If Jaguars owner Shad Khan angered his best player by taking public shots at Maurice Jones-Drew’s holdout, he doesn’t care.
Khan said today that when he said the “train is leaving the station” without Jones-Drew, he was just giving his candid opinion of the situation.
“I want to be honest and truthful,” Khan said, via Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union. “I have absolutely no regrets.”
It’s looking increasingly likely that Jones-Drew’s holdout could continue into the regular season. Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey has declared Rashad Jennings the starter for Week One against the Vikings, and Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith said today that the Jaguars are not considering trading Jones-Drew.
It says a lot about the declining importance of the running back position in the NFL that other teams don’t appear to be clamoring to get Smith to consider trading Jones-Drew. The NFL’s reigning rushing leader is a player who’s probably going to be stuck playing for a team he’s butting heads with, and for a salary he doesn’t like.
