The Eagles have made their choice at punter.

Mat McBriar has been released by the Eagles, according to Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com, leaving Chas Henry as the only punter on the roster in Philadelphia.

McBriar, a former Australian rules football player, had played his entire eight-year NFL career with the Cowboys before signing with Philadelphia this offseason. He’ll now become an unrestricted free agent and may still have time to make a punter-needy team.

Henry signed with the Eagles last year as an undrafted free agent out of Florida and averaged 42.9 yards a punt.

  1. Many eagles fans, including myself thought McBriar would win the job when he signed. Henry clearly outplayed him this preseason, with both showing around the same punting power but Henry has shown he can pin the other team within the 20 yard line while McBriar booms it into the end zone.

  2. I was reading a Philly article today–they said that McBriar isn’t totally healed from his surgery in the offseason and he still had a pronounced limp when he walked. That leaves the Eagles roster at 74–they’re either getting ready to sign someone–paging Mr Cooley at TE, or they’re getting a head start on cutting the roster to 53.

  3. There are several teams out there that need an upgrade at Punter, I’m sure he will land on his feet. Philly fans have their new Punter that will probably finish out his career there, he is pretty damn good at his job.

  4. Henry was TERRIBLE last year and if I’m not mistaken(I don’t feel lie looking it up right now) I believe I read somewhere that he actually ranked last or second-to-last in the NFL among all punters last season in punt avg. When will we stop signing rugby players and actually use a real punter?!?!
