RG3 loses his headphones after Sonny Jurgensen criticizes them

AP

Maybe Robert Griffin III was just listening to the Redskins pre-game show?

Or maybe the Redskins’ old school radio announcers are just showing their age.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post notes the rookie quarterback has changed his routine, dropping the headphones he was wearing prior to the first two games after being criticized by Sonny Jurgensen.

Apparently, according to Steinberg, Jurgensen made some disparaging remarks about the headphones during the second broadcast, and lo and behold, RG3 came out bare-eared for the Colts game.

At once, you want to respect Griffin for deferring to the legendary quarterback of the franchise he’s been asked to save from itself, if that’s what happened.

At the same time, you wonder why Jurgensen chose this particular thing to make an issue of. There will be folks who accuse Jurgensen of sinister motives. I think it’s probably just an old-and-out-of-touch issue more than anything.

Either way, it gives you one more reason to keep an eye on RG3 tonight, as if Redskins fans needed one.

  1. The QB is the leader, I think he should be among and firing up his teammates instead of just himself. Props to Sonny for making a point and RG3 for heeding it.

  2. What’s wrong with headphones? He’s not coming out with diamonds in his ear is he? He’s listening to music to get him in a certain mode for the game. I don’t see the problem and this is coming from a Giants fan.

  3. Sonny’s just upset that during his playing days, he couldn’t bring his 78 RPM records and Victrola onto the field during his warm up drills…

  4. How who cares period!!! Skins suck so does RG3 the sooner the skins fans learn this the sooner they can forget about this upcoming 3-13 season they r about to have and start thinkin bout Cousins!! Lol!!

  5. I like the kid. I think he’s going to be good for the Skins. I don’t care about headphones before the game, or that a old broadcaster doesn’t like them.

Skins will be better than people think.

  6. Even as diehard Eagles fan, there is something about this story that makes me really like RGIII. A young, rich, superstar who respects his elders even if they are out of touch and foolish? Its kind of refreshing.

  7. They should point out Willie”RG3″ Beamin for doing commercials without accomplishing anything on the field yet, eli, peyton and all other players made a name for themselves first on the field before they started doing commercials

  8. He probably forgot where he put them, I’m sure he will find them before the season starts. If not, he can afford to buy a new set.

  9. Sonny should get together with Jim Brown and Joe Namath so they can all languish in their sad lives

  10. Remember when Buck Showalter criticized Ken Griffey for wearing his hat backwards….Claiming this was somehow insulting to the game….Same Deal. I wonder if Sonny will find a problem with R’s dreds???

  11. Yeah, cause the SJ9s Sonny is always plugging on send a great message. I thought Sam was the one losing his marbles?

  12. Question is – how do you work out with studio headphones? I once tried that at the gym and it sucked. Gotta roll with the iPhone headphones w/ volume adjuster on the cord.

  13. RG3 needs to learn how to say no or enough. If he keeps doing everything some old has been wants him to do then he will end up like Jason Campbell. Dude, be yourself. Do what you did to get to the NFL, stay humble and keep working hard. You cannot change to accomodate everyone’s feelings. Trying to make everyone happy will drive you crazy.

  14. This reminds me of people talking about how fake Cam Newton smile is.

Some people can’t wrap their heads around the fact that there can be successful black quarterbacks. They have to find something to nitpick at them about and bring them down.

  15. It was ok for Sonny to drive home from the games hammered but not ok for RGIII to listen to music beforehand. Give it a rest you old windbag.

  16. I’m tired of retired QBs thinking their voice means something to the current players on their former teams.

There’s a line between being a franchise icon and stepping into the spotlight.

I’m especially looking at you, Joe Namath. Don’t these guys have a barstool to fall off of somewhere?

  17. Every player has different ways to get them into zones before games… He’s probably been doing this all throughout his collegiate career. That old fart just might have taken away this kids edge at getting into focus before a game. I know he’s your elder, RG3, but you don’t have to listen to everything they say. Just be respectful.

