Getty ImagesJason Witten won’t need surgery on his injured spleen, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be ready to play in five days.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that, after meeting with specialist this weeks, doctors haven’t cleared Witten to play. One source characterized Witten’s chances of playing as “not good.”
Per Schefter, doctors have explained to Witten that, unlike an injury through which he could tough it out, he would be risking serious injury by playing.
And so the question becomes whether Witten will be cleared to play in 16 days, when the Cowboys play the Seahawks in Week Two.

He’s a beast but this news just made the Cowboys 0-1 on the season come thursday morning.
So we are just going to assume that Schefter is never wrong? I’ll still be surprised if Witten doesn’t play Wednesday night.
guess ur name is insane for a reason.. giants have injuries also
is this the same adam schefter who reported last week that Witten had met with doctors and said he was good to go…when in reality Stephen Jones said JW hadn’t even had a Dr.’s visit yet. Grain of salt.
Hahahahhahahaa
Suit up John Phillips, show Marty(Jupiter Crunch)Bennett why the dumped him!!
They were going to be 0-1 regardless. And I’m a Cowboys fan.
Don’t worry, Jason
According to the Papa John’s mascot, Dallas is going 19-0 this year
As a Giant fan, I’m relieved at this news. Witten is a monster, and I’d rather not see the Giants have to try and contain him. I wish him a speedy recovery, but hold it off until week 2!
“But you’re sayin’ there is a chance?”
Witten is a tough guy that does not miss games but this injury is different than a lot of them in the past. He should not risk more serious imjury. Has a family with kids that he will want to enjoy the next several years.
Love to see you play but it’s not worth it Jason.
Get well Witten, sit out the whole damn season!
Get healthy Witten!
man life is more important than this game. i am a cowboys fan i know they need you, but at the end of the day your family aside from the cowboys need you. come back mid season
