James Starks “safe” on Packers roster as deadline looms

Despite some recent speculation that Packers tailback James Starks might be on the roster bubble in Green Bay, Bill Huber of Packer Report reports that Starks’ roster spot is “safe” as final cuts approach.

A source told Huber that Starks will join Cedric Benson and Alex Green in the Packers’ backfield to open the season. Starks is currently recovering from turf toe, but the Packers seem to believe he will recover enough to be a 2012 contributor.

In related news, we previously passed along eight of Green Bay’s early cuts. Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette uncovered five more.

Per Huber, the Packers have also released or waived defensive tackle Daniel Muir, running back Marc Tyler, wide receiver Diondre Borel, and fullback Nic Cooper.

Alex Green should wrap things up by week 10.

Packers will be a one trick pony offense,,,doubt a rb hits 100 yards in a game for them this year.

The released players can join the other 53 Packers who will not get a Super Bowl ring following the season….

Saints won’t even make the playoffs.

It’s also sad that their only SB will forever have that asterisk.

We can all be thankful that Isaac wasn’t any worse, or the Saints could be looking at a second fake ring.

It actually looks like the strongest Packer backfield since Edgar Bennet and Dorsey Levens shared it in the 90s. Good things happened then. In ’96, Ed & Dorsey combined for 1465 yards.

I doubt this 3 horse committee will accumulate that many yards, but I see can easily see them reaching 1000 combined yards enroute to a super bowl birth.

Yea, I know. The haters are coming!

I don’t know why he’s safe on the roster. He’s never healthy and when he is, he’s merely serviceable as a runner and he’s horrid in pass protection.

James Starks wont be “safe” once Jared Allen gets ahold of him! ;)

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. The Vikings are laying any hopes they can muster on the legs of a one-legged paperhanger. That’s all they have! And he’ll blow his knee out again trying to prove how tough he is. Give it a rest. Your time will come, but it won’t be this year.

How can a 5 person fleet of starting quality receivers (which includes one expert return man/receiver/RB/QB in Cobb), plus a career RB with plenty of juice left-Benson, plus an extremely aware & athletic QB-Rodgers, be catorgorized as a one trick pony? You can do anything, any type of play with those guys. That was a very ignorant remark.

They can’t cut Starks, there is no one else. I think they would without all the injuries but for now he stays.
Turf toe. Get real. This guy is a whimp. He can have a hangnail and miss six games.
For now he is insurance and thats all.
He better get well soon and do something

Do the Vikings have a WR who could make the Packers’ roster?

Benson only needs 10 to 12 touches a game to make a difference for the Packers this year. Most of them will be runs, but I expect him to catch a few passes out of the backfield to keep defenders honest. I doubt that any rational person will be calling Green Bay’s offense a one trick pony by the end of the season.

    So what?

The only time I would want a 100 yard rusher would be in the fourth quarter and they are eating up clock.

Otherwords I don’t want to give an RB 22-30 carries a game.

They have the best player in the league, why take the ball out of his hands, its worked pretty good for them the last 2 years.

  14. stellarperformance says: Sep 1, 2012 12:19 AM

When Benson has his chances and if he breaks one or two or three long gains in a span of games, he’ll force the Packer coaches to run more stuff his way. He has the potential to improve an already impressive offense. He certainly can’t hurt. The upside is more realistic the the downside.

The packers will need Starks cause Benson is going to Jail in Wisconsin..Hes not smart enough to be there…
plus Rodgers wont give him the carries he need to stay on the team… By Christmas Benson is gone.

  16. thetokyosandblaster says: Sep 1, 2012 11:28 AM

Meh, Benson knew that this team is the favorite to win
The Super Bowl for the next few years, which is why he signed for such little money.

If you really want to talk about unhappy running backs, look no further than Forte, who has been a little crybaby about his contract for a long, long time.

Tice wants two thousand yard backs? With that oline? Maybe they’ll total 1,000…but only if you include receiving yards. Those little dumpoff passes are all I’d let Quitler throw anyway.