I’m a Dolfan by the way

  18. Sonny and Sam are the worst color commenters I’ve ever heard. They do no research, get names wrong and just sound like 2 old men watching the game at home.

  19. Sonny is still alive? Wow, the only former Redskin QB the rest of America ever hears from is Theisman, who never shuts up. Headphones, who cares. All the young kids out of school have their phones on prior to the game. Complain about something that matters, like how lousy the Redskins have been since Daniel bought the team.

  20. Maybe Sonny should check in with Bob Costas and cover all the self-righteous indignation angles. We get it: You’re old, you’re cranky and you don’t like young people doing things you think are wrong. Congratulations.

  21. Sonny has been a grumpy old man his entire life. Even when he was young.

    Especially when he was young!

    Keep your Beats, Robert.

  22. Players have been wearing headphones during pregame for as long as there have been headphones. That’s just stupid.

Here’s how you fix this. RGIII, supply your iPod playlist to the AV guys and just blast it over the loudspeakers. Give Sonny something to really complain about – although, who knows… maybe RGIII listens to Sinatra and Big Band music and Sonny will pipe down.

  23. Funny how about three years ago i could have sported some sweet sounding headphones and been mocked for “being out of touch” for nor wearing earbuds. Now Dre has the good sense to market great sounding headphones, and BOOM! They are all the rage. Now, of the kids go out and invest in a good set of Senheisers, they can hear the real deal.

  24. Sonny is your old, miserable, drunk uncle…grouchy and always looking for something to complain about. As a non-skins fan, I find him VERY entertaining when broadcasting games though. Calls stupid stupid, bad plays bad plays, and spoke the truth about Snyder when he tried to be Al Davis/Jerry Jones.

Believe me, at 22 years old RGIII already gas more confidence and character then Jason EVER had. Robert can command his presence whereever he is. Jason is shy beyond belief and looks like a deer in the headlights whenever a camera is on him. I shiver to think of all the years wasted on hoping Jason Campbell would become even decent. RGIII will lead this franchise back to prominence.

  26. Sonny and Sam have are legends, but they still have to go. They were great for years, but have become a bit of a joke. It is not fair to them.

  27. mattyk72 says:Aug 29, 2012 4:23 PM

I know most probably won’t agree, but the Skins need to get rid of Sonny and Sam in the booth. They are both way past their prime.

    ——————

    Chris Cooley is available.

  28. He shouldn’t have caved to the old man. If Jurgensen wanted to give him some actual useful criticism, he could have advised RGIII to drop those POS Beats headphones and get a brand that’s actually worth the money.

  29. I heard he was listening to a Sonny Jergensen instructional 8 track tape from 1976 entitled “QB or not QB…That is the Question”
    .
    RGIII = QB
    SJergensen = Cranky old b*stard

Basically, Sonny and Sam are those 2 old puppets in the balcony on The Muppet Show.

    OK, I just dated myself.

  31. The Post article says he was also wearing the headphones during running drills.

Poor RGIII, paid millions to actually concentrate on what he’s being paid to do, but the young hipster apparently can’t do that without being entertained at the same time.

Hey, break out the IPhone and do some texting while you’re at it. There’s nothing worse than boredom, is there. If someone needs to communicate with you, they can always send you a text, right?

Sorry to have interrupted you while you were in your entertainment zone, RGIII .

  32. People are so quick to read harsh motives into offhand comments. It shows real class by RGIII to honor the legacy of Jurgensen – if that is, indeed, why the headphones were gone.

Now, Sonny needs to be classy and say that his comment was blown out of proportion, and that Griffin should do what works for Griffin.

  33. @peytonsneck18

So its Roberts fault for companies calling him to do commercials? Yeah, like any athlete is going to say no. Cam newton did the same thing last year. Gatorade does it every year, and maybe RG3 just likes subway, and wanted free subs for life. This guy is probably the most grounded, unselfish guy that you could hope, he was brought up right by his parents, and he’s going to be an excellent player. He’s even still going to school to get his masters degree, I don’t get how anyone can say a bad word about him already.

