Josh Johnson gets dropped by 49ers

Josh Johnson AP

When Josh Johnson signed with the 49ers as a free agent, there was some thought that he would have a leg up in the battle for backup quarterback spots because he played for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.

That did not turn out to be the case. The axe fell on Johnson’s neck Friday when the 49ers announced their cuts to 53 players on Friday, leaving Scott Tolzein as the third quarterback behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick. Johnson put up better numbers than Tolzein in the preseason, but that wasn’t enough to keep him in San Francisco. It will likely be enough to get him at least a look from several teams looking for help at quarterback this season.

One guy that did make the 49ers roster was undrafted rookie tight end Garrett Celek. He’s the younger brother of the Eagles’ Brent Celek, which means that Dan Gronkowski needs to find new work if his clan is able to stay in the lead in the NFL family rankings.

The rest of the 49ers’ cuts and roster moves are in our 53-man roster tracker, along with the moves of every team that’s announced them.

Josh looked good yesterday, but Tolzein is a better QB. tolzein can run the offense…. Johnson will just run.

Josh Johnson would not commit career suicide by signing with the Cardinals he will benefit more by being second string in Oakland behind Carson Palmer who sucks and terel Pryor the one to challenge.

As is rock Cartwright is Oakland bound and many others…

I saw him play when he was with the bucs. Guy has a hell of an arm, runs like the old vick but has no accuracy. He’s like a homeless mans Vick. Solid back up tho.

How bad can this guy be if he is not good enough to be the 3rd string QB on a team that Alex Smith as a starter

He has no arm whatsoever, even the arm of Alex is a little stronger. But Josh sure can run.

He’s really fast, but his accuracy and timing are godawful; his skill is running around and throwing the ball a really long way possibly somewhere within the general area of a receiver. The guy hasn’t shown anything that indicates he can be a starting NFL QB.

Let’s put it this way–as a Bucs fan, I’m much happier with Dan Orlovsky as our backup QB.

Not sure he’ll end up anywhere else. According to the article, the 9ers didn’t just cut him; they decapitated him. Harsh.

  19. ninerdynasty says: Sep 1, 2012 5:44 PM

the thing is.. Josh was going to b the 3rd QB.. i think harbaugh just decided to cut him so he has an opportunity to compete in another team.. the niners are SET with CK7 as the backup and josh had no chance in getting in the field.. Tolzien is a cheaper option to carry a clipboard around.
