Matthew Stafford out with a left hand injury

Matthew Stafford AP

The Lions were hoping to get a half out of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford on Saturday night, but they will have to settle for a bit more than a quarter.

Shaun Hill has replaced Stafford in the second quarter of their game against the Raiders after Stafford had to leave the game with a left hand injury. Stafford appeared to hit the hand on a helmet when Raiders defensive end Dave Tollefson hit him to force a third down incompletion.

The Lions are calling his return questionable, although you can downgrade Stafford to out if you’re keeping your own injury list at home. Stafford won’t be back after halftime and the Lions aren’t going to push their quarterback back into the game with any chance of making whatever’s wrong with his non-throwing hand any worse than it already is.

Stafford was 8-of-10 for 68 yards in the game. Calvin Johnson didn’t have any catches while Stafford was in the game, although it’s not clear if that was because of Ron Bartell’s coverage or if the Lions were looking to see what others could do in their third preseason contest.

    Hope he is OK.

Hate to see any starting QB go down.

Last year the Lions operated out of the shotgun more than any team in NFL History (67%) this should be a non issue heading into the regular season.

How many games have ever been played in the history of football? That’s how many games in a row someone has hurt someone. But hey, Raiders fans, take whatever self made victories you can get, I guess.

Yet sanchez is called soft. Sanchize may not be as good but doesnt get injured as much

You know you’ve made it when you nick a finger on your non-throwing hand and are sat down for precautionary reasons in a preseason game…..and it’s headline news with plenty of people loving to hate!

  9. spellingcops says: Aug 25, 2012 8:30 PM

Yeah, hurting people, that’s something to be proud of. Typical Raider degenerate. Commitment to excrement.

  10. rmc1995 says: Aug 25, 2012 8:31 PM

Stafford played witb a broken throwing hand last year and threw for 5000 yards. He’s not soft.

Mr. Glass is back. I was amazed when he made it through a full season last year.

Do you remember Stafford coming back into the game to throw a winning touchdown with a dislocated shoulder his rookie year? Because I do. Stafford is in no ways “soft,” this is a preseason game, if it was regular season I have no doubts he would be back out there.

Stafford is okay, if it a real regular season game he’d obviously be in there playing. But he’s already proven himself last year so we don’t need to see anything more from him. I’m more worried about bill Bentley and Chris Houstons injuries.

  15. rashardmendenballs says: Aug 25, 2012 8:41 PM

Stafford is fine; he must likely bruised his non throwing hand. Lions not taking any chances tonight by shutting him down for the rest of the game. If this was a regular season game, he would have been back out there the next drive.

Overall, this is a non issue.

  16. kinggeorgexii says: Aug 25, 2012 8:50 PM

nothing new for stafford. injury prone.

  17. sgtdiver says: Aug 25, 2012 8:50 PM

he got his hand caught between two helmets. it was iced down and he would have easily played had it been a regular season game. This is really a non story

  18. gettingpwned says: Aug 25, 2012 8:50 PM

sanchez is called soft because he sees the rush coming and is afraid to get hit. then again, his O line doesnt really help him much. nevertheless, sanchize doesnt like being hit. and that is why he’s called soft.

Lions are in for a reality check this year, they wont be sneaking up on anyone this year. i predict their record is the reverse from last year. Cant wait to see harbaugh knock the hell out of baby boy analschwarts

  22. funktron2x says: Aug 25, 2012 8:57 PM

sanchize never gets hurt because he plays like a scared girl. Stafford takes hits because he knows that’s what you have to do as an nfl qb. Regardless, this is his non-throwing hand. he’s fine

  23. bensstinkyfingers says: Aug 25, 2012 9:42 PM

one of these days Goodell is going to figure out that playing 4 preseson games is too much. teams are loosing starters left and right for glorified practices that mean nothing. Playing 1 regional preseson game is enough, then add 2 regular season games, that would make everyone happy.

  24. 4ever85 (aka Butch DeadLift) says: Aug 25, 2012 10:13 PM

As long as fans keep selling out pre-season games and TV ratings for them remain high, Goodell isn’t get rid of them.

He won’t even throw a few nickles to the refs. No way he just turns down free millions.

bh49ers-your coach is a total joke. any objective football fan will tell you that he pretty much epitomizes the word jerk.
You and the rest of you bay area freaks will be the unhappy ones when week 2 is over.
Plus let’s not forget Green Bay is going to serve you in week 1.
You guys are in for a rough year.

no mention of the raiders defense and how they did shut megatron out. 3rd and goal from the 1 and 2 passes to megatron later and 0 points for the lions and the raiders defense handed the ball back to their offense
raiders defense may just surprise a few people this year

Easy killer, not all Raider fans are into blood and guts. I for one do not relish the fact that players get hurt. I also do not condon that players intentionally injure opposing team players.

Yes, there are the few dumbazz fans that think different, fk them.

  33. funktron2x says: Aug 26, 2012 2:31 AM

Actually, I like this scenario better: San Fran beats GB, and then all the 49er fans get way too pumped up before the Lions go in and deflate them like so many old balloons. :-) Let’s do that, ‘Mkay?

  35. datdangdrewdundunituhgin says: Aug 26, 2012 2:45 AM

i don’t think sanchez is soft. he just really sucks. stafford will be fine, and i wouldn’t about calvin’s draft stock. the lions defense is going to be pretty bad again, which forces detroit to air it out. even when healthy, their DB’s are average at best, and their depth is borderline pathetic.

Goodell has been said that he wants to convert 2 preseason games into 2 more regular season games.

But as far as making everyone happy there are plenty of people who don’t want to see extra games added, and all these players lawsuits for concussions make it less likely that there will ever be a 18 game season.

The 49ers are not the same team as last year bro. we had many meaningfull free agent signings in moss, manningham, jacobs etc…..not to mention an excellent draft. 49ers know what they are doin (5 superbowl rings to detriots….um zero rings) so before you run your mouth look at what your team has done in the past…..NOTHING