  34. Peytonsneck18 aka redskins jock jumper … Educate urself on last year – cam newton and the commercials and endorsements he had BEFORE playing a game the same thing ur whining RG3 about.. Also why are u so infatuated by the redskins and RG3 ?

  35. Sonny Jurgensen must be what, 75 years old or something like that? What’s he doing in the broadcast booth giving advice to today’s players anyway? Truth be told, Jurgensen, even in his prime, couldn’t play in today’s NFL. He was too fat and too slow to escape the athletic pass rushers of today. He’d get killed out there.

  36. John Mara wants to know if RG3 purchased his own head phones – he believes that if they were team issued then a further salary cap adjustment is warranted.

  37. RGIII knows who he is and what he’s doing. You dorks on here that want to try and give him advice are really laughable. Trust me, he’s a lot smarter and capable than you are and probably ever will be. Just sit back and watch the man ball out.

  38. Someone let Jurgensen know LeBron and Kobe constantly have headphones on.

    This isn’t 1960 anymore.

  39. In response to Griffin taking the headphones off Sonny then yelled:

    “ALSO…GET OFF MY LAWN!”

  40. Let’s face it folks, The NFL of today is a lot different than it was “back in the day”.

Used to be a player had his hair cut and wore a suit to the game on game day, It created a sense of unity among the players of that era.

Today, almost every player is more concerned about their own personal performance and what they can get paid for wearing whatever, drinking whatever and eating whatever.

Win or lose, todays NFLer only plays for the money. “Love of the game” went out with the likes of Dick Butkus and Ray Nitchke.

  41. I can relate to Jurgenson… people shouldn’t constantly be tuning out their environment in public. (There are other people around, why not acknowledge them). On the other hand it’s better than, say, blasting a boom box and making everyone else listen too.

I guess I’m an old fart at heart.

  42. Truth be told, Jurgensen, even in his prime, couldn’t play in today’s NFL. He was too fat and too slow to escape the athletic pass rushers of today. He’d get killed out there.

    ——————-

Most guys who were in their primes in the 1960s couldn’t play in the NFL today. Everyone today is bigger, stronger, and faster than those guys.

  43. It’s called respect. He’s the QB and is going to work not a club. He should be out talking to his teamates about what’s going to happen during the game. Leaders communicate with their teams. Wearing headphones puts you in your own world keeping you seperate from what’s going on..

I think some of us older fans will agree while some of the younger won’t..

  44. Actually asking a rookie QB making over 10 million dollars per year to not wear headphones before a game is quite reasonable. As the leader of the offense he should be pumping up the team not unlike Ray Lewis.

However having an ex-QB like Jurgensen who showed up to games with a hangover; the critisism rings hollow. I’d also like to see the scorecard on how many games Jurgensen broadcast sober. I’m guess those instances are a rarity.

  45. Hey, he’s just a typical member of the It’s-All-About-Me-Me-Me-Generation.

Needs constant amusement, needs 24/4 entertainment on various platforms, because he can’t abide being alone with his thoughts, because he probably doesn’t have any.

But in spite of being a member of the generation of whom three out of four can’t name a single member of the Supreme Court, can’t name the three branches of government, and wouldn’t know the Bill of Rights from a phone bill, by all means text and Twitter 24/7 because every banal idea that passes through your brain must surely be shared with everyone you know!

Because you are important, and we know in your world there’s nothing worse than boredom.

So keep those headphones on, RGIII, because someone might be confused and believe you’re listening to an AudioBook, and that way you can pass yourself off as someone who has actually read something other than Maxim over the past five years.

    You go, RGIII !

