Ravens trying to restructure McKinnie’s deal, may have released him

Bryant McKinnie AP

The Ravens may be on the verge of a major move.

Or it may already be made.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports the team is trying to restructure the contract of left tackle Bryant McKinnie today, and that the “situation could lead to his release.”

Then again, there’s a chance it already has.

Within the last hour, McKinnie posted on Twitter the following: “Decision is made! I’m gone!

The Ravens want to pay him less than the $3.2 million base salary he’s set to make, perhaps even at the risk of uprooting their offensive line again.

Stay tuned.

UPDATE 12:28 p.m. ET: Wilson just tweeted that in a text message asking if he was no longer on the team, McKinnie replied “Yes.”

UPDATE 1:03 p.m. ET: But wait, there’s more. McKinnie texted Wilson again, saying “Just go a phone call its not officially over as of yet.”

Bad news for the Ravens..Oher isnt LT material.

  3. voiceofreasonsays says: Sep 4, 2012 12:31 PM

Good…release him so he can rejoin his pal Bill Cundiff on the best pro football team in Maryland.

  4. banky74 says: Sep 4, 2012 12:32 PM

Can’t think of a more deserving guy to be at the unemployment line. Lazy POS that only shows speed and strength when running to the bank to cash a signing bonus or swatting poor little chidrens out of the way at Golden Corral.

  5. Tuomas says: Sep 4, 2012 12:34 PM

The Cardinals need to jump on him with a bunch the $10 million they have in cap space.

  6. t16rich says: Sep 4, 2012 12:36 PM

McKinnie is the definition of potential that doesn’t take the extra step. I wouldn’t want to pay this guy that much either. His history only reflects a lack of work ethic and legal controversy.

Ask Aaron Wilson to find out if he’s in southern california yet

Best front office in the NFL! (or at least somewhere in the middle of the pack, right Joe Flacco??)

Some people just dont get it.

McKinnie failed conditioning tests in Minnesota and Baltimore, what more can one expect?

Just because you have the skill set to be a starting offensive lineman in the NFL doesnt mean that you deserve the chance to play or have the will/desire to be a professional.

  11. jesse834 says: Sep 4, 2012 12:40 PM

Greats news to an already shaky offensive line….. Not I want to bang my head into a wall right now.

    Welcome to Arizona, Bryant.

  13. jmclarkent says: Sep 4, 2012 12:49 PM

I don’t question the move -it is the timing that is a tad odd. LT is a pretty important position to turnover so late – someone must have showed promise.

  14. thankheavenfornumberseven says: Sep 4, 2012 12:49 PM

It’s time for him to move on to his next job: Being a burden on society.

  15. ninjapleazee says: Sep 4, 2012 12:52 PM

McKinnie would be a major upgrade over Webb and Williams make the move Chicago!

Gotta love the bashing from non-Ravens fans who don’t know the whole story. This is literally cundiff all over again. Everyone likes to say who terrible they are (Cundiff and McKinney) and then we cut them and its “oh the Ravens are in trouble now!” Do me a favor folks: pick a side and stick it.

Just like Cundiff, this is less about poor performance and more about his replacements ability. Many forget KO from the draft (Kelechi Osemele) but he’s been more than capable of handling first string duties this preseason at the RT spot. The coaches know he can handle it, but gave McKinney one last shot by restructuring his contract (given his lack of effort, he didn’t deserve his salary) and he declined. No worries, Oher to left, KO at right and we’re better off than we were before.

Ravens fans know this. Everyone else just wants a reason to attack. Enjoy it while it lasts friends.

  18. iamthefootballjerk says: Sep 4, 2012 1:00 PM

A lot of faith in Oseleme. I am surprised that McKinnie was able to respond to any messages with his Big Mac meal in hand.

  19. jesse834 says: Sep 4, 2012 1:03 PM

LOL, if you meant best team in Maryland in finishing in the lottery every year then you are bang on.

  20. joetoronto says: Sep 4, 2012 1:05 PM

    McKinnie is just misunderstood.

