King picks Packers over Broncos in Super Bowl XLVII

Denver Broncos v Chicago Bears Getty Images

As we nudge closer to making our picks for Super Bowl XLVII, dreading the requirement of selecting one out of 16 teams in each conference, we’re taking into account the predictions of those whose deadlines were earlier than ours.

Peter King’s deadline for the Sports Illustrated NFL preview issue has come and gone, and Peter has picked the Packers to beat the Broncos in New Orleans when the season culminates in February.

It’s not a bad choice.  It assumes, of course, that Peyton Manning will be Peyton Manning again.  And Peter thinks that will happen, as evidenced by the fact that he thinks Peyton will be the MVP again, for a fifth time.

We’ll unveil our own picks on Tuesday, at which time you can complain about them in the comments.  Until then, complain about King’s.

Yeah, because we all know Peyton’s a great playoff quarterback. Peyton might lead the Broncos to a playoff spot, hell even the running back Tebow was able to do that. But the Broncos don’t have the defense to get them further than the 1st round.

  2. voiceofreasonsays says: Aug 29, 2012 8:24 PM

He meant to say Redskins over Broncos.

  3. jomochiefsfan84 says: Aug 29, 2012 8:27 PM

Idk have any clue on how all these people think the broncos are going to the super bowl I will admit I think they will be good but not good enough to win the bowl. Manning has less weapons to work with than he ever has there’s no way it’s gonna happen.

  4. grabgrabgrab says: Aug 29, 2012 8:28 PM

I agree with the Packer pick, but I’m quite unsure who will represent the AFC. It won’t matter.

  5. kanishj says: Aug 29, 2012 8:29 PM

LMAO!!!! Here we go folks. Here we go!!! Let the newly energized Peyton Manning knob-slurping begin!!!! For craps sake Peter, why do you have to be so predictable??

  6. contrarianjon says: Aug 29, 2012 8:29 PM

    Makes complete sense to me

  7. huskersrock1 says: Aug 29, 2012 8:32 PM

At least he is climbing out on a limb with his pick. Florios pick will be Green Bay over New England.

  8. mrfoozball says: Aug 29, 2012 8:32 PM

Broncos? Really? This King dude is over his head at SI. Everything I’ve read from him is absolute gibberish.

  9. beelicker says: Aug 29, 2012 8:38 PM

Pierre here is trying to continue his impressive display of preseason SB prognosticating prowess on the heels of last year’s classic Falcons over Chargers … it could happen!

  10. hansenbrothers says: Aug 29, 2012 8:38 PM

It’s interesting to read now, but it’s more interesting to read & the end of the season, & laugh at what seems perfectly logical right now.

Peter King is a tool. Not only that, he is never right

  12. wtfchiefs says: Aug 29, 2012 8:41 PM

Yeah, good luck with that Bronco defense.

  15. ppc50 says: Aug 29, 2012 8:44 PM

King is such a kiss butt to the Manning family. Manning’s playoff record is 9 wins in 19 games, he won his 1 SB vs. Rex Grossman and threw the losing INT vs. the Saints, as well as playing fairly poorly in both SB games. His numbers in the playoffs are not stellar as well. There is no way that Denver will make it to the Super Bowl. Great fans and a supportive city, but King is way off.

  16. jasons81 says: Aug 29, 2012 8:51 PM

This confirms it… Peter King is retarded

    AFC will be either:

    Patriots
    Texans
    Steelers
    Ravens
    Broncos
    Chargers

    Pick one.

Could make an argument for Titans, Bengals, and Jets.

Only idiots would think the Chiefs, Raiders, Browns, Jaguars, Colts, Bills, or Dolphins have a chance.

  21. labratre says: Aug 29, 2012 9:09 PM

Packers will not make it to the Superbowl this year. Their division is a lot better. Just think about the end of their last season. They won’t make it. How about we all just sit back, enjoy the season, enough of the hoping and guessing, it’s a bunch of crap if u ask me.

  22. rajbais says: Aug 29, 2012 9:14 PM

He’ll be wrong (like most Super Bowls)!!!!

I’m sorry, but there are good defenders on those two teams; there aren’t sound and near-complete defenses!!!

He was better off picking the Texans and 49ers because I am.

Since 2003, my correct Super Bowl champions were Green Bay, Pittsburgh in 2008, and New England in 2003 and my correct Super Bowl contestants included Philly, Carolina, and Seattle.

He goes too much on the quarterback. E doesn’t pick teams with capable pass rushers.

    bleh

  24. sfsaintsfan says: Aug 29, 2012 9:15 PM

Broncos have a better chance of making it to the Super Bowl than the Packers anyway. Packers will be one and done in the playoffs once again. They might not even win their own division. Detroit will be an improved team and the Bears will be right there with them. One more hit to the soft head of their QB and the Packers will be wishing they had kept Flynn. Niners will knock Aaron out for the season…..

