Panthers cut Olindo Mare

A year after signing in Carolina, Olindo Mare is leaving.

The Panthers have released Mare today, a league source tells PFT.

Shortly after last year’s lockout ended, Mare signed a four-year, $12 million contract with the Panthers. But he had a mediocre season in Carolina in 2011, missing both of his field goal attempts of 50-plus yards.

The Panthers have also cut veteran punter Nick Harris in favor of rookie Brad Nortman, whom they selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft.

The decision to cut Mare leaves Justin Medlock as the only kicker on the Panthers’ roster. It’s not known yet whether the Panthers have settled on Medlock as their kicker for Week One, or whether they’ll consider bringing in another kicker. But their kicker won’t be Mare.

Sign Josh Brown or Billy Cundiff.

Panthers will pick up John Kasey after the Saints cut him.

22/28 with a long of 45. We would pass up 50 yarders to punt instead, gaining a net of 12 yards in the end because he was so bad. What doesn’t make any sense is he was 2nd in the league in touch-back percentage… but he couldn’t kick it 50 yards.

Thank you. It’s about time. No matter how well he could have played, everybody knows that he would blow it when the time came to win when it mattered..

    Billy Cundiff?

Not a Panthers fan, but I live in east tennessee so I get to see plenty of their games. Mare was never “great” in Seattle and he was arguably worse in Carolina. Billy Cundiff could be a better option, though as a Ravens fan, that’s definitely debatable..just glad the Ravens now have a kicker with a howitzer for a leg and the laser-guided accuracy to go with it.

Great! This guy cost us at least two games last year by missing chip shot field goals.

    Kicker Schmicker

He missed that 35 yarder with time expiring giving the vikings a win and making us lose out on RG3, thanks olindo you jerk.

    Medlock will be the kicker.

The Bucs have 2 young kickers who can easily and routinely make 50+ yarders. They’ll have to cut one and the Panthers will probably swoop in and make them pay.

All us fans here in Carolina knew last year that the correct move was not to cut Kasay, but to cut Jason Baker, who was worse at punting than even Kasay was at kicking off. We’re keeping Brad Nortman from Wisconsin to punt. If we don’t keep Justin Medlock, we would be well-served to re-sign Kasay. I suspect we’re going to keep Medlock. He looked fine in preseason.

    Long Ding is available!

I was excited to get him last year. However, as the season unfolded you quickly realized he wasn’t a clutch kicker. Let’s get a guy whos clutch

Panthers fans please don’t start the billy cundiff stuff. He’s mare 2.0. Missed a short kick to go to the super bowl. We don’t want him. Please guys. Please!

Mare lost two games for the Panthers last year because of missed kicks. One long and one short. One of the fanchises worse decisions was cutting Kasey. Here’s hoping the Siants do cut Kasey and the Panters can correct their mistake and bring Kasey back. Simply put, Kasey is money (except when he kicks off during the last two minutes of Super Bowls).

I think Ryan Longwell is still a free agent. He’s accurate, one of the most accurate kickers, he just won’t kick you touchbacks.

In 1996, the battle for the Kicking job in Miami was between two rookies, Olindo Mare and Joe Nedney.

    Jimmy Johnson picked Mare.

    Was Jimmy right?

Medlock is a great young leg. Kicked in the CFL for the Hamilton Tiger Cats last year and was clutch in more than a few games.

    Add Rackers to the list…..

  23. slammincamnewton says: Aug 27, 2012 4:49 PM

They don’t plan on bringing in anyone else. It was a battle between Mare and Medlock. Mare didn’t necessarily lose the battle as much as Medlock beat him. Medlock is our kicker, and we cut a ton of payroll when we cut Mare. Dude was making 3-4 mil a year to be a kicker, was a joke of a signing to begin with.

I like Medlock as a FG kicker, but the problem is that he can’t get touchbacks. Everyone knows that cutting Kasay was a bad mistake. At least now they have made the move to correct that error. I feel certain that we will pick up a veteran who has been cut and can do both jobs. Otherwise, they would have kept Mare for kickoffs and had 2 kickers. Rivera wants 1 man for both jobs.

Get into the endzone and you don’t have to worry about the kicker!

Jeff Reed is local and available.
