Getty ImagesVaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune reports the Bears have released quarterback Josh McCown.
The move leaves Chicago with only Jason Campbell and Jay Cutler on the roster at quarterback. They could look to the waiver wire for a third-stringer following Friday’s final cuts, or perhaps keep a No. 3 like Matt Blanchard on the practice squad.
McCown, 33, performed admirably down the stretch last season after taking over for Caleb Hanie, who was brutal. Unfortunately for the Bears, the season had already circled the drain by that point.
The Bears also have waived linebacker Jabara Williams, wide receiver Brittan Golden, safety Mark LeGree, and cornerbacks Cornelius Brown and Greg McCoy, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. They hope to re-sign Williams to the practice squad. Mike C. Wright of ESPN Chicago reports rookie cornerback Isaiah Frey has been waived and should join Williams as an in-season practice body.
McClure reports running back Armando Allen has also been waived.
Adam Caplan previously reported that fullback Tyler Clutts will likely be waived by the Bears.

Clutts will be picked up by the Browns. He was showcasing his talents last night for us and did extremly well.
Just Sayin’…Go Brownies!!
I suspect teams who are feeling too thin at backup QB will take a good look at McCown
Hopefully the Bears can pick up a LB off waivers.

Or thin at QB, period. Why wouldn’t the Cardinals pick him up? (I think he started his career there, actually).
Armando Allen looked really good this preseason. I wish that they would have kept him over Lorenzo Booker.
I am surprised they cut both drafted CB’s and mildly surprised at McCown being cut also. The rest of the cuts were expected, even Clutts….
I had no idea Josh McCown was still kicking around. Good for him?
They should have kept Clutts over Kyle Adams, who hasn’t shown anything really. But he’s a TE and Tice prefers TEs over FBs even if they’re buried on the depth chart.
Also surprised that both CB draft picks were cut. Kind of a waste there when Emery could have gotten a big body for the O-line at that spot.
Dont worry Bears fans Emery will get Chicago a OT an a DT off wavers
an a CB would be nice too. Emery would not have let go of two late round picks if he didnt have something going on that we havent seen yet
Clutts traded to Houston for Sherrick McManis.
Whew! My classmate still making it happen. My boy desmond Clark.
Good trade for Bears with Clutts. McManis seems to have a great build and is better fit for our D than Houston’s.
I think Emery is playing the number’s game and betting that he can still keep his draft picks in McCoy and Frey on the practice squad. You also have to keep in keep in mind this is one of the Bears deepest teams talent wise since the 83-86 ish teams.
Anyone know the rules for practice squad players?
Wondering if Armando Allen is practice squad eligible?
Not sure he is since he actually played late last year. He would be a nice one to keep if he makes it through waivers.
Only reason they would release Clutts is because they want a bigger FB at pass protection, a TE like Rodriguez.
voiceofsweetness,
I believe the rules are once you’ve played in so many games (4 or 6) then you’re practice squad ineligible. I may be wrong though.
My guess is they cut McCown to let him have a chance to get a job as a second stringer somewhere. He probably wasn’t thrilled with being 3rd in line.
He’ll get picked up somewhere, at a bargain basement price.