    Signed,

    Jared Gaither

  21. pleazenufalready says: Sep 4, 2012 1:06 PM

If he’s been released, it’s no great surprise…..what a waste! Most guys who have ever strapped on a helmet would give their left gonad for a chance to play in the NFL……here’s a guy with the the size and athletic ability to be a star and potential HOFer and look where he’s at now…..pathetic

  22. purplehayseuss says: Sep 4, 2012 1:07 PM

    Let’s see: Lazy, broke, stupid.

Seems to me that the Ravens didn’t want to pay his garnishment. I wouldn’t either. Now the Vikings don’t look so dumb, right?

Amazingly, there is a team in the NFL that will pay him. He’ll be on another roster by the end of the week, for the vet minimum.

  23. mrgroovesd says: Sep 4, 2012 1:08 PM

As much as the Bolts need an LT, please don’t sign him. Gaithers is having “issues” and this guy would be another headache with the other headaches happening now with the Bolts.

  24. gbilljb says: Sep 4, 2012 1:08 PM

Come on over to San Diego, between Gaither and McKinnie we can have the two most overpaid, lazy, under producing LT in the league. Woo – Hoo.

  25. thesmartestmanever says: Sep 4, 2012 1:08 PM

everyone saying he can’t play, and calling him lazy then why would the ravens try to restructure his deal? I say if they let him go already, I hope he knows how to use the B.W. parkway..HTTR!!!

  26. khuxford says: Sep 4, 2012 1:12 PM

According to Florio, the Jets have around $8m left…let them sign him to play RT.

  27. thetechnocrat says: Sep 4, 2012 1:13 PM

I don’t see anything shaky about the line other than Oher’s propensity to false start 10 times a game. Osemele is supposedly a monster.

  28. tialen says: Sep 4, 2012 1:15 PM

hey McKinnie, don’t take anything other than a pay raise from those bone heads. There are a ton of teams that are in serious need of a tackle!

  35. jaketdogg says: Sep 4, 2012 2:00 PM

He will show up in a W hotel lobby bar somewhere within the next 12 hours…guaranteed. Dude is too lazy to close the sunroof on his Bentley during a thunderstorm (no joke)

  36. drwbrsdmndsnxplntn says: Sep 4, 2012 2:03 PM

McKinnie is terrible. Steve Huchinson made him look like a pro-bowler all those years hes always been a giant fat blob of mediocrity.

Its amazing, for how much people bash the Vikings, they think we must be idiots. After watching Tarvaris Jackson go 3 and out repediatly than start tossing pick 6s for years, people all of a sudden think he is going to be the next Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle. Than we release our franchise LT(McKinnie) and the same happens.

Just…pay attention next time…we know what we are talking about.

  37. ravenator says: Sep 4, 2012 2:11 PM

Keep on hating haters. Hey who did the steelers lose to last game? Oh that’s right, it was Tebow. Wait, didn’t they upgrade their offensive line? Oh you mean the two picks used on it are busts for the year with injuries. So really, they took a step back, right. Let me know when they feel like competing with the rest of the AFCN.

    Ravens Oline > steelers Oline

…and it’s really not even close.

  38. baned0n says: Sep 4, 2012 2:13 PM

Chicago already reunited Cutler-Marshall and Bates. Now I feel a Mckinnie-Tice reunion coming on.

  39. millerhour says: Sep 4, 2012 2:14 PM

  40. pskotte says: Sep 4, 2012 2:16 PM

  43. Move Them Chains says: Sep 4, 2012 2:45 PM

I love how everyone was hating when the Ravens signed him, saying how fat and lazy he is. Now that he’s cut people are clammering to get him on their team

It never fails a Pittsburgh dolt shows and post something that makes me laugh. Give it up your team lost to a QB who shouldn’t even be in this league. Burn!

    =================================

I do agree with you that McKinnie has never come close to reaching his massive potential, and he is a lazy POS.

Having said that, have you ever seen what the Raven’s conditioning test for their offensive line consists of? I’ll bet some 60% people here wouldn’t pass it, and most of the rest would be totally gassed from the effort. Those big body linemen are far more athletic than people give them credit for.

  46. cags777 says: Sep 4, 2012 3:53 PM

Sorry, but McKinnie is one of those guys who deserves to be fired from his job. He just doesn’t care. Face it, he’s only doing this just to pay off the debts that are owed. Plus he hasn’t been serious about being a professional athlete in the last five years. End this gravy train already and allow the Ravens to move forward.
