When Josh Johnson signed with the 49ers as a free agent, there was some thought that he would have a leg up in the battle for backup quarterback spots because he played for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.

That did not turn out to be the case. The axe fell on Johnson’s neck Friday when the 49ers announced their cuts to 53 players on Friday, leaving Scott Tolzein as the third quarterback behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. Johnson put up better numbers than Tolzein in the preseason, but that wasn’t enough to keep him in San Francisco. It will likely be enough to get him at least a look from several teams looking for help at quarterback this season.

One guy that did make the 49ers roster was undrafted rookie tight end Garrett Celek. He’s the younger brother of the Eagles’ Brent Celek, which means that Dan Gronkowski needs to find new work if his clan is able to stay in the lead in the NFL family rankings.

The rest of the 49ers’ cuts and roster moves are in our 53-man roster tracker, along with the moves of every team that’s announced them.
