Phil Costa exits with back injury

A weak part of the Cowboys offense suffered a blow in the first quarter of their game against the Giants.

Center Phil Costa left the game with a back injury, forcing recently acquired Ryan Cook into the game. Costa had back troubles in the preseason as well, which is part of the reason why Cook is on the team. The other part is that Costa has hardly nailed down the job with his play and the Cowboys would be happy to see someone else take the job.

Cook’s first impression hasn’t been great. He got pushed straight back into Tony Romo by Jason Pierre-Paul in the second quarter on a play that saw Romo get picked by Michael Boley when he rushed a pass because of the pressure. The Giants also picked up a sack up the middle in the first quarter when Rocky Bernard beat right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau.

That’s not on either center, but it is a reminder that the interior of the Cowboys’ offensive line was a worrisome spot all offseason. They haven’t done much to alleviate it in the first half of the season opener.