  46. Thats ridiculous. If I were RG3, I would stick a middle finger up Sonny’s ass and say “Who’s your daddy, old man?”

BTW Cam Newton has a endorsement deal with Beats by Dre, and had several boxes full of them at the Panthers training camp sitting in the locker rooms.

  47. They are not remotely the same type of person, but Jamarcus Russell used to do this as well….

Basically its a bad leadership choice to have huge headphones on during pre-game because the QB is the center of the offense and by extension, the entire team. That player cannot afford to isolate himself from his teamates in any way. Coaches may have final directives, teamates can have questions, pointers, etc. Those around him need to know the QB is with them, not in his own zone.

A hockey goaltender can do this, perhaps other positions in football also, but a QB no way.

  48. I didn’t hear what Sonny said, but if he meant Griffin should lose the phones so he can be more engaged with his teammates during warmups, then he is 100% on the mark!

And, I appreciate Griffin having enough respect for the greatest QB in franchise history to listen to him.

However, as a performing musician with a fair amount of stage and studio work on my resume, I can tell you that anyone who spends that much on a pair of headphones is throwing away good money.

  49. I am sure that RGIII is black has nothing to do with it at all. Look at how the Redskins treat Doug Williams, who won them a Super Bowl.. And look at their name.

  50. The headphones are signs arrogance and selfishness. And a sign of immaturity. All the Divas seem to wear them in recent years. However, what counts is how the team fares (not just how RGIII fares). If they win, great. If they go 5-11, maybe he ought to put away his toys and go to work.

  51. I guess I’ll be the old guy of the group and agree with Jurgenson.

Name one othe starting QB who has ever taken the field for warm-ups with headphones on.

    I can’t think of a single one.

You are supposed to be the face of the franchise and the leader of the men who make up your 53 man team.

You are not supposed to be a diva hipster who is warming up all by himself to go out for a solo jog.

Glad to see Griffin ditched the headphones, but it is a little red flag that he was wearing them in the first place… much like his ridiculous clown suit on draft day.

  52. I think the headphones are sign that he enjoys music while psyches up and gets focused for the game. He can talk to his players when the game is going. He doesn’t have to be in everyone’s ear before the game. These are grown men, not babies. I swear you people all look for any excuse to put RGIII down and call him diva or whatever. It’s really lame. Worry about your team’s sorry QB.

  53. Every player has a routine , besides RG3 ( sounds like something out of Star Wars) wants to be a media darling that’s why he did what this guy said to do and lose the headphones

  54. For my money he should lose the headphones… If you want to be a leader and the face of a franchise one of the 1st things you would want to do is show to everyone you are accessible, engaged and interested in connecting with your team. Wearing head phones to me sends the message that I have something better to listen to than my teammates. What is a team suppose to do if they want to talk to him. Tap him on the shoulder and ask permission to speak

  55. A rookie needs to keep his eyes AND ears open and tuned in to what is going on around him.
He is at WORK, not hanging out at the house.
Listen to music on your own time kid.

  56. Lord this is funny! Sonny is even older than me and a bigger redneck. I think RG3 is pretty cool to be a little deferential to him since he’s a real legend, but anyone who’s watched a lot of interviews with Sonny knows you’re never gonna really please him.

Headphones? Well headphones do cut off communication between people to an extent, so it’s worth thinking about. I can see having headphones on the exercise bike, but I’m not sure they’re the best thing during drills.

  57. What happened is that he realized what crap headphones they are, most overrated on the market. Dr Dre should be slapped for hawking such a crap product.

  58. You figure RG3 would have the wireless Beats with the loot he makes, but all jokes aside leave the kid alone Sonny don’t be a hater times change and everyone is different be a little more open minded when you speak you old change purse

  59. I agree with the people who say he should lose them. There isn’t anything more anti-team than a player isolating himself inside his headphones. And a QB can’t do that.

Good for RG3 for taking the constructive criticism and doing the right thing.