  25. rajbais says: Aug 29, 2012 9:15 PM

He was better off picking the 49ers vs. Texans and the Texans win it.

    I am.

I assume you were joking, but ironically 1995 was the last time PK correctly predicted a super bowl. He picked the Niners over the Chargers. He’s just been in a slump…a 17 year slump.

  33. contra74 says: Aug 29, 2012 9:31 PM

Packers? Really? They were badly exposed last year. Just disrupt the receivers routes and the timing is off leaving Rodgers looking like a concussion magnet.

  34. jimmysee says: Aug 29, 2012 9:35 PM

I’m a Packers fan and stockholder — sold hot dogs at Packers games in the miod-60’s –but I’ve got doubts about the season —

The NFC North has gotten stronger — so those games will all be tough (maybe even the miserable Vikings).

Without those games as gimmees, the chances of the Packers wrapping up home field advantage are in doubt.

So that may mean heading to S.F. or N.J. for the NFC Championship game (if they make it that far) — not an easy task.

    Go Pack Go!

    Not taking anything for granted.

The league’s too tough. And the division is too tough.

  35. themanchine says: Aug 29, 2012 9:36 PM

King also said Bruce Irvin was a 3rd pick of the Seahawks and would win DefROY…..that issue of SI should have come wrapped around a jar Morton’s.

Peter King is smooth off his rocker. Picking the broncos to the super bowl is gross. Go eat more popcorn with Jerry, Pete.

  37. fernjag says: Aug 29, 2012 9:42 PM

Peter, put down the crack pipe. Heck, why don’t you go for the Manning vs Manning spin, while your’e down there.

  38. gloryfromheaven says: Aug 29, 2012 9:43 PM

Do people actually believe picking Denver to go to the Super Bowl is a joke? So what do you guys think? Packers over Patriots? Giants over Ravens? 49ers over Texans? Every year there’s a surprise but for some reason you people think only the best teams from the year before will make it to the Super Bowl. The Broncos improved BIG TIME, not just by adding Peyton Manning but added alot of pieces on the defensive side as well… this is a good prediction

  39. packhawk04 says: Aug 29, 2012 9:53 PM

  40. johnnyjagfan says: Aug 29, 2012 9:55 PM

Broncos will be in semi-finals. Brady can still take him, especially with 3 fast TE’s working the defense. I hate it, but the Pats are about to redefine offense. If they had Megatron, it’d be 19-0 with a 10+ point margin of victory.

  41. sea3369 says: Aug 29, 2012 9:55 PM

    ———————————————–

Fun fact, Manning’s playoff stats are better than Brady, Aikman, Bradshaw, Elway and a host of more QB’s. Yet Manning has only 1 SB compared to their 12. My point being that while QB play is important in the SB, it is not the ultimate deciding factor. He didn’t play poorly in all 10 losses. Denver is the first team with a legitimate defense and run game he will have since 2005/2006. Before and after those seasons he never had the combination of a run game/defense like Denver has.

Gonna have to disagree with you there, it does matter how good or bad your defense is as long as your offense is good. The giants ranked 27th, patriots 31th, I guess they shouldn’t have been in the SB. The broncos ranked 20th last year and with a few upgrades and del rio, they should rank higher. Any fan are gonna think that their teams are gonna win the SB, hell cardinal fans think their team has a shot. Doesn’t matter how many wins you have in the regular season, its all about whose hot in the playoffs. Im a hugh broncos fan, do I believe they have a chance at making it to the superbowl? Yes! Will they win the SB this year? I hope so but im not gonna say that bringing manning in is a automatic SB appearance/win, its a team effort not college style where you get voted in without competing.

I have been a Bronco fan since I was seven years old in 1977 whereupon I watched them get thumped by the Cowboys; been drinking the orange cool-aid for a long time. However, is this the same guy at SI who picked the Chargers last year with Phil Rivers to be the league MVP? The Broncos D, with a patchwork D-Line and a bunch of linebackers who cannot tackle, will be visiting New Orleans for Fat Tuesday in February well after the Patriots/Ravens and Packers PLAY in the Bug Easy! Way too many shootouts coming the Mile High way this winter…….

I’d love to have whatever King Peter is smoking because the Broncos are not making the Superbowl. No way. No how. Not with a rookie coach and an old broken down QB.

Not by any means a Bronco hater. Just don’t see that one happening. The Bungles have a better shot at the SB than the Broncos.

  61. ppdoc13 says: Aug 30, 2012 12:33 AM

My mistake. Didn’t mean rookie HC. I like Fox as a head coach. I just don’t see that team making it unless they come up with the best record in the AFC, then all bets are off.

  65. zinn22 says: Aug 30, 2012 1:06 AM

Mannings value was show in 2011 when he did not play for the Colts. The team went from a SB contender to the worst team in the league all because he was not there.

