. If you’re not tough enough, we’ll harden you up and make you tough. I can’t say whether it’s right or wrong… But if you don’t like it, don’t play or watch football. And I guarantee some level of this behavior takes place in your favorite team’s locker room, too.

Maybe they should trade him to Denver, where there’s this quiet DB that does nothing but shut the other team’s best receiver down. Maybe he could learn that other kind of “swag” from Champ Bailey.

  12. emfsocial78 says: Aug 23, 2012 11:51 AM

Wow the Giants are the SB champs and are poised for another top year. But can’t get a sniff of coverage until you make a big deal out of 45 secs of video. Please. Every NFL player that’s commented on this video has told the media it’s nothing. Let it go!

On to Swag. Swag is not always displayed in an outward manner. So yes even Eli has plenty of swag inside it’s just displayed differently. The swag the team wants from Prince is just mearly that undying confidence in himself, no matter what happened the play before. Nnamdi has this as does every top CB no matter the outward display.

  13. mikelou111 says: Aug 23, 2012 12:05 PM

Be yourself, Prince, and let your play on the field do the talking. Ask your beast of a QB all about that.

  14. catfish252 says: Aug 23, 2012 12:06 PM

Swag this: Let the guy be himself — what, he isn’t acting the way you other players want him to act? Tough Sh–! and I certainly don’t want any Giant acting like Deion Sanders, he was/is an a$$hat. Leave Prince alone.

  15. chibimike says: Aug 23, 2012 12:11 PM

    Ridiculous situation.

When this kind of crap happens, the league’s legal monopoly and even the draft are open to being challenged in court. The player is stuck in a hostile situation with no option to leave.

  16. TurdSandwich says: Aug 23, 2012 12:14 PM

The word is “swagger”… Christ, the NFL has fines for players showing SWAG aka “Stuff We All Get” aka flair, adverts, promotional material etc.

  17. xlax1306 says: Aug 23, 2012 12:21 PM

“You’ve got me and Terrell (Thomas), and we’re going to keep beating it into him,”

Interesting choice of words given the anti-bullying outcry the video has caused.

  18. contract says: Aug 23, 2012 12:22 PM

Nothing gives a man a greater sense of confidence than being repeatedly bullied and humiliated.

What Prince Amukamara needs is the “swag” to dive into the back of JPP’s knee while he’s engaged with a blocker.

  19. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Aug 23, 2012 12:26 PM

If you want Prince to display more confidence, then stop dropping him in a tub full of water like a 2 year old for the entire locker room to see.

Coach Coughlin ordered a Code Red.

  21. gintfan says: Aug 23, 2012 1:12 PM

Soldiers, Firemen, Policemen, College and Professional Athletes all know what this is about. You are taking the field against an enemy; other Soldiers, Fire, Criminals and other Athletes so you want to know that the man to your left and right has got you covered.

Eli went through this too with Tiki and showed his swagger by letting Tiki know he wasn’t taking his crap. Eli put up with a lot from a lot of people, you just didn’t see it on a video.

This is nothing. If you choose one of these professions then you need to know it comes with the job.

  22. lionsplayoffs says: Aug 23, 2012 1:13 PM

Why didn’t they pick up on this huge personality difference in the pre-draft interviews? I get that not showing enough fire would annoy a team, but they had every chance to find out what makes him tick.

  23. ezwriter69 says: Aug 23, 2012 1:30 PM

I’ll take Herb Adderly, Willie Brown, Mel Blount, Champ Bailey, Mike Haynes and even Revis, but they apparently couldn’t play for the Giants, they’re not big enough bleepholes… so go out and get PacMan, DeAngelo Hall and Antrell Rolle, see how that works out for you. You may lead the league in return touchdowns, but also in touchdowns allowed and worst passes defensed ratio.
Bottom line is you have to be yourself, and the Giants need to back the bleep off this dude. For every Deion and Jack Tatum and Night Train Lane, there are the above mentioned guys. You don’t have to have a pimp walk to play DB.
Prince is a GENUINE Christian man, like Tom Coughlin. It’s not in him to be self-aggrandizing and disrespectful. That doesn’t mean he can’t play.

  24. kingcarlbanks says: Aug 23, 2012 1:38 PM

I can’t say I agree with the sentiment he needs more swag. I’m qiitr sure his confidence will grow with better play on the football field. Not ice cold baths.

  25. mintberrycrunch1 says: Aug 23, 2012 3:17 PM

I think Nnamdi, Woodson, and Bailey all proved you dont need to be a loudmouth swag filled idiot to be a lockdown corner.

That’s my sentiment. They’re just trying to stir something up, because they have NOTHING on Camp Coughlin. And instead of actually covering the campaign to repeat, they are looking to drum up a non-story. SO EXPECTED.

Didn’t he get tossed from his last college game for fighting? So that means he’s soft?

  28. gintfan says: Aug 23, 2012 5:45 PM

Say what you will about Antrell, Kenny and the rest but they are walking around with Superbowl rings. Revis, Bailey and Nnamdi don’t!! Stats or SB wins gentlemen, which would YOU prefer?

  29. stevenfbrackett says: Aug 23, 2012 7:00 PM

Hey, Giants, there is nothing wrong with being a low-key, low drama-loving guy. Nothing at all.

Does he do what he needs to do on the field? That is all that matters.

EXACTLY. Being quiet doesn’t make you more “classy” anyway. Revis is arrogant as hell (although I love the guy), and Champ is also.
