Rookie linebacker Courtney Upshaw’s rocky first preseason as a professional ended on a down note Thursday night.
Upshaw re-injured the shoulder he sprained earlier in the preseason and did not return after leaving the game against the Rams in the second quarter. Coach John Harbaugh said that Upshaw’s injury is a concern.
“Yeah, I’m concerned,” Harbaugh said, via Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. “We’ll find out tomorrow with an MRI what it is.”
Upshaw had previously missed a game and a week of practice because of the injury, part of the reason why he’s still fighting with Albert McLellan, who has his own problems to deal with, for a starting job after spending the entire spring working with the ones. Another part is that he showed up to camp heavy, which gives the impression that he thought he had won a job that the Ravens still considered open.
Upshaw finished the preseason with three tackles and one sack, numbers that will need to go up if he’s going to help the team fill the hole left by Terrell Suggs this season.