Manning has single handily made a very bad Colts teams a perennial SB contender. The question is can he do the same with a much better Broncos team. I watched the 49ers game and while his stats looked good I thought his arm strength looked lacking. I think he will have problems with out passes and deep passes and having the velocity to fit balls into small areas. But that is not everything.

What separates Manning from other QBs is his ability to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage. There is no one better. Is that enough? With the Broncos pass rush and defense it is likely more than enough to make the playoffs and a run in the playoffs. Although manning fan beware as the Broncos play a murders row opening schedule. It would not be surprising to see them get off to a very bad start.

I hope the guy makes it. He is a class act and a hard worker. The commercials may get annoying but he just comes off as a good guy. 4 good years and he will break all the major NFL passing records. But he needs a couple more SBs to be considered the best QB of all time.

  66. jjbadd385 says: Aug 30, 2012 1:13 AM

I’m a Broncos fan from way back, but our secondary was weak last year, & if it doesn’t improve this yr, we in trouble! It’s possible that they go to SB, stranger things have happened. But I am in awe at what I think the Pats might do. And just outta curiosity, why is everyone doubting the Packers, they have a great team, & I can’t stand them!

  67. weakafceast says: Aug 30, 2012 1:13 AM

It’s Which teams stay the healthiest, Would anyone pick the Packers if Rogers went down for the year? Or Manning and the Broncos I understand NFL publications need to say something! But it’s a guess at best!

  69. alskdh says: Aug 30, 2012 1:29 AM

We all know Peyton a year back from neck surgery, is just gong to blow by Tom, the greatest modern TE duo, a revamped receiving corps, and a defense supplemented by 6 draft picks too..

  70. lanman11 says: Aug 30, 2012 1:32 AM

All Manning has to do is have a good year and make it to the second round of the playoffs and he’ll be automatically crowned MVP for the umpteenth time, not because he is the MVP, but because the media wants him to be the MVP. Any objective person has to admit that Tom Brady has been the MVP for ten years. Like him or not (and I have no clue how you could not – objectively – like this guy) nobody is close to the run Brady has put together, and he’s not done. BTW, at least one of Mannings MVP’s (earlier in the last decade) was a total rook job on Brady. Manning got MVP as a consolation prize because everyone felt sorry for him because he couldn’t get to, let alone win a Super Bowl, and Brady was handing him his azz.

The Texans will be a problem, and Baltimore could be there (though I think they will regress), but I just don’t see anyone with the experience, talent, and resolve to unseat New England in the AFC.

The NFC East and North will be too tough for the division winners to grab home field from San Fran. With GB being shaky on D, and the QB concussion issues, I’m not sure they will be there in the end. San Fran looked to be handling the Giants last year until a pair of gift wrapped fumbles put the Gmen in the SB. Not to say the Gmen can’t do it again, but San Fran’s D and an improved O, playing at home, should get them to the big game.

That should be a good close game. I would go against the grain and favor New England to win it.

    .

  71. lanman11 says: Aug 30, 2012 1:37 AM

BTW, the reason Denver was King’s pick is that they are one of the only teams that may have improved enough at the QB position to not only break into the group of playoff teams from last year, but that could conceivably make a run. It was a no brainer pick. Everything else would be predictable.

On a side note: The Eagles and Cowgirls may not be getting enough respect due to their well publicized failures in the past. One of them may surprise. More likely the Eagles, especially in light of the passing of the coaches son. Stuff like that tends to galvanize teams.

  72. edge661 says: Aug 30, 2012 2:33 AM

  77. theandy59 says: Aug 30, 2012 7:04 AM

I used to love these types of prognostications….when I was 12. I think the best you can hope for is to pick a pool of teams most likely to be in the Super Bowl – for me, I think the AFC team will come from either New England, Houston, or Baltimore. The NFC is a little tougher, but I’ll go with either Green Bay, San Francisco, New Orleans, or the Giants.

  78. vcupats says: Aug 30, 2012 7:09 AM

Remember when Tom Brady came back from a year off and had mostly the same offensive personnel from his record-breaking season on 07? 10-6. Wild-card blowout. Didn’t execute in the clutch in several road games. Peyton Manning is coming back to a whole new team and a downgrade in offensive personnel. He would have to have one of his best seasons for the Broncos to make that kind of run.

  79. rtant2013 says: Aug 30, 2012 7:18 AM

So a team needs a great defense to go to the super bowl? News flash the patriots had the worse defense in the league last year. I don’t agree with either pick though. Manning could barely lead the Colts to a super bowl and that was with a stacked wr group. I really don’t even think he will make it through the season. The packers are a more logical pick, but the nfc is up for grabs. I don’t even think the packers will win their division, the bears will. If I had to make a choice, I think it will be Houston and the bears, with the bears winning. Afc teams don’t compare to the nfc teams now, so my bet would be whoever gets out of the nfc will win

Peter King is one of the worst jock-sniffers in sports journalism. His columns are long-winded and full of awful, awkward writing.

