Bucs will break in Jordan Shipley tonight

Jordan Shipley AP

A week ago, Jordan Shipley lost his job a day after making no catches in a preseason game between the Falcons and Shipley’s Bengals.  Tonight, Shipley will be making his debut as a member of the Buccaneers.

Speeding Shipley’s process is the fact that Tampa’s offense is similar to Cincinnati’s.

I’m picking it up,” Shipley said, via Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.  “Most of the stuff we’ve installed, I think I’ve got it.”

Shipley, a third-round pick in 2010, also could be returning punts against the Patriots, giving Tampa a potentially more sure-handed alternative to Preston Parker.

“I did it all through high school, all through college,” Shipley said.  “I got to do some in my rookie year in the preseason, and I had a couple of good returns.  I really love it.”

Shipley needs to do something positive tonight.  Cuts are coming, and in one more week from now he could be caught in the scrum of players who are looking for their next NFL opportunity.

Preston Parker is so baffling. He is pretty sure-handed as a receiver, but you can count on him muffing a punt about one out of every three tries.

I think the AFC North already broke Jordan.

So he muffs every third punt – he must be sure-handed!

Here’s the thing, Maximus929, what professor is posting is accurate. Research the numbers, Preston Parker was one of the best receivers in the slot last season, especially when it came to converting on third down. But when it comes to fielding a punt – watch out, because the guy drops punts. It’s baffling and hopefully something he can fix.

As for Shipley, liked the guy coming out of college and hope he sticks, tonight is the first step, hope he does well.

If he gets cut because he’s got nothing to give, he could still become the Jet’s second best receiver.

Break is the key word. If the Bucs make Shipley run routes and return punts on his shaky knee. his TB career will be short. If they are putting him out so soon, the rest of their WR corps must be a real source of concern.

I think Schiano is sick and tired of Rejus Benn’s ineptitude and wants an excuse to cut Dom’s other horrible 2010 2nd round pick.

Idk, he looked good in his first year, but that injury….

Just two years ago Shipley lead the AFC rookies with most catches. Hope he can catch on in Tampa. Big fan favorite here in Cincy, everyone sad to see him go. Good luck, Ship.
