Ravens rookie fined more than 15K for hit on Shaun Hill

AP

The schedule says it’s the preseason, but the folks who levy fines against NFL players already are in midseason form.

Ravens rookie linebacker Nigel Carr will fork over $15,750 for roughing the passer during the August 17 preseason game against the Lions, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

Carr hit Detroit reserve quarterback Shaun Hill in the head-neck area.

As MDS recently explained in connection with the fine imposed against Cardinals defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin, Carr may appeal the fine because it exceeds 25 percent of his weekly pay.  (With a first-year minimum of $390,000, Carr would get $22,941 per week, if he makes the team.)

And that’s one of the main reasons why fines should be based on a percentage of the offending player’s salary or cap number.  The more a guy makes, the less of a deterrent the fine becomes.

  1. After the illegal hit, Ray Lewis jumped in a limo and sped off. He later told the authorities that he didn’t see anything, despite eyewitnesses claims that he was right in the middle of the action.

Cheap shot team. Enjoy the basement that is the AFC North!

Are you a dumbass or what? You’re obviously a Steeler fan but at least try to make some sense. The Ravens are a top level team as are the Steelers. The Browns will be in the basement again this year but AFC North is still capable of putting 3 teams into the playoffs this year!

  3. Cheap shot team. Enjoy the basement that is the AFC North!

Are you serious chump? Whiner Ward is longer there but he was the direst dog in the NFL for a long time as he tried to take out knees, now James Harrison will continue with his cheap shots.

Squealers are getting significantly worse, the same can’t be said for Baltimore. Loved watching Pittsburgh get Tebowed by a really bad team that has and still has glaring holes.

  4. The fine structure has to change to a percentage as stated. Salary disparity is too big for flat amounts.

  5. Tickets should be based on your income as well, like they do in Sweden. Richard Branson had a speeding ticket for a couple hundred grand lol

  6. There is a lot of smack talk on here from fans who’s team got swept last year, has the dirtiest player in the NFL on their team, and a rapist for a quarterback!

  7. Wow such hate on the ravens…yeah the ravens teach this, that’s why the league distributed video of a clean hard hit and it was of ray Lewis hitting dustin keller

    This team is irrelevant…

    —————

Just as the AFC Championship game was irrelevant to the Steelers, as they watched it from their comfy couches after Tim Effing Tebow lit you up and sent you home.

  9. this guy already fits in well with the other linebackers, one who killed a few , one who throws bleach at ladies…great role models in that hell hole of Baltimore

  10. There’s nothing I love more than laughing at the expense of morons who show absolute ignorance to the concept of irony. All I have heard in the past is how classless the Ravens were in “running up the score” week 1 of last year, and how moronic they looked handing out a Gatorade bath mid-season. Yet on every single Raven-related article, it seems like the first comment (or in this article’s case 3 of the first 4) is always some moronic, classless statement from s ome Steeler troll with nothing better to do in their sad lives. Obsess much? Keep the laughs coming guys!

  11. “And that’s one of the main reasons why fines should be based on a percentage of the offending player’s salary or cap number. The more a guy makes, the less of a deterrent the fine becomes.”

What a Socialist way of thinking. Should we do the same with traffic violations? Parking tickets? Yes? Then how about income taxes?

  12. So what you’re saying is “The diabolical people making decisions for the NFL are in mid season form”.. And Calvin Johnson is the next Buddha”.. We get it..

  13. Of course the first comment was.from a steeler fan, we have to deal with trolls like ravenator on steelers articles. Hypocrites. Oh and if you are going to try and insult someone, the least you could do is learn how to spell. Idiots. Of course living in baltimore for 8 years. I dont know why im expecting anything more. Go Steelers!

  14. Steeler fans stop it. We are talking about a rookie that won’t even make the team. Your players are the dirtiest in the NFL. I.e. Hines Ward James Harrison… C’mon are you serious?!? And don’t try and talk smack about Baltimore. It’s head and shoulders a better town than Pittsburgh.

  15. PFT is beating the wrong drum here on the NFL applying a flat % of salary or cap fines. That would allow ALL kinds of manipulation by shrewd agents and teams. Consider, annual salary (and salary cap charge) is often unrelated to how much a player actually earns. So a veteran signing a fat new contract will +$10M in cash compensation. But the structure will look something like a $9.5M bonus and a $500k annual salary. Well if a fine is based on % of salary, that highly compensated player will have their fine reduced automatically–simply due to the structure of the contract. And even if its a % of their salary cap charge, we know how that can be manipulated. So what the appeal process does is allow the NFL to judge the circumstance independently. If a low level roster guy truly only makes $500k, they’ll likely get their fine reduced based on that % of salary calculation. But if a high paid player appeals, assuming the NFL takes into account their massive bonus, the NFL likely rejects the appeal and does NOT reduce the fine. So keeping that appeal process in place, allows the NFL to adjust the fines for lower paid players, and not allow the higher paid players with shrewd agents to essentially get their fines reduced purely due to contract structure. Allows the NFL to judge the merits of a fine reduction on a case by case basis. And then just fine a flat amount to everyone, and then reduce accordingly based on the particular financial situation of a given player. This actually is a MORE reasonable approach, imho, than using some kind of formulaic approach to fines that can ultimately be “gamed” and manipulated.

  16. Ray Lewis.? Isn’t that old BS about 10 years old now. Don’t you Burgh boys have anything new? Pittsburgh a better city than Baltimore. Dude you have been breathing coal dust too long. Most Pittsburgh fans can’t even spell Pittsberg. And Csilo Baltimore is spelled with a B not a b. Always love the morons that mention spelling then misspell words. Burgh boys still wear their football jersys to the hockey games since they don’t know any different. Swept by Baltimore, kicked by Teebow, and they still open their mouths as if they know what they are talking about. I drove through Pittsburgh once. Took me a week to get the smell off of me. Trying winning a few games this century Burgh boys and quit living in Bradshaws jock. You haven’t done anything since he left

  17. I think if he doesn’t make the team (which I don’t anticipate that he will) the fine should be dropped. I don’t really know how pay works in preaseason but I don’t imagine he’s made much more than that all training camp, so you can’t just strip a guy’s earnings for 4 weeks work for a late hit.