  60. Imagine if Tony Romo did this. This ham-n-egger hasn’t even thrown a real pass yet and he thinks he can listen to Taylor Swift on the sideline. Even worse, the Redskins didn’t see anything wrong with it.

  61. 1. No one (which includes Sonny and us) knows what he’s listening to. We don’t know if it’s constructive or not.

    2. He was wearing ear buds at the game today. It was clearly visible on the jumbotron.

  62. Griffin has more problems than being a punk child of the electronic era and not being able to function without his tunes. Griffin is not very good with the deep ball and isn’t very efficient with his running of the offense. When your starting quarterback can only throw two touchdown passes in over 12 drives, you have a big problem – he’s had 2 fumbles lost to go with it.

Interestingly just as Griffin threw three deep balls against the Colts and woefully missed each one, his backup, Kirk Cousins, had great touch and dropped his bombs into the hands of his receivers against the Bucs. It really doesn’t matter than Griffin was playing first string against first string and Cousins was with second team against second team – Cousins’ throws had the balls landing right into the hands of the second rate receivers whereas Griffin’s were even close to being caught.

There will be a QB controversy in Washington – Griffin is nowhere as good as he has been claimed to be and Cousins is far better than he was said to be. Watching Cousins command the field with decisive play making against the helter skelter approach of Griffin is striking. I’d take Cousins’ ability to make plays with his arm over the suspect ability of Griffin to be elusive.

The type of QB that Griffin is has not won a Super Bowl in decades. Lanky, elusive QB’s are not championship winning QB’s. Look at the near boat anchor types that win more often.

  63. I see that many of you miss the point as usual. Sonny does not have a problem with the young man wearing the headphones. He has a problem with the headphones acting as a barrier between Griffin and the leadership of his team. Before every game, you see Drew Brees in the middle of his team mates yelling and leading them in pre-game preparations. Not off in a corner listening to music.

  64. filmex2000:

Awesome post, right on the money.

The only good thing about getting old is the wisdom we pick up along the way.

    Cheers.

  65. He needs to return those WAY overpriced POS headphones anyways. When will people realize that if a celebrities name is on something that is probably the only selling point. (Even if its a legendary producer)

  66. I think it’s way past time to replace Sam Huff, he’s like your crazy grandpa that stays in his recliner mumbling disturbing things to himself. But Sonny still makes valid points during the broadcast and has intelligent things to say. Not sure if this falls into that category though.

  67. It’s funny because the Beats headphones are inferior to ones that cost half as much, but I guess it’s more cool to be a sheep.

  68. Lol @tdk24

But sriusly – Nothing wrong with what anyone did here.

It’s fine for Grif to want to rock out w/ his SJK out before the game. It’s fine for Gandalf to point out how that could actually separate Grif from his objective. And it’s fine that Grif actually listened to a mentor.

    Good on all of ’em.

  69. If he is on the sidelines, he shouldn’t have headphones on. He’s the quarterback. He should be available to coaches and team mates as he is the team leader. People with head phones on give the appearance of being unaproachable. Is that what you want from your quaterback?

  70. Yeah Jurgensen is an old crust, but just makes me like RGIII more if thats what he’s doing- I hope his positive attitude holds under Kaiser Shannahan

  71. Sonny Jurgensen’s comments are nothing but ignorance. Everybody has there own way of relaxing in order to get into game mode.

I suppose Jurgenson is upset that Lebron read the “The Hunger Games” minutes before he took the court? Is Jurgensen upset that Dustin Hoffman ran around the block seconds before doing his scene with Laurence Olivier?

Jurgensen should appologize especially after RG3 was respectful enough to leave the headphones at home for him.

How about Sonny made a reasonable comment about Griffin’s behavior, Griffin heard it and followed through? Maybe I’m an idiot, but I’m pretty sure the story is as simple as that. Sonny is not a senile old Nazi for asking Robert to take the headphones off, and Robert is not a boneheaded diva bust for wearing the headphones in the first place.
