Afterwads, the Patriots’ top-5 ranked defense steadily worsened in quality, as Pioli-acquired players retired or left in free agency.

Last yaer, the Patriots’ defense was one of the worst units in the NFL last year by several measures. Notably, it allowed QBs like Joe Flacco and Eli Manning to torch them for 300-350 yards in the AFC Championship game and Super Bowl – and those are not two QBs who most people would describe as “top-5.”

But yeah – Belichek’s done a great job drafting without Pioli.
