If they want more money and a pension have them full time employees of the league and also they need to make them more accountable for their calls have the commish fine them for bad calls.
It's good to hear that when the season opens we may have the regular refs back. The game just isn't the same with professional athletes and coaches competing against each other and amateur officials potentially affecting the outcome. Televised professional sports is entertainment. We should expect that the people who provide the entertainment are paid more than the average Joe, part-time or not. In a billion dollar industry the customers should not have to suffer because of a dispute over compensation to a handfull of refs.

This is embarrassing. The NFl should be ashamed of themselves to even disclose what they're wrangling about.

If I were them I would have taken great pain to hide that this rift is over a total $23 million in a billion dollar a year industry.

Jamarcus Russell essentially got that much money to be a bust as a number one pick, but people who are pretty irreplaceable judging by the cliff like drop off in quality to these fake officials somehow are not worth it.

What exactly is the deadline? The NFL (I believe it was Ray Anderson) has said it will take 7-10 (don't believe that). I would say it has to be done by Sunday. If the regular officials can't ref the Giants-Cowboys game I have to believe the league will use replacements for the rest of week one. Kind of unfair to Dallas and NY Giants for them to have replacement officials and everyone else the real officials.

Compromise. Give the officials the pay they want in exchange for the NFL getting to hire more officials. And then fire the officials who don't perform or who regularly screw up.

You get what you pay for. Having refs who have no experience dealing with the speed and violence of professional football out there protecting millionaire players makes no more sense than buying a Lambourghini and deciding to save a few bucks by refusing to buy auto insurance. Pay the most experienced refs for their service and retain the ability to get rid of them quickly if they don't do well. Should be an easy compromise.

I think what I am most excited about is that with the regular refs back, there will never be a blown call again. The coaches and the players are almost committed to being 100% supportive of the regular refs. And perhaps most refreshingly all the people on this site who have been so antagonistic against the replacement refs, will never have a single complaint about a call. If they do, they are complete hypocrites (but then we knew that already, didn't we?).

The real issue here appears to be individual accountability for officials. So, NFLRA, man up and sign.

The literally THOUSANDS of hours that officials put into training, evaluating themselves, studying rules, studying the new rules, looking at interpretations, looking at examples and non-examples, figuring out when to let a minor infraction go, knowing the penalties and distances that go with every rule, not being intimidated by the moment, coaches, or players; making decisions on player safety, perfecting judgement calls, working their way up the ranks, staying in shape, perfecting their signals and teamwork…

---------------------------

40 hrs/wk * 52 wks/yr = 2080. That's a fulltime job the entire year. 2000 would be the bare minimum for 1000's of hours.

The officials do not spend 8 hours a day/5 days a week/52 weeks a year on reffing. Not even close, I'd say you aren't in the ballpark but you aren't even on the right continent.

22.7 mil spread across 32 teams over 7 years???? GET A DEAL DONE ALREADY. I'm not siding with either here and frankly I don't see much worse if at all in the replacement refs' calls. The drop off I see is in all the wasted time with ball spots, clock runoff issues, offsetting calls, and some of the other stuff that is confusing these guys so bad. Or the pull the flag because the offender didn't intend to do so. That happened twice in the SF/DEN game. The challenge of a non challengable call which Harbaugh had to explain to them. Ultimately they kept it 4th down after a 15 yard penalty?, then pulled the flag altogether because Fox didn't mean to violate the rule? Then niners have 12 defenders on the field the ball is clearly snapped and in play. Flags go down... oh oops we're gonna award a time out now? This is the crap I don't want to deal with. Bad calls are always gonna happen when they are split second judgement calls. It's the other junk that needs to go

22.7 mil spread across 32 teams over 7 years???? GET A DEAL DONE ALREADY. I’m not siding with either here and frankly I don’t see much worse if at all in the replacement refs’ calls. The drop off I see is in all the wasted time with ball spots, clock runoff issues, offsetting calls, and some of the other stuff that is confusing these guys so bad. Or the pull the flag because the offender didn’t intend to do so. That happened twice in the SF/DEN game. The challenge of a non challengable call which Harbaugh had to explain to them.
Saying NFL officiating is a "hobby" is akin to stating being a lawyer is a "hobby" because a lawyer only steps into a courtroom every once in a while.

The literally THOUSANDS of hours that officials put into training, evaluating themselves, studying rules, studying the new rules, looking at interpretations, looking at examples and non-examples, figuring out when to let a minor infraction go, knowing the penalties and distances that go with every rule, not being intimidated by the moment, coaches, or players; making decisions on player safety, perfecting judgement calls, working their way up the ranks, staying in shape, perfecting their signals and teamwork...

It's a lifestyle and a full-time job even if you only perform 20 times a year.

I agree, enough is enough. Time for brinksmanship to come to an end and get the deal done, so the regular refs can do week 1. It's too bad it took so long because the regular refs need a pre-season too.

Wow. The NFL is greed-mongering over a measly 3 mill or so a year to pay the officials? how much revenue does the NFL bring in a year and they can't give the fans quality refs? That's like the cost of a kicker per year to ref the whole league. give me a break.
