I’ll never understand why artificial turf of *all* stripes wasn’t abandoned over a decade ago. It never works as well as grass, the players hate it, and it causes more injuries. Best of luck to DeCastro on a full and speedy recovery! We need him on the O-line, there’s no way around it.

He did come out of school a year early. I think less of a chance of his development being affected by missing this year. Than him losing confidence by having a bunch of full grown old veteran DL schooling him week after week. with polished tricks of the trade. I’m sure his upper body will be even stronger next year. Added with a year of Pro schooling.

I just pray his knee surgery goes well. If not, all else is moot.

Successful surgery on knee? All else will work itself out.

With all the money invested in players you’d think the last thing owners would do is install a turf that makes their multi-million dollar investments injury-prone. But who says the owners do any thinking?

frankiefiveangels: DeCastro is a football player who was injured playing football. I don’t see the difference if a player is injured in August or in September.
This might actually be a blessing in disguise, short-term, for the Steelers. DeCastro is rookie who no doubt was going to struggle on an O-line that was about to unleash a lot of inexperience and youth. DeCastro will now be replaced by a veteran.
Long-term, this may stunt DeCastro’s development. But such is life in the NFL.
Preseason games are an evil neccessity. How else are coaches suppose to evaluate talent, especially those players on the “bubble”?
What’s criminal is owners charging full price to witness these over-hyped snoozefests.

Thats why football should be played on grass and only grass. Well mud, puddles, and snow are just as good. They already tried an indoor, turf league. pay up owners and keep this game on grass. We are already going to lose the contact one day.

Really happy this wasn’t an “unhappy triad” injury which consists of a torn ACL, torn MCL and torn medial meniscus. These sorts of injuries CAN be career-threatening.

This news is UNBELIEVABLY good especially if the ACL truly has been spared. I look for him to be ready to rock n’ roll for spring training camp and have an incredible “rookie” 2013 campaign.

I’m a Pats fan and don’t really care about Steeler issues but I hate that DeCastro, and others, got hurt in a preseason game. I’m not sure how much the owners pocket in preseason but is it really worth the added sunk costs of lost player salary, signing bonuses, health insurance, MRI’s, lawyers fees, doctors visits and every other cost specifically related to preseason games? Just asking.
