The Dolphins hoped receiver Clyde Gates, a fourth-round pick in the 2011 draft, would step up in his second year. Former Dolphins coach Tony Sparano will now have that same hope in New York.
Gates was claimed on waivers by the Jets on Saturday, along with nose tackle Isaako Aaitui (Dolphins) and tight end Konrad Rueland (49ers).
In turn, the Jets waived safety Antonio Allen (a seventh-round pick in 2011), defensive tackle Marcus Dixon, and tight end Dedrick Epps.
The move to add Gates makes sense, given that he knows the Sparano offense. Of course, Gates knew it only well enough to make two catches for 19 yards as a rookie.
Gates also brings depth to special teams. He returned 34 kicks and three punts in 2011.