But do you know what I hate worse than Peter King? It’s people who act like they are clairvoyant when they correctly pick who won’t win the Super Bowl. You have a 97% chance of being right! Way to go out on a limb! Then, on the 3% chance they are wrong, they’ll do this, “Oh, well the refs clearly screwed up a call in week 7. If that call is right, team X loses the game, they don’t win their division, lose a tie breaker for a wild card and don’t even make the playoffs.”

Green Bay could go 13-3 and lose in OT of the Super Bowl, and Viking fans will be on here saying, “Ha ha! I knew the Packers sucked and wouldn’t win the Super Bowl. I told you in August.” They will simultaneously ignore their own team’s 4-12 season while declaring an NFC Championship season to be a failure of epic proportions while silently weeping that they wish their team could be contenders every year, but they know it’s not possible because their QBs are either guys who can’t convince themselves to retire or guys who were drafted far higher than they should have been.

Lol everyone on here is talking like the Broncos defense is just horrible or something…
We added Tracy Porter, Ty Warren will be back, our 2nd year safety Rahim Moore is looking good in camp, and Derek Wolfe will be a surpise this year. Not to mention perrenial pro bowler and future HOF CB Champ Bailey. To go with last years DROY Von Miller, and Elvis Dumervil on the edges….
We are going to be fine on defense this year.
This is the best defensive team that Peyton Manning will ever play with.
Manning has TE’s at his disposal in Denver, along with Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker… oh and his old pal Brandon Stokley.
Not to mention this is the best run game that he’s been around since the early days of Edgerin James.
This pick of Broncos and Packers in the Superbowl is not bad at all….
Peter just got the outcome wrong….

Browns over Cardinals 2-0 in triple overtime. Cards QB will fall down in the endzone for the safety just to end the misery.

only way gb gets to the super bowl is if they start harrell.

This guy does not understand football!! Like him or hate him, Rodgers is at the top of his game. Like to think the Pack will be in the Superbowl but the Broncos?? Don’t understand that one!

Years ago, I used to offer varying amounts of money (depended on how well I was doing financially) to friends, family, and coworkers who could tell me which two teams would be in the Super Bowl. If more than one person picked the same two, they split the pot accordingly.

It didn’t matter who won, and the picks had to be written down, signed, and be in my possession by the end of the 1st week of training camp. BOTH teams had to be in the SB; there were no half-winners.

They didn’t have to pay a dime, there was no pool, etc. If someone picked correctly, I just paid them whatever cash I was offering up. It was always at least $100, never more than $500. Just a sort of fun game to play.

Thing is, I never had to pay a dime – no one ever got both teams correctly. Too many variables and unknowns. Not to say one couldn’t get lucky and pick both, but a super computer isn’t going to be able to guarantee both teams.

King and everyone does this because it generates readers and reactions, something every publication, be it web-based or otherwise, needs.

If Peyton Manning is PEYTON MANNING again, (and I’m not convinced he is) then it’s a fair prediction.

I’m a Patriots fan but I always cringed whenever the Peyton Manning of old was lining up behind center against my team…and I expect to be doing more of the same this year. Have a ton of respect for him.

All that I have heard all off season is Manning haters especially since he’s joined the Broncos. Elway is no slouch when it comes to knowing what it takes to make it to the big show and even win two in a row. Elway did a nice job as a owner of the arena football team the Orange Crush and seemed to do pretty damn well last year minus the second round playoff game. With little to no passing attack. Manning is going to be playing with a fire like he has never had before because he knows that greatness is measured in sb wins. Manning makes everyone play much better around him and the Denver D saved the Denver offense on many occations last season. Denver has a solid kicker finally coming into his own and a formittable pass rush. Manning looked a little rusty in the first two preseason games, but looked very nice against the starting D of the 49ers. I can’t say anyone can predict more than playoff teams in the AFC with the stiff comp. But the Denver D with Jack DelRio at the helm should be stellar enough to take the AFC West. I had seen comments up here saying that the Charger or Cheifs will take the west those of you who said that must not watch very much football at all or had your head under a rock last season.

You can tell larrydavidstern don’t know his a** from a hole in the ground…even without manning the broncos would win the AFC west…the only competition is San Diego…so get a clue larrydavidstern

Manning and the packers will be one and done if they luck into the playoffs. It’s the norm for Manning after all.

the Cowboys will beat the Patriots in New Orleans in 2013. Tony Romo will be MVP an the media can no longer tag Tony with the scapegoat syndrome. GO cowboys super bowl bound!!!

Whats up with all the antitibronco comments? The broncos lead their division! Right now, they will play in the playoffs.
