The Giants lost cornerback Terrell Thomas for an indefinite period when he suffered a “stretched” and “aggravated” right ACL injury in late July. They’ve turned to 2011 first-round pick Prince Amukamara to replace Thomas.

The G-Men got bad news in Friday night’s preseason game against the Bears when Amukamara suffered a first-quarter ankle injury and had to be carted off the field. The injury appeared to be to Amukamara’s right ankle. The Giants immediately took him to the X-ray room.

Chicago’s offense subsequently attacked Amukamara’s side of the field, as quarterback Jay Cutler connected with wide receiver Brandon Marshall on a touchdown pass in replacement cornerback Bruce Johnson’s coverage.

Amukamara figures to undergo further tests to determine the extent of the injury in the coming hours and days. But the reigning Super Bowl champs can’t afford to lose him for an extended period of time.
