Lions quarterback Kellen Moore has a clear shot to the Lions third quarterback job.

Now he just has to wait to see if they think he makes it worth keeping three.

When the Lions released quarterback R.J. Archer, it left Moore as the only one left behind starter Matt Stafford and backup Shaun Hill.

Despite early struggles that made it clear he had an uphill battle, the undrafted rookie from Boise State is starting to impress coaches more.

“He adapts very quickly,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said, via Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. “I think you saw improvement from him from (preseason) game one to game two. He needs to stay on that same path. He’s worked with receivers. You see his timing and things like that.

“He just is more comfortable with receivers that he’s with. It’s tough when you’re a third quarterback in camp and there’s 90 guys because you’re generally throwing to different guys all the time. He’s starting to get into a little bit of rhythm.”

After his disastrous opener, he was 10-of-15 for 96 yards against Baltimore. That’s better, but his preseason passer rating is 47.5, the kind of number you could pull someone off the street and achieve.

The Lions might want to keep him around, but they could probably stash him on the practice squad without much danger of losing him, opening a roster spot for someone who might contribute.
