Giants coach Tom Coughlin told the CBS broadcast crew that cornerback Prince Amukamara suffered an “ankle sprain” in Friday night’s preseason game against the Bears.

CBS later reported, however, that Amukamara has the dreaded high ankle sprain. It’s an injury that could shelve him for a month or longer. The ailment is to Amukamara’s right leg. X-rays were negative, but they only tested for a fracture.

Amukamara was carted off the field in the first quarter, and did not return. He was replaced by Bruce Johnson.

With usual first-teamer Terrell Thomas (knee) out indefinitely, the Giants are running low on cornerbacks for the second consecutive preseason.

In fairness, they wound up doing okay after facing the same predicament last year.
